I'm a big fan of the original Revo. Absolutely loved it. I bought the iPhone 3g version at the Apple Store last week. I couldn't wait to get rid of the crappy inCase rubber thing I bought on launch day. I had made the same mistake at the launch of the original iPhone. It appeared inCase had remedied problems with the 1 gen. case, but that was not the case (no pun intended).
I have to say, I'm satisfied with the Revo 3g, but not entirely. The disappointments with the case for the price are significant and warrant a 2nd look at competitive products before you jump in. I'll try and be specific;
1. The screen guard is a throw away given how it's been implemented. I understand they had a design problem because of the curved back, but the solution is so poor, it's not worth a nickel of added value in retail price (but you're paying about $10 for it). This is a classic example of trying to evolve a successful design and make it work on something that just doesn't fit. There is no logical way to remove and attach the screen guard to the back of the phone. The little grippers they molded into the case are difficult to attach to and the shield obviously doesn't conform to the case back. Plus, when it's attached, it pulls the case edge on the front of the phone away from the body and it distorts the shape of the case in area that the case is the thinnest. Part of the benefit of the silicone cases it the tight fit they provide. Rubber cases do not provide a good seal and all kinds of stuff get in and scratches your phones. The Revo2 with the screen guard attached to the back could suffer this issue. It also appears that having the guard attached often will ultimately permanently distort the cover as well. Not cool.
2. My original Revo for the 1st gen iPhone fit absolutely perfectly. All of the lines were perfect and straight. All of the port areas were perfectly exposed and the port covers fit tightly. Revo2 is not in this class. I find myself snugging the cover down in front to keep the speaker hole lined up with the speaker grill. The top face edge and bottom face edge adjacent to the display are not straight. This is an annoyance. The case fits tightly and provides great drop protection, but it's not as cleanly designed and molded as gen. 1.
3. The headphone jack cover does not fit snuggly into the port hole. It sticks up partially. Won't be long and that will be history.
4. The biggest problem with this case is the thickness of the cover in the front panels top and bottom adjacent to the display. It must be 3/32" thick. It makes it less than ideal for using the phone in portrait mode when using the keyboard or controlling certain app functions. I don't know why they couldn't bevel those edges to the screen surface. It's a 90 degree edge and it's annoying because of height of the material.
5. Because the screen-guard is dysfunctional I don't keep it on, thus making the overall aesthetics of the case less than optimal. The relief area that the screen fits into on the back is unnecessary as well as the little grip things. I don't know why they didn't just design this case without the screen-guard and sell it for $30. If you have the screen-guard on the phone and in your pocket, you have to use both hands to get the guard off (and it's not that easy to flick off). The original Revo had an elegant design and the guard attacked quickly and positively to the rear. It doesn't work that way with Revo2. Mostly, it frustrates you and it gets dumped on the dashboard...left for dead.
My recommendations to iSkin;
Dump the screen-guard
Design the case without it
Keep it silicone because nothing fits and protects better
Lower the profile of the front material adjacent to the display
Make it slightly thinner overall if possible to reduce the weight
Make the headphone jack-cover fit properly or lose it too
Sell it for $29.99 in a few more colors..
I love the Revo concept, but it doesn't work that well as designed. I'll keep it because without the guard, it's fine (and I paid so damn much for it it doesn't make sense to replace it unless it rips). These things fit well and provide optimum protection from being dropped (which I do frequently)
