what are the chances of iTunes and thus iOS getting native support for non MP4 video formats ?

Or is this already possible and I'm just ignorant on the matter (which is highly possible)

iOS is not, because non MP4/H.264 will not run on it's built in hardware acceleration, which improves quality and reduces the battery hit.

So, if I'm understanding how this is working correctly, it scans your library and movies that have iTunes Extras associated with them show up with a blue "iTunes Extras" in the upper right corner (or next to the title in List View). It gives you the option of deleting the original iTunes Extras (which appears as "iTunes Extras (Original Version)") to free up space on your computer. Does this mean that all iTunes Extras load from the cloud now and can't be stored locally? That *could* be an issue with bandwidth caps for some people. Also, if a movie with Extras is removed from the iTunes store and your previous purchases a la what Disney did with The Lion King, there's no local copy and no way to back up your purchased content.

Funny enough, if you delete iTunes Extras and then go to iTunes Store and see your previous purchases, it shows you the iTunes Extras that you've deleted as not being present on your computer and available to download. Assuming these are the "Original Versions" of Extras, that could lead people to download them again, soaking up even more bandwidth.

A lot of the larger movies I have don't appear to have "new" iTunes Extras available out of the gate:

The Dark Knight (although The Dark Knight Rises has extras)
Alice in Wonderland
Citizen Kane
All the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies (yes, I have children)
The First Hunger Games
The Jurassic Park films
The Lord of the Rings films
Avatar

Interesting move. I do like that you don't *appear* to need a second local file to view iTunes Extras now, but if new Extras are available, it shouldn't show the old ones in Purchased Items Not on your Mac in the iTunes Store, and I'd love it if there was a way to download the Extras locally.

Well, they didn't show iTunes on WWDC, and the new, red icon we saw when they showed Yosemite is not present in the developer's preview.. iTunes might be the only program which still has the old 3D-looking traffic light buttons in DP3.. So maybe a rewrite for the fall release of OS X?

Good thoughts - let's hope so!

And of course the bug where on an "All Repeat" where it goes from the last song to the first song and you hit back, instead of going to the last song again, it goes to the second to last song is still there!!!

I don't know how many times I've submitted a bug report! I even have a new mac and it is still on the new mac so it doesn't have anything to do with a bug in the old mac's OS!

This is fantastic. Installing now, but I'm wondering how the iTunes Extras will work? Will it automatically begin to download HD versions of the iTunes Extras content I have now? Will the Extras themselves be modified with new content (depending on the movie and studio)? Will I be notified of what's new in any way?

It's great to see enthusiasm, but this quote reminds me of:

"This is fantastic." = CART

"New iTunes Extras will be automatically added to your previously purchased HD movies as they become available - at no additional charge." I hope that doesn't mean I'm going to have 300GB of iTunes Extras downloads waiting in my queue when I get home that I can't get rid of?

I hope they finally made it so it's an option to NOT download the extras with a purchased movie, or have it sit in your DL queue forever, begging to be downloaded every time you connect to the store. I just want the movie, not the rest of that crap hogging my bandwidth and hard drive.

I've been enjoying not having to navigate menus and extras and previews. I just wanna watch the damn movie. /rant

See my reply above. It appears as though the Extras are now metadata tied to the movie itself, and not a separate file download. This would mean that it works exactly the way you want it to: it doesn't download a bunch of stuff you're not going to watch with the movie, but if you *do* want to access them, it loads it off the web.

OO! Thanks for reminding me. I have iTunes Extras on something I bought a long time ago and never checked out. :D

Same here. I actually liked them with the original ATV. It was a nice bridge between the DVD and iTunes experience. Been waiting a while for them to re-add this support. Hope they do it for TV seasons, too.

Finally, i love watching iTunes Extras. I think it feels more like a physical media purchase when you get extras with the download.

For those wondering how it works. I just checked it out on the ATV. I found out when you go to play a movie with iTunes extras it brings up a dvd/blu-ray type menu to where you can play the movie, view chapters, view any extra short movies or galleries etc. at least for Battle for the Planet of the Apes which is the movie I checked out so far.

Pretty cool. imo :) and It's about time!

Due for an overhaul is an understatement. I'm glad I rarely have to use it.

I keep (naively) hoping we'll see a totally new device, based on the ATV (or working in conjunction with it) that can run (or attach to) an Apple media server, with a new front end, so we can break free of this iTunes ("tunes" for videos and apps??) silliness.

How is it that iTunes Extras for the ATV is only getting addressed now? The one advantage to buying a movie from iTunes instead of Amazon Prime, and they back-burner this for years? Did it really take getting spanked by Roku sales to make this happen?

I've looked at my movie library - I don't see anything different other than it saying 'iTunes Extras (Original version)'. Where do you see the blue label, or get it to stream directly?

Cheers

If you have a movie that shows the iTunes extra logo hit play as if you were going to watch the movie. The extra menus will show up as if it would on a dvd or blu ray. ie: chapters, galleries etc. at least on the atv it does :)

On the computer in iTunes / Movies / List View - A column is there for which movies have iTunes Extras. Must be HD Movies I believe.

On the ATV. Click on the Movie and you will see it on the page if it supports it. Then click on the movie and you will see a MENU much like a DVD MENU.

Extras only for HD movies? How about SD movies?

----------

I want to be able to upgrade a movie from SD to HD without having to pay full price for each one separately.

I can't see the extra column in iTunes / Movies / List View. I only have about 8 HD movies with extras (e.g. Looper/Pulp fiction/Django Unchained) but none are showing. I'm wondering if it just not available for the ones I have (yet) or possibly my territory (UK - yet).

If you're looking at it in the standard view, it's in the upper right hand corner, just to the left of the box art. If you're looking at it in List View, it's right aligned in the Title column, just next to the rating and whether or not it's HD.

Seems like iTunes is due for an overhaul, from the ground up... Maybe it's just me, but it feels clunky as it has grown to do much more than music...

It does feel clunky, but it does a lot. I think the interface was way better a few versions ago (think Snow Leopard), and it's just gotten uglier and harder to use since then.

At this point, I use it mainly as a back end thing for media management (adding files, changing metadata, etc), and occasionally to manage media on my iPhone.

For actually browsing and playing my media I'm usually using the Remote app on my phone and streaming to home speakers via AirPlay, or picking video content through the Apple TV interface.

I REALLY hope they bring an option to do this! I hope they do even for a small upgrade price (a buck or two)
and it does appear to only be HD movies I did not seem to have any itunes extras on SD copies that I could see.

Will this work with Home Sharing? Shared movies that already have extras downloaded on Mac?
