Yep, burning on my XP machine is pretty much hosed as well. If you get the application freeze wait for about 3-4 minutes without doing anything else. It should come back. Unfortunately iTunes crashes while burning if you try to do anything else on an XP machine.
If you also have a Mac I'd do your burning there.
