I get AppleCare only on MacBooks because Ive found it really helps with resale. I end up selling the MacBook about 2 months before the AppleCare expires.
I can't see how anybody would be foolish enough to think that's a good deal. Buying a MacBook for a little more than the going price for a used one on Ebay without warranty with only 2 months warranty left especially if it's in good working condition easily stands a good chance the buyer will not use the warranty.

If you damage your new 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro and don't have AppleCare+, Apple will charge $699 to repair the broken device.

The fee update was added to Apple's iPad Service and Repair chart earlier today after iPad Pro orders went live. At $699, it is $50 more expensive to get a repair for the new fifth-generation iPad Pro than it was to get a repair for the prior fourth-generation model. The extra cost is likely due to the new mini-LED display that's exclusive to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The repair $699 fee only applies if you don't have AppleCare+. If you damage your iPad Pro and have an AppleCare+ plan, the AppleCare+ service fee is $49, with two accidental damage repairs available every 12 months.

You also won't need to pay a fee if there is a manufacturing issue, as problems that Apple's fault will be covered under the standard one-year warranty. If the warranty has expired, Apple will charge the $699 fee.

The $699 price applies to any damage to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, including a broken display, and with a device as expensive as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, AppleCare+ is a good idea. Apple charges $149 for two years of AppleCare+, or an ongoing subscription can be purchased for $7.99. AppleCare+ used to be available for a limited amount of time, but can now be extended indefinitely with the subscription options.

Out-of-warranty fees for the 11-inch iPad Pro have not changed, and it costs $499 to repair a broken 11-inch model if you don't have AppleCare+, or $49 with AppleCare+.

Apple's new M1 iPad Pro models went on sale this morning and the first new devices will be available to customers starting on May 21. The 12.9-inch model was in short supply and is now sold out until July.

I may be wrong, but these are the prices I remember seeing on that chart last weekend as I explored getting the display on my iPad Pro 11-inch (AppleCare+ lapsed two months ago) repaired after I dropped it and noticed a hairline crack most of the diagonal length of the screen.

OK, you just sort of negated your point that you need AppleCare by saying they were repaired for free out of AppleCare.
I used to own a 2014 iMac 27-inch; it developed a fatal graphics card issue ~ 1 year after purchase. Apple knew about the faulty component, and covered replacement under AppleCare.

Before I retired I was responsible for buying and maintaining ~ two dozen mission-critical Macs. I used to get AppleCare for all of them. Back in the early days of PowerBooks, I took a work PB 180c along on a quasi camping trip. If I'd read the user's manual more thoroughly, I would have realized that the LCD display was not meant for operation at 9200 ft. or below 40 F. When the screen failed hard, I called the problem in as soon as I got back to work, and confessed that it was my fault. Apple sent me an overnight box to put it in, and the delivery guy waited while I packed it up. I had it back on my desk, with a new display, two days later. (Oh, those were the days.) AppleCare, no service charge. To be fair, that was before Steve Jobs came back.

Very costly to repair without AppleCare. Might be better of buying a new one in that case
Given a choice between spending $699 for out of warranty repair OR $2400… to me, and this is probably just me, $699 is JUST enough less than $2400 for me to choose to pay the out of warranty repair OVER buying a new one.

But again, that’s just me… I’m weird with math that way.

This is a SERIOUS design flaw. Every consumer device needs to be repaitable without in effect replacing the device.

If Apple were to use a few more screws and less glue a tech would be able to open the iPad andswap parts. The over all effect would be a slightly larger iPad.

The problem with Apple's insurance is they will not sell you a 10 year policy so you have to trash the device if it breaks after the 3rd year.

Please tell that to the posters here that always whine about 21% taxes and Apple’s higher prices in countries that have these rights. Apple bakes those longer warranties into the price of their products. There’s no such thing as a free lunch.

see above.

For example: I just paid $2177 shipped including tax for a 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 1tb cellular model here in California which is one of the higher taxed states. In France with the 2 year euro mandated warranty, you’re paying an equivalent $2596 after vat. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather pay the AppleCare and still be ahead of the consumer in France who still has to pay extra for the applecare on top of the higher price they already have to pay or have the CHOICE to not even buy the AppleCare in the first place.
..... You know I just checked your BS

Apple.com ipad pro 12.9 1tb cellular + apple care 2148$ + california vat 2356$
Apple.fr same ipad + apple care + tax (is already inluded unlike the US) 2318euro or 2786$.

The Apple france price for the ipad includes 360EUR in taxes thus price before vat would be 1960euro or 2355$ so apple charges 200$ more in france for the product before tax.

You need to include in this that apple care in france is 160euro or 190$ so the real price difference is less...

Vat in california is 9% and 20% in france...while it costs more the money is used at least for something useful such as not having a student debt crisis with over trillion dollar of studentdebt...

How does this promote environmentalism? You break your iPad, which Apple charge you close to the price of a new iPad to fix, so you buy a new iPad instead. Criminal.

Not foolish at all… You’ll be buying the used MacBook at a very low price, without having to worry about running into any problems, because you will be able to extend AppleCare under your ownership for as long as you like. Get it?
You buy used from eBay without warranty, and if it breaks, you have to eat the cost of it.

I’m doing nothing. I had two MBPs with the nvidia manufacturing flaw. I had several macs with butterfly keyboards. I had two macs with peeling anti-glare coating.

I don’;t care if you treat your mac with kid gloves - these were well known manufacturing flaws that resulted in Apple having to institute extended repair programs where they do the repairs, out of apple care, for free.

My OG 2012 Retina had both the anti-glare and nVidia card issue, but I thought the former was my screen being dirty, and the latter manifested about after the program had ended…

I replaced it with a 2018, and we all know how that goes…

They can only promote environmentalism to folks that don’t want to trash the planet. For those that REALLY want to buy a new iPad, while they’re at the store, they can give Apple the old one.

For folks that are going to throw away their stuff in such a way that it ends in a landfill, there’s nothing Apple can do to force them to bring it into a store to be recycled for free.

At that price point, I would just buy another iPad if I didn't have AC+.
That's their plan.

In Australia we have consumer protection laws, so I've never considered Apple Care, or any extended warranties.

I believe since the Aust government pushed on Apple to respect those consumer laws they have improved what they offer as part of Apple Care, but - still wouldn't pay it.

If it breaks, and it's my fault it broke, I have home insurance with a reasonable excess.

If it breaks, and it's Apple's fault, and it's less than 2 years - I'm taking it back to Apple for a repair and citing a few laws at them if they refuse.

Yes, I did this with the original ipad pro 12.9 inch. I had it on my bed and i sat on it pretty hard and it was bent, replaced it with applecare+
Actually looking through my insurance papers I don’t think accidental damage like this is covered by household insurance. I would have to claim theft or damage by fire etc.

So at least in my case AppleCare is great value!

I stopped buying AppleCare a while back because my stuff just wasn't breaking out of warranty, and I wasn't accidentally damaging my stuff either. If I add up the amount of money I've saved by not buying AppleCare, it would probably pay for a couple of out of warranty repairs.

Basically, it's not really worth it unless you're careless with your stuff.
I agree. If you are clumsy, or don’t look after your stuff, Apple care is perfect :)

I am the same, never broken anything, just look after stuff.

Where I work however, all the iPads should be AppleCare (education).

Dual 2Ghz G5 DOA, 2008 Mac mini server HDD death at 2 yrs, 2014 27"iMac gets vertical row of pixels fail at 3yr mark, iPhone 6 loses Siri functionality in first 12mionths, M1 MBP logic board failure at 2 months thus phoox repaired not replace. Those are just the highlights of the litany of **** that Apple has sold me.

This is exactly how this forum gets misinformation about the UK Consumer Law. It's a lemon law, not a warranty repair contract. The USA has a lemon law as well. Often people here say the UK gets a 6 year warranty when that simply isn't the case. The customer's Apple product must show it's issue within the first 6 months from original ownership. If after the 6 months the customer must prove that it was an actual issue with the product out of the box. BTW it has to be the same original issue, not multiple issues within the 6 years. That's why you get a 6 year lemon law. If after the first 6 months that Apple repaired the product the same issue returned a year later then that's what's covered until a full resolution of the issue handled. So you don't get a 6 year warranty. The 6 years is to resolve the original issue discovered within the first 6 months.

Like I said, if the UK Consumer Law acted as 6 year warranty then there would be zero reason for Apple to offer Applecare.
I’m sorry but you have misunderstood how the laws work both in UK or EU.

within the first 6 months the manufacturer is required to prove the consumer is responsible for the defect. 6months to 2-6 years the consumer must prove the defect is caused by the manufacturer and that they aren’t responsible for it.
You can have the screen delaminate 4 times the second year, the GPU can fail the second year twice, the butterfly keyboard can fail the first 6 months or in the 4th year.
the screen can fail from a broken flex cable after 2 years and the CPU can fail two weeks later.
They will all be forced to be repaired or replaced for 0€ as long as the consumer can prove the first time the fault happens is a manufacturer defect.

when the failure happens have no impact if it’s covered under the warranty period.

how do you prove it? By showing it’s a common or reacuring problem. Forum posts of MacBook pros with delaminaton problems from failure in the application process . Post of how the screen backlight fails from a flex cable breaking for being too short, GPU being shown to delaminate from problems with the wider being used etc etc

Apple is essentially issuing you a new replacement iPad, so it makes sense that they would charge you the price of a new iPad.

Expensive repair bills on expensive products that scare consumers into purchasing additional expensive insurance policies. Hmmm, I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a scam but an aboveboard well marketed scam by a hugely successful company.

Thankfully my devices are covered by my bank, my home contents insurance and strangely with my car breakdown assistant policy lol. It may not be as convenient when getting a replacement but i’ll take my chances as I haven’t broken a device in all these years.

They aren’t doing you any favours though as they charge you for a replacement iPad and you have essentially bought two devices. They benefit because they keep and refurb your broken iPad at minimal cost to them and sell on for hundreds. You walk away with a £699 iPad that you’ve paid a total of £1398 for on a ‘buy 2 walk away with 1’ deal lol.
