Or it means that the majority of Samsung products sold are cheap lower end android phones that are used as feature phones. (And yes, that is the case)

Some higher end Samsung phones cost more than the iPhone. But let's not let those pesky facts get in the way.

But does samsung rely on those higher cost phones or on the higher quantity of lower cost phones?

Well they shipped over 210 million smartphones in 2012 and we're told when their flagships reach milestones, so you do the math.

Obviously the majority of their shipments, around 75% or so, are not higher cost phones. So they rely on the higher quantity of lower cost phones.

A "FRAND" (as you call it) is by definite standard-essential. There is no "could be". It has to be basic to an official recognized standard. Moreover, these essential patents are identified at the time the standard is submitted for approval.

It is still a live game, all it takes is one court to say that this particular patent is essential of how we use touchscreens today. Once that happens and it will happen due to touchscreen growth all of this will be different game. Or they will just invalidate the major portions of the patent like they did it to Pinch-to-zoom.

Now it's official, there's a geopolitical business war going on.

In times of crisis, when there is less and less competition and more and more merger (recently the two biggest advertising group merge, making it monopoly over every marketing, PR, propaganda campaign you'll see), big corporation are big assets and stakes in the power of a country.

However, if the US decide to play the corrupt card and defend Apple when it has obviously infracted several FRAND, while condemning Samsung for two standard-essential patents (touch screen and headset recognition?), then South Korea, China and other such countries will probably react against Apple.

Tim Cook: we will give the NSA full access to all our users data not limited to but including, Siri questions, webpages surfed, all text and emails sent if you Veto the ban Samsung wants on our products and do no veto the ban we want on Samsung products.

Obama: Done, thanks for helping me spy on millions of innocent Americans.

Best Buy still sells the galaxy tab 10.1, but the rest are probably not sold. Of course the ban is not what's important.

Right, it's the potential to ban other phones.

However, even if they manage to ban some more, these particular two patents are not long term bullets, since they're unnecessary to make a phone.

  • The scroll lock one, Samsung has already worked around.
  • The microphone detection one, is a matter of using different circuitry.

But does samsung rely on those higher cost phones or on the higher quantity of lower cost phones?

People keep using just "high and low".

From what I can figure, Samsung sells about 1/3 high end, 1/3 low end, and 1/3 MID range.

This falls in line with the general worldwide distribution of smartphone sales:

If they are winning how come Samsung is now making more profits than Apple? Both companies scored exactly one ITC ban on outdated models. That's what Samsung wants - so far all these lawsuits did not prevent them from releasing innovative products and making profits in the process. Apple on the other hand... are not doing as well with iPhone market share dropping to 13% (far behind Samsung)

..yeah its a shame the iPhone 5 remains the best selling smartphone right now still, beating out the S4/HTC One launch,...its a shame iPads are the best selling individual tablet on the market right now and the iPod touch, is well, no one even comes close to Apple there'

AND Apple has better customer satisfaction then Samsung

Yeh in fact, I think I may have read that Samsung already has a workaround for those.

That's not how FRAND works. A judge can't simply declare a patent as "essential." When a standards body creates a new technology standard, companies that own patents relevant to that standard agree to put those patents in a pool that belong to that standard. The patents that are in that pool are considered "standards essential."

You must be referring to the process of invalidating a patent. That's a completely different concept. If a patent is invalidated, that means anyone can use it without encumberance.

But there has to be adequate grounds for invalidation. For example, prior art can be grounds for invalidating a patent. But a judge can't declare a patent to be "essential."

And by "shady" you mean the fact that Samsung is defending its patents (FRAND or not) which they are entitled to do, right?

There is one and only one guilty party in whole this mess - it's Apple. They started it and they are losing it.

I think he is referring to the holding hostage of SEPs in exchange for Apple's non-SEPs plus a hefty sum. Apple had 2 choices: infringe or not make a cellphone with 3G data capabilities

great accomplishment, they banned 3 year old products, wow, samsung would have earned millions from those products, right:rolleyes:.

stupid companies, screwing consumers

If by innovative you mean gimmicks, then yeah. Also, nothing Samsung has ever released has sold more than an iphone.

Well said.

They were already doing that. Every time your data went to iCloud it got scooped up by the NSA with or without Apple participation.

Its more like...

Tim Cook: we'll keep the not very profitable MacPro assembly plant open on US soil if you veto this Samsung ban. Do it quickly and clearly and we may open another one... someday.

Obama: Done, thank you for keeping 3,600 Americans employed over the next decade and under a Democratic Party Presidency.

If Samsung wants a Presidential veto they'd better look at standing up something that generates more then 200 new jobs, and they'd better get it going under Obama's watch.

There is a reason why I prefer MR over AI, AI a couple of years ago was awfully biased and I think of the same of them today.

Although MR posts are somewhat starting to annoy me.

AppleInsider caters to the fanboi looking for blood on the ground. Many posters there do so because they can post extreme, crazy opinions, and folks agree with them!

AI bans anybody with a differing opinion, but not before they get excoriated and called a troll.

AI is mostly good for laughs. Or sociological research into cults and fetishes.

But not much else.

If Apple makes equal amount of money from less devices sold, I don't see this as good news. It means that Apple has far higher profit margins, thus Apple products are far more overpriced than Samsung products.

Naw.

Apple makes high margins due in large part to economies of scale and efficiency. The price of the final product does not depend on the cost to build it. And the value of the final product has nothing at all do with the cost to build it.

If Apple phones and tablets were overpriced, then their market share would be like that of the Mac.

I have to say that from the perspective of someone viewing this from across the pond, to claim America is allegedly the home of free enterprise etc. it is looking very protectionist these days.

Only the other day we read that when things go against Apple you then have the spectre of your President stepping in to help out and now the US ITC vote in favour of Apple and there's immediate talk of banning Samsung products.

It really doesn't do Apple any favours in the eyes of people in other countries. Smacks of America throwing its weight around again.

I have quite a bit of Apple kit but I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone simply by way of making my own personal protest. I have to say I'm delighted I did as I really like the Android ecosystem.

I'm sure this post won't be popular with many of you across the water, but it is how many people are now feeling about this issue. I think most folk would be happy if both sides called it quits and sent the lawyers packing.

That's not really an achievement. If, say, someone wants to buy a high end Samsung smart phone s/he would have a choice between Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy Note II. Sure, each one of those will sell less than iPhone but I do not think Samsung cares. Apple on the other hand has al its eggs in one basket. And if the next model is not that popular Apple is screwed. BTW, I am not sure we can say that iPhone 5 sells better than SGS4. For some reason Apple just stopped giving information about the distribution of sales between different models. People peculated that only 50% of iPhone sales now are iPhone 5 but it could be less.

That 600 million was decided in a California kangaroo court in Apple's backyard, so I wouldn't consider it entirely unbiased. And after the Presidential veto it is very clear that Samsung will not, ever, get a fair trial here.

These Chinese 50centers Samsung seems to have hired are becoming a pretty irritating presence on the net.

How about generating over 1,100 jobs...

https://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/1...for-a5-chip-production-now-fully-operational/

Reuters reports that Samsung, Apple's manufacturing partner for a number of components in its iOS devices, has completed work on a new factory in Austin, Texas that is handling production of the A5 system-on-a-chip found in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Samsung had announced the $3.6 billion project in June 2010, but has not publicly admitted that the facility is dedicated to producing components for Apple.
The A5 processor - the brain in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 - is now made in a sprawling 1.6 million square feet factory in Austin owned by Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics, according to people familiar with the operation.

One of the few major components to be sourced from within the United States, the A5 processor is built by Samsung in a newly constructed $3.6 billion non-memory chip production line that reached full production in early December.
The report's source indicates that nearly all of the factory's production, which encompasses non-memory chips such as the A5, is dedicated to Apple. The new factory is said to have resulted in 1,100 new employees being brought on by Samsung, which also employees 2,400 employees at a NAND flash memory factory in Austin.

Oh and yes, Samsung won't get a veto. Doubt it.

They might if they give Obama and the NSA full access to all the information samsung phones texts, emails, webpages surfed, and everything stored in the cloud the same way Apple has.

Ha ha well there's kind of a huge difference.

This guy. Samsung's work from home program must pay out pretty well.

Samsung hires mercenary bloggers to endorse their products while blogging smack about the competition. If their bloggers don't comply, read below how Samsung screws them royally. Sammy got caught red-handed with this scandal a year or so back.

Samsung to bloggers: Promote our products at IFA or walk home

The company reportedly flew bloggers 3,500 miles to IFA in Germany -- then told them to don uniforms, man a booth and promote Samsung products or lose their return-flight tickets.

It's been well established that Samsung is a bunch of shady thieves. What's funny is the amount of ppl in the android community that support them.

Funny thing is that if you said this about Apple, you'd be immediately banned for trolling. I wonder if the mediators do this to you in this case or they are OK with such hypocrisy.
