Australian Consumers Should Boycott iPod's!

In all seriousness, I think consumers should boycott iPod's. Why? Half the reason iTMS was created was to encourage users to buy iPods.

In Australia (and NZ) we are, I believe, significantly helping Apple's bottom line with our iPod purchases.

Yet we have no iTMS to go with it.

Why should we be treated like second class citizens? Especially after the number of iPods sold in our countries. Hell our numbers may not be millions, but I still bet it represents a fair chunk of change to Apple.

I also believe that if Apple really wanted to, it could have had iTMS Australia up and running by now. But I suspect that negotiations with Australian record companies began long after that of the good ol' US and Europe.

So hold off on your iPod purchases and don't let Apple treat Australia (and NZ) as second class!

I don't know if you can entirely blame Apple. I believe the record companies want stricter DRM controls and probably a higher per-song pricing scheme. I think Apple is on our side. The wait can be painful, agreed, but we should have patience, and lobby our music industry and Apple to come to a swift settlement.

It looks certain that iTMS is coming here*, but I don't think we should boycott iPod because of the relationship it has with iTMS, you'd want people to use a native player. And AAC is a good format, and they have made a pretty good anti-piracy system (although inevitably people will (try) find ways around it).

I don't think it's a matter of being treated like second class citizens, but Apple is based in America and so the majority of operations go on in America. It's not that they don't care, they are trying to get the services down here but we'll have to endure.

But I am still a little but annoyed that we don't have the iPhoto print services in yet :p

*Edit: Despite the ZDnet article, I remain optimistic... perhaps a little foolishly optimistic :p

During the Stevenote, SJ said new iPhoto printing services were coming worldwide (with iPhoto 5)

does that include you guys? (in aus + nz)

Just to pour some oil of the water here.. (rather than fanning the flames)

People have pointed out the new privacy policy that comes into force on the 22nd of Jan.

Which if you're looking it to be some sort of signifier... then why not just assume it has more to do with iLife 05 - which just happens to have a shipping date of - yes - Jan 22nd.

I think we can safely assume that Apple intend to launch the iTMS OZ as soon as they can, and are simply covering their bases by setting up this privacy policy now... but as far as reading this as a launch date - seems unlikely given the correlation with the iLife05 launch date.

I'd say you're right on the money. Usually the simplest explanation is probably the correct one.

It's now Jan 23rd and there is no ITMS Australia or New Zealand. Must have been the iLife thing. Oh well.

I guess we have to just lump it and wait for that magical day to finally arrive - all the while hoping that the price is right.

More hints of itms australia

I was having a bit of a look around last night on the music store and there is a whole lot of austalian content starting to appear including at least one album which is titled with (Australian Version) appended to the end....

Is this a sign ???

Maybe...or they realised that ITMS Aussie wans't happening anytime soon, so they put the artists up OS...

There was a story a couple of weeks ago in The Age here in Australia that quoted the Australian music industry as saying "Apple hasn't come to the party" (when talking about online music stores).

Telstra came to the party, so it isn't as if the music industry doesn't want online music here. Personally, I don't think Apple Australia have done much if anything to start an online music store here. It really doesn't look like we are ever getting ITMS - we probably just have to accept that and start working out ways to get our music from overseas...

As of a couple of weeks ago, iTMS now accepts my NZ address. This might be a sign at an AU/NZ release is in the works :)

If and when it does come to Australia no doubt we'll get screwed on pricing the same as we do on Appple hardware and software already.

I was my understanding that there has been quite a lot of consultation between Apple and the Australian music industry. Can anyone clarify this?

I can't clarify it but my understanding is Apple are doing their best in negotiations, however Aus + NZ equiv RIAA are locked down harder than London during a Bush visit. This as you no doubt know applies to lots of other things e.g. ridiculous download limits.I suggest if you live there go to allofmp3.com and use paypal.

An apparent oversight in the updating of the Apple Japan website for the iPod shuffle shows:The release of the iTMS in Australia has been previously rumored to happen in January of this year.

I'd be happy if they'd just get around to organising photo print and book ordering in Australia.

Yeah, right!

Nope. Apparently we're not part of the world of Jobs.

True. It's technically illegal to put a single song off any CD or record you legally own onto an iPod.

Oooeerrrr, we're all criminals.

Thanks for the tip. I don't like these dodgy Russian download sites, but I'll use them if there's no legitimate alternative.
