It's just another year, which will expire in 364.5 days... who cares.

I think the OP has OCD. :)

Twenty Ten

Two Thousand Ten

Two Zero One Zero

This year

The year after 2009.

2 raised to the 11th, minus 38

0000011111011010

57 in base 3

1032 in base 8

...all work for me. :)

A year is 365.25 days not 364.5 days.
Details! Ha ha!

While technically correct, I think that the poster was referring to 2010. In that, since it is not a leap year, it has 365 days and since half a day has passed, then there is 364.5 days until the next New Year.

I'm curious to see how 2010 is referred to in popular websites, news and whatnot. :)

I'm calling it twenty-ten, because Sealab 2020 set the standard back in the 70s.

How many people called 1985: nineteen hundred and eighty five?

We've had a decade to get used to the new millennium and we've gotten through the difficult/odd to say years (eg: twenty-oh-eight) - - from here on in it's going to be twenty ten, twenty seventeen, twenty twenty five, etc.

My decades, like my years, begin and end when I say they do.

I didn't know Chuck Norris posted here.:p

i'd say it any way i darn please 2010 is two thousand and ten in my eyes

say 2009

Twenty Ought Nine.:D If I'm gonna pronounce 30.06 as thirty ought six, I'm calling 2009, twenty ought nine.
Anyhow, I'm calling this year two thousand ten (notice no AND). BTW, I actually pronounce 2009 two thousand nine (again, no AND).

I bet the dudes arguing over when a decade begins and ends will have a field day in here. :D
There is no argument in that thread about when a decade begins. But, you knew I'd take the bait here. :D

My decades, like my years, begin and end when I say they do.
Precisely!

Did we call 1905 nineteen thousand five or nineteen o' five? It changes sometimes, it doesn't matter what we called the years decades ago.
Yeah, it changes, but sometimes it matters, such as when one person lived long enough to experience both. It matters to that person, and I'll respect that. Precedent has value. Just look at the legal system. (not too closely!)

isn't it 20X? and henceforth all years following will be 20X.1, 20X.2, 20Panther, 20Tiger, 20Leopard, 20SnowLeopard...
Good one! :D

Imagine if we keep saying "two thousand" as the prefix -- that means when we hit "2021", we're going to be putting wayyy too many syllables in there.

It should be "twenty twenty one", or in the case of this year: "twenty ten".
As I said in the other thread referred to above, I think that won't set in with most people until 2020. We'll see.

When pronouncing numbers you never say "and" unless you're adding. It's 'two thousand nine', not 'two thousand and nine'. Thanks for butchering the English language! :)

That is unless you write 2,000+10 when you're talking about years, then, of course, I stand corrected.
:D I like that! You are absolutely correct. This is not a matter of opinion, or subject to anyone's choice.

No, it's two thousand and ten.
Twenty Ten is a cultural construct.
Sort of like calling a insufferable geek a "tard".
:)

There are far too many ruining our language with stylistic abbreviations, acronyms, and other linguistic mechanisms to shorten our wonderful way of communication. Simply because some nut says that something is "easier, faster, and shorter" does not make it right! When the year two-thousand and nine passes to the year two-thousand and ten this evening we need to make an effort not to bow to the politically-correct metaphors, abbreviations, acronyms and give the time and date the right accord of pronunciation...

Kinda like how you keep "ruining our language with stylistic abbreviations, acronyms and other linguistic mechanisms to shorten our wonderful way of communication" by referring to our President as BHO?

What in the name of Mike is "ninety nice", a polite nine? :D

That reminds me of this classic of late 90s hip-hop music. :D A group called Naughty by Nature had an album called "Nineteen Naughty Nine." Presumably, for those wishing for Christmas presents from Santa Claus, the above is offered as an alternative?

Actually a year is either 365.2424 or 365.2425 days, if we want to be exact (average days in a vernal equinox year, against actual length of a vernal equinox year).

But that is being unduly pedantic. More fascinating details on wikipedia ;)

This year will be pronounced "twen." The current decade started on April 1, 2005 and will end after March 31, 2014.

Why? Because I've decided that's how it should be. These decisions are arbitrary anyway, and you'll never get everyone to agree, so my choices are just as good as any others. Happy twen!

That's the way my Asian grandparents would have pronounced it ;)

No, not all the options are totally arbitrary. The two that I can think of that aren't (and I believe they're the only two, but I'm hedging a little) are based on the numbers.

One; the ten years that have the same digit in the tens place. This is the most common way of thinking about decades, as the 70s 80s 90s, etc.

Second; the group of ten years that follow a sequence beginning with the year 1 A.D. This is the correct way when referring to a Decade by number, as we do with Centuries, such as the 200th or 201st Decade A.D. or the 20th or 21st Century A.D.

But anyway, Happy Twen to you as well!

Well, happy twen to you! :)

Personally, I like Heisei 22 (Japanese equivalent to 2010). Keeps it simple! :)
