Seriously, this is annoying. Exact problem on my end.

You should not have to touch anything in network settings. Just make sure it is set to use DHCP.

For what it is worth the Tether app on my mac seems to crash too. It "seemed" to happen right after connection as it tried to load the tether.com web site (I hate that that happens by the way). But I always just start the app on the iPhone again and the relaunch it on my mb air and it is fine. Does not crash once up and running.

To be clear I start app fresh on iPhone first, then start the app on my mac.

That is a different discussion. But that is how it currently works. There is still a workaround though.

You cannot get the IPA off of the iPhone directly. Even if you were jailbroken and could access the filesystem the app would be in .app format not IPA.

Since you are not jailbroken and the only way you can run this app is if you purchased it I don't see it as a problem if you were to get ahold of the IPA from someone else who bought it. Once you have that just drag and drop it into the Apps section in the Library section of iTunes (in the side bar).

Michael

I appreciate all the input you provided. I think I just found a far simpler way.

I connected my iPhone to iTunes and when I right clicked on the iPhone under devices, I was given the option to transfer my purchases as well as backup the iPhone! I now have a backup of iTether safely stored on iTunes. :D

Looks like Apple did think of a way for those who set up the iPhone without a PC to transfer their apps!

Excellent! I was about to email it to you. lol

I read through a few pages of the thread, but I didn't see this answered. Has anyone using iTether received any of the notorious AT&T notices about being forced into a tethering plan (especially for unlimited data plan customers)? Perhaps it's too soon to hear about this, but I'm curious if they detect iTether just like other unsanctioned tethering options. Thanks!

To answer the question no one is really sure.
I will say that users of the software on Blackberry and Android have not been caught. Hell I do not think any Android user has been noticed for tethering.

iTether does not send up a huge flag that they are tethering like myWi does on the jailbroken iPhones.

I have not personally received a notification, yet. Ive used just over 1.3 gigs with the tether app so far, and thats probably all ill be using it for this month. I decided to take advantage of the faster uploads on ATT which bests my home connection. Im sure there are others who will be able to tell you better if they can detect it. Im sure they can, whether or not its as blatantly obvious as some JB solutions is another matter.

Haven't received any messages yet but I use less than 500MB per month since I'm always on Wi-Fi at home and during the day I'm at work.

I tested out a 720p music video on YouTube and I think it downloaded 30MB worth of data for only 1 minute of the song.

I get a 3MB connection so after the "fun" of tethering wears off, I can't see myself going over 1GB per month. Hopefully AT&T won't raise a stink about it.

I agree - I can't see myself using much data while tethered*....only the ( few ) times I'm not on a WiFi system AND need to be on the net on my laptop rather than my phone.

* I'm one of the luck ones who got it before it was pulled:D

Based on what I have seen, on various forums, the main criteria for being contacted are:

1.) Unlimited plan. I have not seen one person warned about tethering who was on a metered plan. Indeed I think that would be a slippery slope for AT&T as those plans are paying for a specific amount of data and will get an additional charge if it is exceeded.

2.) Data usage was extreme. I don't mean a few gigabytes I mean more than 10 or even 20 gigabytes in some cases. I have heard of people getting warnings just by using that much data on an iPhone itself, with no tethering.

3.) And of course tethering. I have seen people report getting warned when tethering when only using 5GB or so of data but they were on an unlimited plan and usually used MyWi for the tethering.

So I think if we are simply reasonable about it there is no issue. But try and replace your ISP by tethering? You will likely get AT&T's attention.

Michael

^^^^ Tend to agree.

I'm got the unlimited data plan on my iP4. I've tethered off and on with various methods on it and all my previous iPhones. Limited use, just to check work email and light browsing while not at a real computer while out of town. No text, no letter, nothing in 4 years.

Now that I have a 3G iPad, it's got a 2gb month to month renewable 'contract'....and the contract does also (just like the iPhone's contract) have verbiage about not tethering. But, since it's month to month and a limited data amount, it'll be the device I use from now on....so there's much less a possibility that my unlimited data plan on the iP4 (and future iP5???) will be at jeopardy. The iP4 and iPad are NOT on the same plan from AT&T (two separate bills).

Michael, thanks for at least trying to help, no one else has even attempted to give us few users with this problem a chance. Unfortunately for me, this is still not helping. Downloaded the file multiple times and still no luck. Emailed tether to no avail. Just getting p/o'd that no one else has a clue whats up with this situation or seems to care.

One more time guys, when opening the tether app on the mac, a handful of us are getting 'The application Tproxy unexpectedly quit"

and then we can go no further.

Can someone else at least attempt to help out with this?

thanks.

I actually looked up what TProxy does/is yesterday.....cause I was curious.

Short version is that it's a transparent proxy server (software) residing on your Mac. It's most likely failing (or unexpectedly quitting) on your Mac because of a software conflict and/or software version (i.e. your Mac OS), or maybe because of a port being blocked. Speculation on both parts, but it's all I got. Sorry.

One thing, and maybe a developer can help out with this, is that the Apple iOS SDK really (at least when I remotely thought of developing iPhone software a couple years ago), pushes the developer into having the latest (or at least pretty recent) software on their Mac that they write (develop) on.

So, you may have an earlier version of Mac software that the developer has, and therefore it's not going to work, because of whatever piece of software is missing/different. Again, pure speculation....I didn't see what software you had in previous posts.

Just trying to help! :)

I really have no technical knowledge other than I am running the most current iOS on my iPhone and the most current OS X Lion on my Mac.

If you are using Snow Leopard, maybe upgrade to Lion? $30 (along with the $15 for the app) is a small price to pay for having unlimited tethering. You already make your money back in 2 months since AT&T charges $20 per month.

FWIW....I just installed the Mac component on another Mac mini I have...it's a 1.83ghz Intel Core Duo (late 2006 I think) running OS X 10.6.7. While it took about 5 minutes to churn through the install (and the CPU utilization went to 100% while setting up the network adapter piece), it installed fine. Seems to be working OK also.

My other Mac mini that I tested/use is a 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (2010 model) running 10.7.2 (that I wish I hadn't installed LION on, but that's another story).....

So...it appears that the Mac component also is OK with 10.6.7.

FWIW.

THANK YOU GUYS! I appreciate the help massively. KENDO, you as well, thank you.

I am running Leopard, not even snow leopard so maybe that is part of the issue. Getting a new mbp with lion tomm so maybe it will work then. Just wanted to test it on my imac at home to see if it works before putting it on the new toy.

If nothing else thank you for at least attempting to help. Can't tell you how much it is appreciated. So for those of us with this problem, maybe we can chime in in this regard to troubleshoot our way out of this dilemma. From this news i am guessing and hoping its because i'm still running Leopard. Once i get on my laptop in a day or so i will chime back in to let you know if there is a difference. Hoping so.

Again, thank you guys.

iTether Crash - Solved

First, my crash was not the TProxy issue. It was clearly "iTether Quit Unexpectedly".

After playing with various startup items, Safari Plugins, and System Preference Panes etc I found the culprit. If I disable Printopia iTether works great. With Printopia on the iTether Mac app lasts about 15 seconds.

Not sure anyone else had the issue, but hope it helps if you do.

This makes some sense. Printopia is setting up a type of a 'printing proxy' server on your Mac for all your wireless devices to route print jobs to, and since the Tether.app is also setting up a proxy server situation (for routing network traffic)....there's probably some port (or driver) conflict.....speculation on my part....but I don't think two Proxy servers would co-exist unless they were 'aware' of each other....

I must say, I've always thought iTunes purchases were a one-way deal and that they just did not give refunds. Never had a situation where I've really thought I needed a refund until now, but would not have even asked if not for your reply.

Anyways, ask and ye shall receive! Within 24hrs of my request, I have $14.99 credited back. +1 for iTunes CS.

What comforted me in my decision was the knowledge that I've been able to get refunds on app purchases in the past when I've requested one (once or twice before) through the support/contact form through iTunes.

Hey and thanks for the reply to my pm requesting that email. In regards to your issues with the app, have you gone to the company's support site. I have seen pages of them helping people trouble different types of issues for all three versions of their software. I haven't used their support page but did get a reply on their twitter page the nigh they released the app and the guy sent me his email address and actually hooked me up with a free tether t shirt because I wound up giving him some help but that's off topic. Point being if you haven't contacted them I'd suggest it they seem to be very quick to help

When you get a refund on something like this what happens, do they remotely pull the app off of your phOne? Do they have some way of stopping you from using the app? Obviously they'd pull it from your purchases list but since the apps been pulled it really wouldn't matter wing there's no way to redownload it. So yes my question Essentially is if they refund your purchase can you continue to use the app?

Thank you thank you!! This got me started to solving my problem. I disabled Printopia but was still having the problem with the iTether app crashing. On a hunch, I disabled Printer Sharing in System Preferences/Sharing.

That did the trick! I wasn't using Printer Sharing anyway, and it's easy enough to disable Printopia if you need to tether.

Thanks again!

Quick question here...

I purchased the App from the Mac App store, I believe it gave me the itether.ipa (about 189kb, isnt that too small?) that I see on my Mac Pro. I didn't get the app on my phone before Apple took it off the app store.

Can I still get the app on my phone via itunes? Or should I ask for a refund?

You can sync it onto your phone.

Yea, and you paying for it!

No, I'm not!

From what I understand, it's a US thing not a world thing. That's the biggest hurdle of understanding about this whole deal. Lots of people don't realize the US carriers are specifically hosing their customers on the deal of tethering. It's quite expensive to turn tethering on due to forced extra costs and it's done on a monthly basis. Even if you paid $50 for a one time thing with iTether, it's a drop in a bucket compared to what you'd have to pay for similar functionality over the course of just 2 months.

Ah well I didn't know it's a US thing. Everywhere in Europe it's free. Like it should be.

how do I get a refund for this app? since it isn't in my purchases list anymore?
