Right, if anything Apple is one of the big tech companies that supports their devices the longest.

Just the technological improvements alone, miniaturization, screen technologies, radio-communication standards, etc. make it very hard for these companies not to produce a new device periodically. That does not mean you have to buy it every year but they definitely will make it, otherwise their competition will.

I think Android devices suffer from early obsolescence more than iDevices. Same applies to Macs, I know people still rocking 2012 and 2013 devices that work decently.
I agree about android suffer from esrly obsolescence, but everybody knows that… apple hide things.. never admit their mistakes.. and the worst is that they talk about green care.

So the company that supports old devices get hit with "planned obsolesce" lawsuit? How many 5 year old android devices are still receiving support???
Its completely different.. beginning with the prices. Appke don’t admit, they continue obsolete products and the environment is suffering. The others do obsolescence, that is wrong , but they don’t pretend to worry about the world. Countries should be more strict about its way of sealing products, and the life tine of equipment. France is an exempke and did not accept obsolescence, they have to repair, or replace.

The iphone 5s on ios 12 is still being supported for 8 years. What more could be asked for?
They should do it with all products, without restrictions. My M B P had a logic board with defec, they changed once, now they are not worrying, its obsolete. Lets see what justice. Will decide.

There's no reason to lock bootloader access. It's not locked on Macs. Batteries can be replaced by third party ones, there's no reason for Apple not even sell replacements.
That is a very good way to look at it. If a policy os OK on a Mac, why not on a phone. For example Apple talks about all the disasterous problems that that might happen if third party app stores were allowed for IOS. But anyone can load and run any software on a Mac. We don't even need an "app store" we can go to Github and download "whatever" or write our own software and there is no widespread problem. It works.

Apple's real concern is loss if revenue if people were to bypass the app store Apple would lose their 30% cut.

Our best hope in fixing this is legislation or court decisions from Europe or China. Eventually one of these places will rule that locking down phones is no longer allowed.

Proof that unlocked iPhones could work is that unlocked Macs work.

Looks like US government is really afraid of the digital corporations like Apple gaining ground and gave signal to all their minions: It is OK to attack Apple.

The create new generation products and obsolete the “old” still in condition to use, just need some repair ) . It has been a Glogal problem. They don’t care about environment either about the consumers (we). I found some people that are so devote to Apple that can’t see what is going on. I was Apple fan too, but im not blind..all my devices are from Apple, but I started to figure out since the exclude the necessary acssessories from all I 0phones, even the 7, 8,9,10… it is not about the environment, is about money. The world needs cares, consciousl consumers, and responsible companies. Now im crazy to chage everything. Im so desapointed for the iPhone 11 , I bought without acessories… my MacBook pro 2011 has a fabric defect that Apple never told.. now its obsolete: trash. Im writing an article about my case study : Obsolescence a new way to consuming. Lets talk about it with everyone.. people should know behind the advertising.
You got 10 years of use from an Apple Laptop and are complaining? Apple exists to make a profit, they are a public corporation. However their environmental commitment is far above any company. They are carbon neutral now, and their whole supply chain will be by 2030. Seriously, grow up crybaby.

I see people on this forum arguing as if they were shareholders from Apple. Although it can sometimes be the case, I doubt most forum members who post pro-Apple arguments are shareholders. They think themselves as "objects" of capitalism and not subjects. I don't care if replacing a battery is good or not to Apple business, I just want what is better to me (and all of us) from a consumer point of view. The following quote should be still valid, although economy at the time was mostly keynesian/fordist:

President Kennedy: Consumer Bill of Rights, March 15, 1962

To the Congress of the United States:
Consumers, by definition, include us all. They are the largest economic group in the economy, affecting and affected by almost every public and private economic decision. Two-thirds of all spending in the economy is by consumers. But they are the only important group in the economy who are not effectively organized, whose views are often not heard.

Consumers are used to feasting on what drops from the table. Investors try to make sure nothing ends up on the floor. Does that define 'capitalism'?

I remember, as a kid, the local butcher shop would set out the 'suet' and people would come and take it. It was considered 'waste', part of the processing of meat that wasn't sellable. Ahh, but it usually disappeared. 'AH HAH!!! We can make money off it!' someone thought. They started charging for it. Problem: not many people bought it. It sat on the edge of the meat case, and rotted. They started throwing it out. Ironic, considering the use people had for it: They would boil it, mix in bird seed, and put the congealed mass out for birds. Isn't it enough that they are using your waste to feed birds (and squirrels)? And you want to CHARGE them for it now too? It has almost no other purpose. (Maybe soap, but in larger quantities). I think, since butchers are too expensive now, and some companies ship their dead animals to China to be butchered, suet is 'dealt with' and 'disposed of'.

Reality is far more bizarre than fiction sometimes...

Italian consumer association Altroconsumo today announced that it has launched a class action lawsuit [PDF] against Apple for planned obsolescence (via Reuters).

iPhone-slow-16x9.jpg

Altroconsumo is seeking damages of 60 million euros on behalf of Italian consumers who were "tricked" by the practice, with the lawsuit covering the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus. These claims date back to the 2017 release of iOS 10.2.1, which included a feature that throttled the performance of older iPhones with degrading batteries to prevent device shutdowns at peak usage points. Apple did not make it clear that avoiding shutdowns would require device performance to be scaled down, which led to a huge consumer outcry and blowback that's ongoing today.

Italy in 2018 fined Apple 10 million euros for "dishonest commercial practices" for implementing an update that "caused serious malfunctions and significantly reduced performance, thus accelerating phones' substitution."

Apple has maintained that the idea of planned obsolescence is absurd, with the iOS 10.2.1 update designed to make iPhones last longer by preventing interruptions in usage. Following the fiasco, Apple implemented battery health features in iOS and debuted a $29 battery replacement program, but it has still faced multiple legal issues related to planned obsolescence claims.

The prior Italian lawsuit and fine were levied by regulators, while the current lawsuit seeks damages for consumers. Altroconsumo is seeking 60 euros on average for all owners of affected iPhones.

Apple is facing similar lawsuits in Belgium and Spain, and a fourth class action lawsuit is set to launch in the near future. Italy is also currently investigating Apple for improper commercial practices in regard to cloud computing services and recently fined Apple 10 million euros for misleading water resistance claims.

Thanks God!! Someone telling the true about Apple planned commercial practices of discontinuing products.

I completely agree!! “We”all are consumers.. I do think collectively!! The planet environment is our responsibility, and we are the only people that can change companies comercial practices. They depends on our consuming. what kind of consumers are we? The ones that only thinks about their private problems; or can we see each other on the same side? We are stronger then Apple, With we stay together. ✌🏼🌎

$5 might be insignificant for my pocket, but for a greedy evil company like Apple it is huge.
I don't call Apple Greedy and Evil because Greedy and Evil belongs to Facebook, If Apple was greedy and evil then why to support their devices for so long and waste so much money on their software engineer to maintain our iPhones, why give us the best quality products like the M1 Macbook's why even bothering to give decent support unlike Samsung's garbage support, so your point is a bit hypocritical

The problem with Apple was the lack of options, choice and transparency. The engine knock sensor is in car specifications. You can also open up your engine and remove or disable it. The iOS however is not only a locked system that prevents modification but its documentation is also not transparent.

Same argument with the horse meat found in beef packages a few years ago in the UK. The problem wasn't the fact that it was horse meat, which is actually much more expensive than beef. The problem was transparency and misleading consumers.
Apple isn't really the company that misleads but sways customers with marketing

I'd like to use my original iPhone SE forever. It should be up to me to upgrade, not to manufacturers.
I know, but Apple could not just waste so much money on software engineers forever, they could easily well-spent that money on other parts of the company like research and development of innovative products like AR glasses, try jailbreaking if your OS is not supported, shouldn't really hurt if your backed up your iPhone through iCloud
