AUSTRALIAN iTMS 22 JANUARY 05?????

I'll do something a bit risky, I'll put in a date; January 22nd.
Why? If you look on Apple.com.au's privacy policy (here) they have:

And when you click here the new policy contains information about the iTunes Music Store:

Please don't kill me if I'm wrong, but I feel confident about this.
Anyone want to put any bets on?

Nice spottin Wardofsky - that's the most promising news of all! :D :D :D

And that privacy statement goes live on 22 Jan 05 so I agree with you on the date

I would hardly call AppleTalk a credible source. All they seem to do is post other sites' rumors.

Ditto MacRumors. But that doesn't mean I'd have to be skeptical if MacRumors were the source of a rumor? I found AT ahead of the pack on a few stories in the last month.

That privacy statement also mentions the iTMS FIVE times so it's definetly not just an example. So 22 Jan here we come?!! :D

Also, the Australian iLife web page under the iTunes talks about the iTMS and Gift Certificates... (and even has a link to the new Essentials feature with a dodgy link!!! :D :D)

The Australian Conference is over. It was nothing more than a rehash of SJ keynote.

Oh Well.

Glad you guys all didn't waste your time going down there.

Looks like Aussie muiic industry is having the same problems as Ireland

Crap.

EDIT: Okay, I'll say more. :D What copyright issues can be holding this back? We already have several online music stores? I see iPods everywhere I go, but we have no iPod-compatible shops. So technically, we currently have no *legal* way to put music on the bloody things (no-one actually enforces that bogus "no ripping" law, thank mankind). I wonder what's holding it back? :(

Apple Australia can't even manage to have us included in so-called 'Worldwide" delivery of photo books in iPhoto 5 so what chance have we of an iTMS? Bitter, me? Don't get me started

Jiptastic news

What a F***ing JIP! I cannot believe that there was all of this hype and mainstream press reports about a "big" announcement etc. only to have nothing be revealed other than what we could see for ourselves on the apple website this morning??? Am I missing something here? I'm not being sarcastic, I would like to know what all the build up, secrecy and fuss was about?

It was speculated enough in the mainstream papers and so on that a lot of people were expecting something. Couldn't Apple Australia at least have said "no-it's not happening yet", or at least acknowledge what people were waiting to hear one way or the other. Once again... what a jip!

What chance Apple said "We're gunna tell you all this cool stuff (iTMS, Retail Stores) but if it gets out we'll sue the lot of ya's"?

I find it odd that they'd have a special meeting otherwise

Ok, here's my wild prediction. iTMS Australia will be announced tomorrow (12 Jan US) and probably Apple Stores Australia too.

Reasons for thinking this...
1) Evidence that iTMS Oz is coming on or soon after 22 Jan (new Apple privacy statement) and a few references to iTMS on Australian iLife page that weren't there previously

2) Presentation to Apple business partners this afternoon (Oz time). I expect they've been sworn to secrecy but how long can you keep a secret in the Apple world? Not too long. So Apple needs to reveal all pretty soon after. So telling business partners first was a courtesy

Logical sequence would be:
a) MacWorld SF Keynote announces new products
b) Private courtesy meeting with Oz partners to reveal Apple's plans for Oz.
c) Next day announcement of Apple's Australian plans - which will likely be iTMS and Apple Stores.

I may be wrong about the day, but it'll have to be soon or a few people will burst!! (and it will need to be before 22 Jan)

Fingers crossed

Edit: Seems they've removed those references on the iLife page. But I till reckon it's gunna happen.

Only 2% of the market

Only 2% of the world market of music sales? Two things you can do:

1) Work to make it 0% or 1%. This means making bootleg copies as a form of protest. Risky...

2) Get that number over 1%. This means buying a lot of music.

I don't know which one will get things moving. It is open to debate.

I suspect it may have more to do with Telstra + Microsoft gettint to ARIA first than anything else.

I've heard strong rumours that you're on the right track.

There is some intense opposition in certain Australian circles to Apple, which you'd think was almost approaching bigotry. Telstra behaves like a department of Microsoft: focussed on market domination at all costs.

Regarding ARIA, I wonder if Molly Meldrum has an iPod! He's in the pocket of the ARIA after all (anti parallel imports propaganda and all that).

On my reading of the article, Phil Tripp the 'music analyst' does not work for Apple - and hence is no authority on the status of iTMS here.

Something will probably happen soon, and the signs are starting to show it. Time will tell :)

I think iTMS is on the way

I was just browsing the Apple Australia website and i found this very interesting description of iTunes 4.7.1:

"world’s best digital music jukebox software...blah blah blah...and groundbreaking personal use rights, the iTunes Music Store is the best way for Mac and PC users to legally discover, purchase and download music online." :)

If this doesn't mean that iTMS is on the way, then i don't know what does.

Stand up to your government.

Huh?

Wouldn't 'don't base your expectations on unrealistic hype from the uninformed' be more appropriate? And people wonder why they're suing Thinksecret...

iTunes New Zealand!!

I hope that one day, that iTunes stores become less localized and more truly global. e.g. I'd like to purchase some tunes from the UK iTunes store that aren't available on the USA iTunes. When attempting to purchase from th UK store, I get "Your account is only valid for purchase in the US Music Store." Of course, this will likely involve new licensing models/contracts etc with the labels.

I'd especially welcome an iTunes New Zealand. For a small pop. of 4 million, New Zealand has a long tradition of enormous musical talent just waiting to be "discovered" by the rest of the world. The government there is very supportive of the music scene (and the arts in general).

This waiting for iTMS Oz is killing me ... however as people are pointing out there seem to be more and more indications that it is just around the corner ... patience, patience ... :(

Just to pour some oil of the water here.. (rather than fanning the flames)

People have pointed out the new privacy policy that comes into force on the 22nd of Jan.

Which if you're looking it to be some sort of signifier... then why not just assume it has more to do with iLife 05 - which just happens to have a shipping date of - yes - Jan 22nd.

I think we can safely assume that Apple intend to launch the iTMS OZ as soon as they can, and are simply covering their bases by setting up this privacy policy now... but as far as reading this as a launch date - seems unlikely given the correlation with the iLife05 launch date.
