...Though from what Mongo says, it sounds like you're skimping... another bottle for the 'spider please garcon. heheheh.

No wonder the bars of Chelsea have run dry of the bloody stuff... :)

If I hear of a massive explosion and raging fire in South London between now and Christmas, I'll now know what the cause is.

sounds like you are going too light on it.

Ah but there's a fine line between moist and soggy... having gone overboard in the past and ended up with people having trouble with it falling apart. 'Twas very nice in place of the Christmas pud with cream in a bowl though!

iGav, the garcon has already delivered a second bottle (I find it useful to have around for after-dinner coffees etc) but I'm going to try to resist breaking into it...

Sad to say, I'm already in a holiday mood. It started with designing the Christmas party invite for my company. Quickly progressed to Christmas shopping (got a great deal on a 20gig iPod)...thinking about the holiday movies. Or at least Planes, Trains & Automobiles and Miracle on 34th Street (the b/w version, thank you very much). I'm trying REALLY hard to avoid the holiday music till at least the middle of November....

''It's a Wonderful Life'' was on at the weekend. Probably one of my favourite films ever the wife found it hiding on a obscure satelite channel I'd never even heard of before. Funny thing was it looked like they were broadcasting a knackered old copy from reels of film my VHS copy has less noise and scratches!

On the booze/cake thread; as an alternative to Ameretto try Frangelico it's gorgeous over ice, in coffee, on ice-cream etc.

Mind ponder that for next year's - although the trouble with Christmas is tradition... which in our family demands Amaretto.

Either way, the cake is made and now cooling down (4 hours in the oven and 4 cooling so far and it's still hot!) and a couple of pics of the 2003 and 2004 finished cakes. No idea how to decorate this one yet...

In my village I just noticed this morning that they've put the christmas lights up. WTF are they thinking!?!?!?
Me and the missus were walking through town on Tuesday evening, only to be confronted by hoards of council workers attaching frames and poles to street lamps and buildings, ready to receive this year's festive lights. Good to see first hand where my Council Tax has gone...

Oh my gosh! The ones from the last two years look amazing!!! That Santa stuck... and those stars! Hmph. It's women like you that make it impossible for women like me; completely useless in the kitchen. :p

Slap! It'll look more Xmassy when I decorate it - like the ones above! ;)
The decorated ones look great! How long does it take to make such a cake at a minimum?

Thanks  But I have to confess that it's not really very hard once you've learned the trick of how to cover the cake with the smooth white icing. After that, it's just modelling with a somewhat sticky clay...

Excuse my profanity, but are you taking the piss?

Did someone say cake with Amaretto in it? :)

Those cakes look AMAZING!

I have never understood as to why the stores even bother with halloween, since its only a one day occasion. It's mainly for the children, and you see an excess of everything for this one night.

Christmas is another story. :)

I read somewhere that Halloween is #2, in terms of sales for stores, after the December holidays.

Well, so that gives them plenty of time to sit about and wait until after the first snow so they then can get the gritters out when it's far too late... especially with all the dire warnings of the worst winter to hit us in god knows how many years.

You see, there's an answer to everything.

Good point, well made. I'm sure the council's Head of Gritting is already preparing for his annual interview on the local news to explain himself...

OOOOOOOOHHH

Sending mental vibes to Applespider and family...

Hehe, you know how I like Amaretto!

However... there's one item on the Basilico (best pizza place in London) menu that REALLY doesn't appeal to me... especially as i'm a veggie  (see attached pic) - EEK A MOUSE!!!! :p

Well, the cake is completely sliced up... but here's how it ended up looking at Christmas - I wanted tiny snowflake cutters to create a blizzard but couldn't find any so it was stars to match the table instead.

And here's a picture of the parcels under the tree since I was trying to describe Santa-wrapped parcels in red velvet earlier to Blue Velvet and failing miserably!

Love the cake - it looks really simple and beautiful. :)
Agreed. You are so creative! And the gift wrapping, too.

So, what did your mother give you (from the snooping thread)? :D
