I think the implication is that were Google to stop paying Apple for being the default search engine, that would somehow pressure Apple to adopt RCS.

I do wonder how that would play out, though. Would Bing see a huge rise in usage from all of the iOS users who just leave the search engine on default? Would Microsoft even want to pay to be the default search engine?

If you turn on Wi-Fi Calling, you can send SMS messages over Wi-Fi.I don't know if there are many carriers that don't support it, but I've been using that for years.
Yep but it still sucks and falls down the SMS / MMS charging trap. Apple products are great but their behaviours are really sucky at times

This sounds like whining. Why doesn't Google just adopt iMessage instead?
If they could they would've. iMessage was gonna come to Android originally, but Apple decided to scrap that and use it as a gatekeeping measure to keep iPhone users locked in, and it worked in the US at least. The only way Apple's gonna adopt RCS is if the government makes them at this rate, just like with USB-C and sideloading and alternate payment methods and right to repair

Apple needs to finally get over themselves and adopt RCS.

Apple is currently stifling innovation to increase their users' switching cost. It works economically, but is also a really ****** move from a moral standpoint.

If they finally adopted RCS, my Messages app would probably see a lot more use.

Yeah, who needs end-to-end encryption in messages anyways. It's not like people share private things with each other there, right?

Tim, just do what I want even though I haven't thought it through at all. Thanks!

Text messages from Android users to an iPhone look exactly like every other iMessage; white text on black (or black on grey if you’re jaded enough to not use dark mode). It’s the OUTGOING messages from an iPhone that change color.

This would be probably the best thing added to iMessages in years. Green bubbles is a bad experience for people with Android, but also people with iPhones. It's just awful to manage a group chat with Android people in there. And no, I will not be obnoxious enough to block or ignore people with Android, as some hardcore apple fans suggested here in the past.

Everybody wins with RCS support, and I sure do hope that Apple will implement it soon.
This is why I don’t talk to filthy green bubble peasants and neither should you.

Genuinely sounds like they want to filter all messages through a central hub so they can pluck data out of it. No thanks.

I'm honestly picturing one of those primitive fishing traps to filter fish into a central gathering area for easy capturing. The fish is your data.

What does that have to do with anything?
Leverage against Apple. IMO, Apple would let them walk, painful in the beginning but Apple would then introduce their own search platform (they’ve been building for years) or adopt DuckDuckGo / Bing and never look back. Google needs iOS search $$$$$ much much more than it needs RCS compatibility.

I want to agree and I would agree if RCS wasn't the mess. It is fragmented with multiple implementations with optional encryption.

If Apple sitting out pressures Google and the carriers to fix RCS, then all the better.
