I don't know if they officially mentioned iTunes, but they said with Snow Leopard all apps will be 64-bit going forward. And indeed all apps in Snow Leopard *are* 64-bit with just a couple exceptions, the most glaring being iTunes.

Clearly, they weren't ready with a new version of iTunes for the Snow Leopard release, but there's no way they would release a major new version that is 32-bit.

While Snow Leopard is designed for the Intel based Macs, I think iTunes has to appeal to a broader based audience for the time being. The current latest version requires 10.4.10 or above, G4 or above and it is probably going to stay the same. An OS isn't as important to some people as syncing their music and all related things. Of course we won't know until tomorrow anyways. I think that September 2010 is when we will see the first native 64-bit iTunes.

Sure, of course. It won't be 64-bit *only*. It will be available as a 32-bit/64-bit combined app, like all the other ones. I have no doubt it will likely be available on Tiger and Leopard too. (As I mentioned in another thread, the latest iTunes still ran on Panther until a year ago.)

My only point was that in order for them to even *have* a 64-bit version, it *has* to be in cocoa because there is no 64-bit carbon. I'm sure it will be a combined 32/64/ppc/intel binary.

Just bring the old Steve Jobs back and I could care less what they announce. You have to admit it all seems like great news when it comes from him, even when it's mediocre.

Probably the most boring Apple event in recent history.. Cameras in iPods.. yawn.

I suppose Bluray support in iTunes will make me a little more excited, but I don't see this happening.

Hopefully if iTunes 9 becomes 64 bit (which it must! esp under snow leopard)...the rest of the iLife programs will be 64bit?

hopefully we wont have to wait ilife '10

I'm usually completely underwhelmed by Apple announcement events - what actually happens is usually way less than the pre-announcement speculation.

However, since the speculation this time is itself so underwhelming, this might be the first time that I'm not over-anticipating, so maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised by something. :) I can't imagine we get anything other than a bump in iTouch capacity to 64 GB and a camera - neither of which I care about - and maybe some iTunes enhancements.

I'd be flabbergasted if I see a 128 GB Touch or a 250 GB widescreen Classic, but the chance of either are probably near zero.

Well, I'm sure iLife and iWork will go 64-bit, but probaby not until the next major release. I don't think they'll do a point update just to add 64-bit. Remember too that iLife and iWork aren't part of Snow Leopard, but iTunes is.

What tangible improvements do you expect to see from iTunes/iLife being 64-bit?

I don't expect to see any myself really. :) But I do think the switch to cocoa necessitated by adding 64-bit support *will* make a difference.

Beatles

The Beatles MUST be one of the announcements tomorrow with it being the release date of the complete remastered collection. I expect Apple to sell a package with all the Beatles materials, just like this one sale at Amazon (Notice the Quicktime video content? Seems like a clue to me). Perhaps one of the first 'Cocktail' collections!

The Beatles in Stereo
Including eight years of groundbreaking recordings, the Beatles Stereo Box Set contains the individual albums, as well as a two CD Past Masters collection of non-album tracks. Painstakingly remastered over four years by a team of dedicated studio engineers at the legendary Abbey Road studios, they utilised vintage studio equipment in conjunction with state of the art modern recording technology to bring the catalogue to the highest fidelity it has seen since its original release.
Each of the 13 original albums also include a Quicktime mini-documentary, which feature rare photos and footage, as well as previously unheard conversations from Abbey Road studio sessions, to deliver a further insight into the the Beatles' recording process. All of these documentaries are also featured on a DVD packaged in the box set to provide more versatile viewing. The albums have all been repackaged in limited edition eco-friendly packaging, and contain additional rare photos and illuminating background notes.

This collection also marks the first time the first four Beatles albums have been available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc, making this without doubt the most complete stereo Beatles box set ever made.

What, are you new here? Jesus himself could come down from the heavens and announce the most mind-blowing Apple product ever conceived, something that would do everything anyone ever wanted, but in addition would also heal the sick, feed the hungry and create world peace.

And still people around here would complain that it doesn't come in their favorite color.

No mention of the almost inevitable capacity increase? Or the speculated faster processors? Both are almost a given.

If the capacity increase (and hopefully CPU speed bump) turns out to be the case for the iPod Touch, it'll be my third iPod purchase (1st gen 4 GB Nano, 3rd gen 8 GB Nano being the first two).

32 GB is not a big enough increase over 8 to warrant a $500 purchase, but 64 GB certainly is. I've changed my listening habits since I've switched from listening at school to listening on the commute to work.

As for the Beatles in iTunes, the only real reason I want them there is so their songs show up on my Genius playlists! :D I'm probably buying the remastered box set this week if it's not too pricey.

iTunes needs to go on a DIET

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.

Of the rumours listed Blu-ray support in iTunes (and presumably in other apps) is really the only one I'm interested in.

I don't really get the hate for iTunes from some people, complaining it's complicated is a little like complaining the dictionary has too many of those annoying words in it. iTunes does so much, and has managed to organise it fairly well in my opinion. Removing anything would just annoy the section of users who use whatever bit was removed. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I honestly don't get the hate. Maybe in the spirit of Snow Leopard we'll see it streamlined, but I just hope they don't do a premature iMovie'08/Quicktime X-style gutting of major features.

Cameras in the iPods would be nice, but I'm not buying a new iPod anytime soon after getting an iPod Touch at Christmas.

I couldn't care less about the Beatles on iTunes, real fans will buy the spangly new CDs anyway, everyone else probably won't care that much that they've been remastered or whatever. I can't see the big deal unless they have a tonne of new (by which I mean old but previously unreleased) exclusive material.

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.

I just hope you can turn off the stuff you don't want or need. Maybe the new iTunes will be more modular so the core app is slim and fast and the other stuff are addons, or plugins or something. That would probably be a smart thing since it would make it easier to add new features (or deprecate old ones) in the future.

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.

So what is it that actually makes it 'bloated' in your view?

Features you don't use? Well what features do you use? Imagine those, and imagine Apple drops those particular features, would that make you happy? If all you want is basic music playlists and playback there are plenty of other options, so why the hate?

I don't use, or have any desire to use the 'genius' feature. Do I want Apple to get rid of it? No, I don't, because some other people might like to use it and it really has zero impact on my use of the app, save hiding one panel, once, when I upgraded to that version.

So again, Why is it 'bloated' and a 'turd'? I keep seeing these vague criticisms with nothing to actually back them up. iTunes has always run great on all my Macs, am I just lucky or something?

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.

it's not bloated, it's XML based which is nice for small files. but as xml files grow larger it takes longer and longer to parse them

In other words, a VERY boring event indeed...nothing relevant to be announced...or let's see:

- Slight improvements in the iPod line, mainly related to cameras and higher capacity - excitement scale from 0 to 10? 5.

- Support to Blu-ray WHO? A stillborn technology that has found little to no adoption in computers, not to mention the only-marginal advantages over traditional DVDs and slow uptake in global markets - 4.

- iTunes 9 with some new features and support for Apps? 4.

And...nothing else. No Apple TV update, no Tablet, no Beatles discography. I will just come back from work and check the news with no expectations at all.

I'm really hoping for a 64 bit optimized Itunes 9 that alone would make me happy, and i also hope that itunes will have a cloud ability, so we can stream music from our library anywhere around the world with just an internet connection, it could kill Spotify this way, so it's a good go for Apple.
