errr sorry .. "but can do a lot more". What does the iphone do that other phones cant? Touch screen perhaps but what else? Please don't say internet browsing because I've been doing that for years on other phones.

The iphone IS missing some basic features like local storage, like decent bluetooth capabilities (read crippled on purpose by Apple marketing), like cradle syncing, like cut and paste, like mms, like push mail works when the phone is sleeping, like I could go on and on. These are standard, basic features that lots of other phones have had for years and the only reason they are not in the iphone is either Apple doesn't care or Apple marketing jumped in and said no.

One thing I will give to Apple is that they do release OS updates and maybe, just maybe these features will come over time BUT we shouldn't have to wait. These are basic requirements in any smartphone.

Then again, maybe the iphone isn't really a smartphone (yet).

oh and please don't say I'm an apple basher - I have a 3G iphone and a Nokia E71. I love the iphone UI but I was expecting them to get the basics right and not give us a crippled product.

It's more important to get the UI right first and then go back and add in the features which is what Apple has always done. This while everyone else cares little about the UI and just trys to cram as many features as they can into a device which leads to bad usability of said feature and makes it pointless for most people who aren't tech geeks.

Well ...

- I don't need "local storage" on my phone (don't have a $10 thumb drive I take it. What non-media files are so important to have on you that you have to have them on your phone, but not a thumb drive?)

- I don't need "non crippled" bluetooth on my phone (What are you hoping to do? Wear dorky wireless headphones?)

- The iPhone DOES sync when it's in its cradle (Yours doesn't?)

- I don't need MMS (Just have to send people your "OMG LOOK AT THIS! LOL" pics do ya? But not over email I guess?)

- The iPhone DOES push email when it's sleeping (Yours doesn't?)

Hmm ... I dunno, maybe it's just you. Maybe the iPhone isn't the right phone for you.

OMG! LOL! No, really...your post made me laugh. I like cynical.

I agree.

It'll be nice when all the "Why doesn't the iPhone have a 100 hour battery, 5.0MP camera, front-facing cam, stereo speakers, gamepad, laser pointer, ice crusher, etc.?" chatter comes to an end.

I dont think the OP is complaining about high end stuff. I think he is talking about the lack of basic stuff and functions that other less advanced phones already have and that the iphone is lacking. One example, no video camera. How can the lack of this be even explained on such a high end device.

I'm still trying to figure out what "finally makes sense". You have complaints. Big deal. Were they written in Sanskrit before you finally figured them out?

What makes sense to me is that long rants about the iphone's shortcomings usually have cryptic awkward titles.

No Slingbox support?!!?? The nerve of Apple! Guess what? There's no support for my Scientific Atlanta cable box, my Haier AC, or my old Wurlitzer jukebox either. Greedy Apple, not supporting every device ever!

Just to further clarify my stance, let me explain where I'm comming from. Up until 2 years ago I was using a windows mobile device, than for 2 years I decided I wanted nothing to do with cell phones or their carriers. I had a VERY bad experience with Sprint which left me extremely sour and over time I got used to having my privacy back and not being "conntected" all the time - I have to say it felt great (it also feels great to have a phone back though). Then, with the announcement of the iphone and it's new 3G support I bit, and may have bit the bullet. I fell in love with it immediately but the more I use it the more I find myself sctratching my head wondering why it doesn't do the most simple of things. My pocket PC from 2 YEARS AGO was able to do more, but seemed like it was a jack of all trades and a master of none. The iPhone is the exact opposite, it lacks A LOT, but what it does it does well - the problem is it comes with a free real life Steve Jobs hand to put in your pocket (the problem is, it won't let go). If you're looking for the best phone with the best web browsing capabilities and music player the iphone's it! If you want what all the other smartphones have and can deal without the fancy platform and some lag, you're much better off elsewhere. And for everyone claiming that my requests aren't such easy fixes....The jailbreaker's seemed to have figured them out pretty quickly! It seems like Apple leaves all the added features we'd expet out of such a phone just out of our grasps and require us to jailbreak and void our warranty if we want to get them that bad. And believe me, as much as I'd love to just sit back and enjoy the few great features that I DO have while waiting for the future updates to fix all its problems, once I go past my 30 day return period it will no longer matter cause I'll have no option BUT to wait. Again, my gripes have nothing to do with the crashing browser, cracked little cases and few bugs here and there...I'm just asking for some easy fixes like being able to sync my 3rd party to-do and PIM apps via the cradle, and having the ability to try an app before I buy it. With the exception of being able to use my Slingbox I REALLY don't think I'm asking for too much! I mean common' you really can't argue with me here, I mean this isn't rocket science we're talking about.

Apple's clearly decided whose side it's on...iTunes! And then AT&T. At least we come in a close 3rd!

I will concede to video ... having video recording would be nice.

Luckily, that can come with with a software update! Here's to hoping.

Dont count on it. It should have been here already. Its been over a year already. Its not hard to add video.

using windows mobile, no cell phone, slingbox, etc

As someone said earlier, Apple is a company of finite resources. The size of the company apple, as opposed to the size of Microsoft, is fractional. They don't have infinite resources to add every feature right away. This is especially true with things like Slingbox support and the like.

As far as Windows Mobile, that is a much, much older and matured operating system. OF COURSE it's going to have more features! It doesn't take Einstein to figure that out.

Yes, jailbreakers have been able to add their own features. BUT, how much time did those jailbreakers spend on development of the apps you see. I would assume, for the most part, that they did not write the code in an afternoon. Jailbreakers are also targeting the much smaller niche markets, while not having to worry one single second about anything else related to the phone. This leaves them able to be fully focused on their own app.

Apple has been targeting the masses more. With the exception of MMS, video, and copy and paste (with c&p being the only one I give two s***s about), everything else is going along pretty well for the masses. It does what they advertised very well. It's up to others to write apps for your preferences. Complain to them!

I'm sorry Odor,
Oclor.

No device is perfect and flawless. Every device has its own set of advantages and shortcomings. Take the MacBook Air vs. other PC ~3 lb. subnotebooks.

The MacBook Air features a full-size screen and keyboard, and a low-speed processor. It's also really thin. But it lacks many ports and a removable battery.

PC subnotebooks feature a smaller screen and keyboard that may be cramped for some, and an even slower processor. It's thicker than the MBA but has a full selection of ports and a removable battery.

Both notebooks are aimed at the same general segment: those who want a laptop smaller and lighter than a regular laptop, but are for different specific segments. Those buying either notebook have decided that the tradeoffs with their selected device are outweighted by its benefits. Same with the iPhone. While it does have problems, its benefits are big enough for people to buy them over other phones.

I'm personally ecstatic that Apple prevented the iPhone from being loaded up ATT bloatware. You should see the crap ATT put on my Tilt -- it's a joke.

But it IS an ice crusher!

(at least once, anyway...)

:apple::apple:

Maybe you should read his post again. I don't think he's asking for perfection. He's asking for good customer service...something that is lost in American businesses.

WHY NOT A TRIAL PERIOD FOR APPS?

WHY NOT ALLOW US TO TETHER?

ETC.

So basically you are asking for the perfect product. Do you think it's possible? Of course you can just think up what you want and just because it's in your head you think it's possible, but ask yourself really, is it possible? You are asking thousands of people who work on the phone to not make a single mistake in their work. Why do you demand this from apple and not someone else? Has any manufacturer of any product ever made a perfect product? Do other phones offer everything that the iPhone offers and then some?

Here's a tip. You have an amazing phone. Instead of looking at what it's missing, look at what it's got that nothing else does and just be thankful. If it was possible to make a perfect product, then there would be a bunch of perfect everything around, but there aren't.

This reminds me of last year when everyone was bitching about how the iPhone doesn't have 3G. Now they are complaining that the battery life sucks, which was the reason the original iPhone didn't have 3G!!! All the time I was just thinking, if you want a ****ing phone that has 3G and 5 days of battery life, go make it yourself goddamnit! They act like a tiny ass battery that is capable for supporting some tiny ass 3G chip for days and days exists and that apple just refuses to use it.

I almost forgot...no ability to sync any 3rd party apps through your cradle/usb, I'm sorry but that's just ridiculous! Again, the most simple of things with such an easy fix, so why not?

You DON'T have to buy an iPhone 3G. Carry a Crackberry and a laptop instead. Wait...still have to pay for internet access and extra 5lb's of wt......

you have a choice.

Sorry Oclor, I was writing on a big screen - it looked like Odor. I completely understand what you're saying, and I'm not asking for perfect - there's no such thing. A lot of people gripe about the battery not being removable, and while it would be nice to have, I understand that it's a trade off so I won't gripe about it. The video recording, again, while it would be nice it's no big deal. My gripes can easily be solved and it doesn't take a computer programmer to realize that. There are NO reasonable explinations why the iphone lacks the features that I'm addressing, NONE! The only posts on this thread (with the few exceptions that I agree with) are; relax - EVENTUALLY that will be fixed, there's no such thing as perfect and if you don't like the phone return it (mind you, I've said 3 times that it's well loved). While you really can't debate any of the aforementioned, they're really just lazy excuses in this case made by people who are taking offense and have no answers.

Oclor.

I believe most of you are missing the point being made. I do not believe the topic starter was simply complaining about the iPhone, it seems to me he has a problem with the utter disrespect that ATT and Apple show for the intelligence of those us that buy their products. These corporations are definitely within their rights to make their product however they please. However when you exclude features from one product that is available on your other much older products and your customers ask why and you so arrogant that you believe you dont have to answer, it can and will turn individuals off and give the appearance that their is a belief within these organizations that they do not have to answer questions raised by consumers that are valid questions.

Furthermore it is completely legit to ask, why a product is starting from the bottom and then introducing new features for the product that are not new features at all but only new to this particular product. One conclusion that can be drawn is that it is greed driven, and while it may not be the case, it sure gives the appearance that it is.

THANK GOD!!! I felt like I was talking to a wall! Only you and I think 2 or 3 other posters are actually hearing what I'm saying, I'm starting to wonder what the average age group of this forum is. The really sad part though is that with all the shady business practices and companies today, honest, moral companies that don't run based solely off greed are quickly becomming the oucasts and soon there will be none! It's no longer a matter of IF they'll have to settle a class action suit, it's HOW MANY they'll have to settle and for how much. We're in for a world of hurt!

You got it 100 percent. I love the iphone, but ut just annoys me that standard functions are omitted from the device for no apparent reason. I cant wirelessly sync my contacts with my computer.....been doing that for years on older devices.....cant use bluetooth stereo headphones on this great ipod. Why...I dont know.

WHY NOT A CUP HOLDER FOR FERRARI?

WHY NOT ALLOW US TO PUT TRAILER HITCH ON?

Where will the madness end? I mean ... my OLD Honda Civic has this!!

man all you people do is bitch and bitch and bitch (people like the OP) how about **** and just wait and ull get everything you need, always bitching about something...OP go cry about the no one telling you why apple hasnt implemented some of the things you want on the phone...and you are saying everything is so easy to implement, wrong, it takes time and effort, was it real easy to add some contact search and the app store to the phone? not really, they did it and the OS is still buggy as hell because they pretty much rushed it to get it out by July 11th, imagine how awsome it would be if they decided to put in all the little (and not so little) things that all you bitches want on the phone, not, the OS would prolly be a hell of a lot more buggy, and omg god forbid if that happens, imagine all the bitching....

just shut up and enjoy what is the best phone in the market right now...

if it's such a duh no brainer, you'd think the phones wouldn't sell very well.

Or maybe...just maybe, it's really not that big a deal to most people.

Anybody remember what a complete piece of s**t the BB was when it first came out? Give Apple time it's only been a year now...

- I don't need "local storage" on my phone (don't have a $10 thumb drive I take it. What non-media files are so important to have on you that you have to have them on your phone, but not a thumb drive?)

Um almost every other smartphone has some basic text editor functionality. Can you not even have thought of the possibility of editing documents on a phone? Basic file structure needs to be there for this an other reasons.

- I don't need "non crippled" bluetooth on my phone (What are you hoping to do? Wear dorky wireless headphones?)

Yes actually. Bluetooth is known for its 'dorky wireless headphones'.
...
How about sending files to your phone? Images, music, ringtones, syncing peripherals like a bluetooth keyboard... Anything. Any other phone can do it. It's so freaking retarded that you can't with an iPhone. There is no excuse. The functionality is 100% software and apple putting in bluetooth and not utilizing it is stupid.

- I don't need MMS (Just have to send people your "OMG LOOK AT THIS! LOL" pics do ya? But not over email I guess?)

No. Why would you think like that. Not having MMS is the biggest joke in the history of smartphones. Apple should be incredibly embarrassed to have not included it. Do I think MMS is a great thing? No. But when someone sends you a message and you need to see it, or if I randomly wanted to send someone a picture who maybe doesn't have a smartphone, guess what. I can't. It literally is laughable. Crappy free phones that you get for signing up a new contract have this feature.

There is no excuse for this.

Apple is known for innovation. The next iPhone had better have some typical smartphoen features AT THE LEAST. How can they innovate now after delivering the great UI that is Mobile OS X. Giving us 3G and GPS was a start, but there is a laundry list of other standard smartphone features that need to be added or sales will rapidly fall.

Just a few that come to mind are:
-Video recording
This is mostly software, but should be implemented by Apple as they will most likely develop it to be the best it can be. Prove me wrong, developers...
-Video chat (camera on front)
Obviously this should have been added with the 3G, normal smartphones have this, and Apple being the innovators that they are should at least keep up with the normal specifications, if not surpassing them.
-Removable battery/longer life
Longer life is a given for future phones. I am not judging the life of the 3G, I do not have one. However, obviously battery life is always an issue. As for the physical placement of the battery. I think the fact that they are ignoring issues with removing/replacing/swapping, is definitely not innovating. In fact it's kind of the opposite. I know Apple could design a solution with minimal cosmetic 'faults' as they most likely see them. Even if there was a thin line where the battery hatch was cut out, would this really be all that bad? For the advantages, I think 99% of people would agree it should be changed.

I'm done.

I'm done.

Good. Not sure what exactly it is you're contributing.

You think Apple is going to read this over and think "Oh man! rainmanbk's totally right! Why didn't we included a longer lasting battery in the first place? We so stupid! Editing Word document .. of course! That'll be easy to implement from a no-cursor-UI perspective. Front facing camera ... I knew we should have put all that empty space in the iPhone to better use!"

Most people seem to be willing to sacrifice small stupid things to let the big awesome things work.
