The note 9 is the better phone and better value for money. It just doesn’t run iOS and work with the Apple ecosystem. So I have the max.

‘Better’ is always subjective. Is the Note 9 a good device, I think it is. But one thing Samsung doesn’t have that Apple does and that I value more than even Apples ecosystem, is there security with iOS, that’s a crucial feature of why I retain my loyalty with Apple.

Oh yes that’s my opinion only. For me it’s not about a phone in isolation, it’s how all of my devices work together which is why the iPhone trumps any android phone. Even if an individual android phone has better hardware.

I was trying to avoid opinions in my original post. If there is agreement that the Note 9 is Samsung's flagship phone, and the XS Max is Apple's flagship phone, then they are within $100 of each other.
The S9 plus is also Samsung flagship phone. But if you want to compare it with the Note 9 I won't argue. Just doesn't make sense imo. I'm sure if Apple offered a phone with a stylus they would charge 100 extra for the stylus lol

It's really nice. Just got it a few days ago. I have a week and a half to return it if I change my mind and go with MAX. Honestly if MAX had a fast charger I might have gone with it. The S pen is kewl. Can take family photos by pressing S-pen button. The AKG tuned buds are not so good, but still ok. The OLED screen is breathtaking.

um, but the question was "And how are you liking it so far? Can you integrate with the Apple eco-system at all?"

nothing in your answer says anything about missing your apple apps, how you import contacts, people who used to iMessage you, have you got a Watch that no longer talks to your phone? all the day-to-day things we take for granted.

let's face it people want better value but jumping ship from the Apple ecosystem is a big effort if you rely on it. Apple know that. They assume it is too hard for most people. And they get away with it until the price pain hurts so much people will start afresh.

more likely people will hold onto phones longer. 2 years becomes 3. I did it with my 6s+. I will do it again with my XS Max. that's why Apple have ditched reporting sales figures. they know profit isnt about selling more units now. phones do NOT need replacing every year or two. there are no massive feature gains or speed increases to be had. even 5 or 6 year old phones can upgrade to the latest OS.

Android users (and I have owned a number of these as well) are never so loyal. Partly because Android OS upgrades are a disaster. To own a year old phone that no one wants to put new features on is criminal. Or they make you wait 6 months.

We are rolling out work software to both iPhone and Android users. The suppliers dont want to use Play Store so the install is a sideload. Easy to do but harder to train users and open to security/vendor issues.

Samsung’s foldable phone coming out next year will cost as much as $2000... That’s a $1000 increase just to have a folding screen. That’s a pretty expensive gimmick without any real performance gains over the s10/note10.. Flagship phones aren’t going to get cheaper anytime soon

I'm permiscious when it comes to Apple and Google. I have a 6s+ as a backup, Macbook Air, Ipad, Win Laptop, Win desktop. My Ios has been dormant since I put the 6 in storage. So it's not such a big deal to me. Usually I go back and fourth from android to ios.

None of my contacts use iMessage or FaceTime. I think android users are not loyal because they have choices. They don’t have to stick with one Oem. They can jump between different phones running the same OS. On iOS we don’t have any options.

I don’t go back and forth but I always keep a toe in android. I’ve had several Samsung phones over the last few years, the reason I don’t keep them is because I can’t run two phones at the same time. It’s one or the other. I use my phone so extensively that I can only use one phone. I don’t want to get stuck in the Apple ecosystem to the extent where I won’t consider another device because I feel locked in.

I have to disagree. I think it would be worth the premium.

Agreed. having used all of them IMO Apple has the most efficient OS and their apps are of better quality. However Android gives you more freedom. It's a tradeoff. With every release Android has gotten so much better over the years than the garbadge it once was.

I just recently ended up going with the Note 9. I was about to pull the plug and buy the XS Max unlocked outright, but last minute after extensive research I decided on the Note 9, because of a few important factors.

1. Intel chipset over Qualcomm, and reported LTE and Wifi issues
2. No fast charger. IMO not acceptable for a device that costs $1,100
3. Value. The Note 9 is 100 bucks cheaper, comes with fast charger and 128 gigs, instead of 64, plus the ability to add more.

Based on those alone I went with Note 9, even though I wanted iPhone due to it's better OS and ecosystem.
By that logic, why would you even get the overpriced Note 9?

Pocophone F1
- same SD845 as the Note 9
- 6GB RAM and 128GB storage
- camera quality that people actually like (watch MKBHD’s blind test, pocophone beat out Galaxy and even iPhone)
- all for just $350

Is the Note 9’s stylus worth $700 extra?

You can complain about Apple prices all you want, but complaining about how expensive they are and then chose the similarly overpriced Samsung is silly and reeks fanboyism to me. :D

I have a good answer for that. It's about support. Samsung is the best when it comes to OS updates and support Android wise, the cheap ones just don't have it. This is why I wold never buy a cheap chinese phone for half the price with same, or better specs. This is why I would choose the Note 9 over the impressive Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

1. I agree with the lack of Qualcomm modems disappoint with the 2018 iPhones.
2. Yep, it’s dumb paying huge $ without getting a fast charger.

Let’s flip the table though:

1. Samsung doesn’t fast charge at QC 4.0. They slow their speeds down to 2.0.
2. Be careful what you sign up for. Samsung has atrocious customer service and hardly supports its devices in a timely fashion. Plus they start having issues about a year in. The phone’s curved display makes it more pricier to get a screen protector that works well (tempered glass that is).
3. Although Apple isn’t a saint, they put 5 years worth of updates into their phones and provide a very optimized experience.

The screen is a lot better on the note 9
The build quality is better on the note 9
The S -pen
The speakers are superior on the note 9
Always on display
Water resistance
Dex
Compatible with gear VR and daydream
Iris scanner
Better range of accessories
Wireless charging
Mobile payments (google and Samsung Pay)
Support

Definitely worth the extra money imo. Also the note 9 is significantly cheaper than the Xs max where I live.

LOL. You must be joking right?
First you use spec for the dollar for your logic to pick Samsung over iPhone, which is illogical since plenty of other better/equal spec phones that are far cheaper than Samsung.
Now you use OS support to defend Samsung? Samsung is one of the worst offenders. Samsung phones usually got major Android updates close to or after Google announce/release the next version. Just look how late the Galaxies get Oreo.

By the way, Pocophone already has Android Pie beta for it. So I can say in terms of software support, Samsung is not any better.

Like I said, something reeks fanboyism. :D

All very valid points. To me all phones are planned obsolessence. It was very dissapointing when Samsung did away with the removeable battery in their entusiast Note lineup. After two years your battery is just gonna suck, so you have a few options, pay a few hundred bucks for battery replacement and get another few years of Apple support, where your phone gets slower and slower after every new OS release, or buy another one. In my experience keeping a phone from being damaged after two years is very hard in my experience. So, if you wanted the best value and support, the best course would be to buy last years offering. Such as the iPhone 8, or the S8/Note 8. But I like the newest and the best, otherwise I'd get the Note 8 for 400 bucks, or the iPhone 8 and be a happy camper for the new few years.

It still fast charges faster than the iPhone XS and has fast wireless charging.

My husband keeps his phones for 2 years and hasn’t had any issues that he didn’t cause himself (damages) with his Samsung phones.

I’ve not heard a lot of good things about Samsung’s customer service but my husband used them once for his S3 and we didn’t have any problems.

At least you’re guaranteed to get 2 years of software support and 3 years for security updates with a Samsung flagship, even if you wait a while for the updates. I wouldn’t put it past Xiaomi to update the pocophone to android Pie and then abandon it after that. They don’t have any incentive to upgrade the phone. I trust Samsung more than any of the Chinese OEMs because they’ve proven themselves over the years.
[doublepost=1544228474][/doublepost]
Then wouldn’t it mean that the Max is the best value for you? ;)
It’s the one that works best for me but not necessarily the best value for money:p

Yup. Chinese phones may look flasy and have all the tech in them for an amazing price, but good luck getting any long term support. There's a reason why they can get away with selling them for so cheap.

I listened to a podcast a few months ago and they said the Chinese customers largely don’t know or care what version of android their phone is running because they are so heavily skinned. So where is the incentive to keep the devices updated.

None. They just want to outdo Samsung and Apple. Their phones are impressive on paper, but I suspect they probably take shortcuts when it comes to quality control. Also, just think about all that awesome Chinese spyware that may lie dormant.

First of all, you nor I know the price of the folding Galaxy. Nor do we know what additional features it may or may not come with. So lets stick with the facts we know instead of assumptions.

LOL. Fanboyism at its max here.

iPhone XS Max 256GB: $1250 supported for 5 years: 68 cents per day
Galaxy Note 9 128GB: $1000 supported for 3 years of security updates: 91 cents per day
Pocophone F1 128GB: $350 supported for 2 years: 48 cents per day (Xiaomi still updates its 2016 flagships, Pocophone will surely be supported for at least 2 years).

So where's the value of your Note 9? It's the most expensive phone for its life.
You can complain Apple is expensive, but when you are championing Samsung, your logic fails and breaks. Samsung is the worst value of phone out there. Even iPhones provide better value for their life.

The anticipated cost reminds me of a quote made of the Mercedes E63 AMG estate/station wagon: “It’s like two cars, for the price of two cars.”
The new Samsung Galaxy folding screen phone: “It’s like a phone and a tablet, for the price of a phone and a tablet.”

Simply put I don't trust homegorwn Chinese phones because of the Communist government "CCP" and their direct involvement with Chinese companies, but lets not talk politics. Value IMO is precieved value. Ones mans junk is another mans treasure. I also didn't complain about the MAX being too expensive. I probably would have gotten it if they included a fast charger. That's insulting to me personally IMO. Apple and Samsung have been around forever. So it makes logical sense to stick with trusted companies for support and security reasons. You keep calling me a fanboy, but I fail to see how I am when I own and have owned several Apple products. I work hard for my money, so If I wanna splurge on a fancy phone that's my choice. To me, in the end the Note 9 was the better choice. Next few years it could be Apple again.
