So iOS 7 should be released in about 3 and a half hours, no sign of iTunes 11.1. I was going to roll my iPhone 4 back to iOS 6 because I'm running the GM from a third party website, would rather install iOS 7 fresh officially from Apple. It doesn't matter if I can't, but would really like 11.1 now.

So right now you've got a phone you can't sync with iTunes but you're waiting to roll-back because you don't want to be stuck with a phone that can't sync with iTunes.
I'm not getting it.
;)

Given that nothing other than something official from Apple can be installed on your device, you are running the official GM no matter where you got it.

It doesn't matter, I think it's just me being picky. Basically, I'm running the GM which I downloaded from a third party website. However, I'd quite like to replace it with the official version they push out to everyone today just to make sure I'm running an entirely Apple version (I have no idea if the website I downloaded it from changed anything or had a buggy version.) But I can't sync with iTunes so I can't roll it back ready for tonight's iOS 7 release (which will likely be the same build as the GM anyway so I don't think I'll bother rolling back now.) If the build number tonight is different, it'll come up as an update anyway so I'll be fine.

But you can roll it back now.
DFU mode.
If you wait until iOS7 is released and Apple stop's signing iOS 6 then you won't be able to roll-back period.

Again something that isn't officially from Apple won't install on your phone, so what you are running is "Apple official".

If you managed to get the ipsw file on there, it's 100% legit, and the version being released today will be exactly the same.

If for some crazy reason the version released today isn't the same, people here will immediately know, and then you can "worry" about it. But the chance of that being the case is infinitesimal, thus, there's no reason to undo what you've done just to upgrade to what they release today (which, at the risk of repeating myself infinitely, will be the same as what you've already put on there).

I hadn't thought of that, thank you. Just my pointless worrying. :)

The number of people who want to cause damage to others, in my opinion, is very small. Most of the people out there really do just want to legitimately share the ipsw with the world, so everyone can partake in the fun early. :)

Sigh. You don't need the new iTunes to update your phone. If you download the correct ipsw file for your device (I'm sure people will post links to them, direct from Apple's servers) you can use the current version of iTunes to update it to iOS 7. You just won't be able to do anything with iTunes and your phone AFTER the update is complete.
...including restore your backed up data. You'd be starting fresh if you used the current iTunes to upgrade to iOS 7. (I did this with the GM when it was released to developers, then I found an iTunes beta and successfully restored.)

Hopefully the responses you've received so far reassured you. The other thing you can do is use a file hashing tool like MD5 to verify that the .ipsw file you downloaded from a "third party" is the very same file as the one Apple will post today. This is what happened for iOS 6: the files were bit-for-bit identical.

Here's what I installed on my iPhone 5. I'll be looking for a match when I download the release version from Apple via http://ios.e-lite.org later today.

Code:
$ md5 iPhone5,1_7.0_11A465_Restore.ipsw
MD5 (iPhone5,1_7.0_11A465_Restore.ipsw) = 440f179da12daf1f20f8b41817b92094

Actually … s/he is not. It's on the Apple iTunes download page. I just downloaded it, myself.

Still a Liar
