Just wondering if I'm the only one playing a game against myself called "Keep the pad fresh"

I'm with you, playing the game rather successfully thanks to Apples good product design. Both my iPads 1 & 2 are scratch free, dent free, and working well :)

No screen protectors either. I hate those bloody things.

I have both the iPad 1 and 2. The iPad 1 is still beautiful back and front, but my iPad 2 has one nasty scratch right in the middle of the screen. Contemplating having it replaced. Anyone here have this done and at what cost?

I don't understand how can you scratch the screen ? And you have a smart cover and you are careful with it.
Did you rubbed it against metallic objects ?

I thought it is scratch resistant. I never keep mine in the case, I don't have a screen protector and it is scratch free. I'm not even careful. I'm only trying to avoid the screen being in contact with metallic objects. That's it.

Only use the smart cover, which I use mainly for the stand functionality, but I'm fairly careful with my iPad.

I have a couple scratches on the back and a couple of light scratches on the screen, but nothing I'm worried about. I'd much rather use the device how it's intended and then sell it once the next iPad is released, rather than wrap the device in ugly skins and cases.

my iPad 1 has a tiny dent on the back, but its small enough that unless you shine a light right on it, then its not noticeable.
its more a case of trying to forget its there for me.

Bought my 32GB WiFi in white on release day - every time I think there is a mark on it, I take a soft cloth to it and find it is gone - this is the great benefit to glass and aluminum - they are resistant to scratches - this ipad should look this good for years. One of the most gorgeous pieces of technology I have owned (I have a iP4 and a unibody MBP)

Full of scratches and dents here.

Shortly after iPad 1 purchase, dropped down stairs while in a case... dent near speaker port. I took the unscratched iPad with me to a beach wedding... no screen protector. The kids were using it and must have had a grain of sand under their fingers... now I have 4 or 5 big, deep scratches. On the plus side, they are not really noticeable in normal use.... just when watching dark scenes during a movie. Also, I now carry the ipad around without a case. Its nice not having to worry about keeping it perfect any longer. I've considered repair... but I'll just wait for the iPad 3 and get a screen protector for it.

No scratches since I've had a screen protector on it since day one, but there's a dent on the back from when I dropped it in the gym. Babying electronics is stupid. They are here to make our lives easier, not more complicated! My iPad gets used, hard.

Yeah, I don't believe you either.

Congratulations on that.

Unfortunately, I'm not making it up. I'm no Apple hater either. I love my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4. But with both I have learned to accept that I'm not going to get a perfect one. I'm kind of OCD about my gadgets and treat them with kid gloves, so I do expect too much of these things that come off of assembly lines in China. Therefore, I have learned to deal with the minor flaws.

Anyway, I'm not sure what you think I have to gain by posting that here. I'm not trying to defame Apple in any way--they took care of me in a polite way and did as many exchanges as they were willing to do to satisfy me. I'm actually happy now that I don't have any dead pixels, so that's a little victory for me.

I guess I'm just inclined to think that it's all in your head. I have 3 iPads in my household (about to add a 4th) and have never had one with dust under the screen. Saying that you've had three in a row seems like BS. It's either all in your head, or your the unluckiest guy on the planet.

Since i have used the zaggmate, my back as a few scratches but nothing huge and noticable. The same goes with the front of my screen, one or two little scratches on the front. There is a little dent around my rotation lock button which makes me sad.

Is it still scratchless? How about those new iPads? Is yours still scratch free or have you already mistreated it?

Yes, because I obsess over putting a case on it the first time I go to lay it down.

I still have mine just as the day it was purchased. I kept it in a bag between uses to be sure it was kept safe and then as soon as I had best buy points I purchased the incase magnetic back and a black leather smart cover.

I pride myself on a beautiful iPad.

Mine came with a small scratch on the black bezel--you can only see it under certain kinds of light, and only when you really look for it, so I usually just forget it's there.

I used to freak out a lot about stuff like this, but I have decided not to expect perfection anymore. It starts driving you nuts after awhile. I just keep my iPad in its case and Smart Cover and try to be as careful with it as possible. And with this newly adopted attitude (I was NOT this calm with my iPhone 4 or my iPad 2) I've found that I enjoy my iPad a lot more.

PS: I do not have the dust under the screen issues that I had with my iPad 2--I think that would bug me a lot more than a scratch, unless the scratch was over the middle of the screen and I could see it when it's on.

True Confessions... I bought my iPad to *use*.

Oh sure it's very good looking, but it's not a collectible, or display piece.

What came out of the box Apple shipped to me, was a working iPad. One designed to be used & enjoyed.

So I thought to myself, I'll use it :)

I discovered a couple scratches on my iPad 3 a week or so ago (one on the bezel and one on the screen) however there almost impossible to see; the screen has to be off, you have to tilt it a certain way, look really hard, and the lighting has to be just right. However, I have no idea how they got there, as I've kept my iPad 3 in a case since day one. Sometimes I think they were there when I first bought the iPad but were so inconspicuous that I didn't notice them until weeks later, after the return window closed of course. They don't bother me too much, you can only see them if you're really looking for them, and even then it's hit-and-miss.

I will be using an Otterbox for one reason only. Also, I use an Invisibleshield HD. I take it to work with me, and one drop, and this beautiful $800 device is shattered. I can't afford a replacement, so I'd rather have the piece of mind.

Plus, with it in perfect condition, 2 years down the road when I sell it, I'll get more for it.
