So, so far we have:
  • Let's say a dozen (to be generous) separate reports of this happening out of the literally millions of phones sold at this point. May well be less based on the photo comparison above, but let's give it the benefit of the doubt.
  • No first-hand reports of this on MR.
  • Reddit mods deleting posts about this indicating reasonable suspicion that they are fake or otherwise break Reddit rules.
  • MR report that Apple are apparently replacing affected units with no questions asked.
Nothing to see here, move along.
Nope. Someone posted on MR about their Blue discoloring on the plateau.

Also, if Apple is exchanging, it’s beneficial to MR users to know that it’s an option. Some might not know and assume they’re stuck.

If someone is claiming their blue phone is discoloring, that is the 1st. I looked and couldn't find the thread or picture...It is literally the same phones getting posted on the internet. Do a Google search for "Orange iPhone 17 pro turning pink" and look at the images.

At the end of the day, is there a possibility this is happening, maybe, but more than likely it is an absolute non event that the internet is making out to be way larger than it is.

Lets be honest. If someone is a member of this forum, they are not the normal Apple customer and are well aware of their options with Apple if they have a phone with a defect.

In an way yes. However, my guess is that apple has this thin and silky feeling surface that may be particularly sensitive while the aluminum items i have feel more glossy and the color layer "feels" thick. So maybe it's not apple cutting corners or being cheap, it could be the silky feeling of the surface comes with a higher chance of scratching and discoloration.
Honestly they either know exactly what they are doing (cheaping out) or have no idea why they are doing (core Apple design team left). This is basic manufacturing. They claim they use the same manufacturing machines that are used for building nuclear weapons, aeroplanes and time machines, to build their products.

That is no excuse.

Yeah, I’ve seen those posts too! It might be a coating or oxidation issue, but it’s too early to tell if it’s widespread. Wouldn’t be surprising if this turns into another minor “color-gate” moment. 😅

Maybe sun exposure? A lot of astrophotography gear is red anodized and will turn pink when left in the sun. I always cover my mount since it's red.
UV exposure…. That paint must be sensitive to light.

Cases may help prevent it depending on the colour and materials on which you use.

Y’all also knew how clear iPhone cases turn yellow right?

I’ve never heard of anodized layers changing colors due to UV exposure. But I have seen anodized aluminum become dull and cloudy due to contamination in the substrate due to lack or proper preparation. Oils, films, grease, fingerprints, micro-contaminates, etc. This color change seems too random or too perfect to be caused by UV exposure.

If real, id lean to this being a batch problem as opposed to a process issue. Could be some poor quality materials or not quite-apple-perfect alloy mixes of the aluminum or the dye used for the particular phones.

I haven’t seen more widespread reports or pictures of it in the second week. If Apple replaces your phone, good for you, but it doesn’t explain what happened.

 usually also should have added an ingredient in there that prevents such discolouration from easily happening. Much like the jet black finish.

Do people with full coverage cases on their 17 pros get that same issue?
