Podcasting...neat.

Still not going to be a happy camper until FLAC becomes playable in iTunes...that's just me. It's the only thing that I don't LOVE about iTunes.

You do know you can use the FLAC quicktime component and resave them out as Apple Lossless (or whatever) in QT Pro don't you?

or use xACT to convert them?

Works for me. Not direct support I agree, but for the infrequent FLAC files, it's ok.

Hey everyone, I just created an account here since I come her lots, just never post. Anywho, why hasn't a stroy been created about the new ipod's yet?! I'm about to order one and the look pretty nice. A Color screen, long battery life i dunno what is not to like about em'. Anyone else like the new updates?

I'm not super mad or anything but here is what I complained about.

No 40Gb iPod with the same dimensions as the 20 (I don't even know if those drives are in production yet).
No new design (ie Fifth generation).

That's actually all I really care about right now.

The colour screen is nice.

Because the 'All new iPods' aren't so new and isn't news worthy ;-)

chicago - the font used on iPods (and classic macs) - replaced by Myriad Pro in the new color iPods

New firmware details:

- Adds a new Podcast main menu option
- Podcast menu contains a list of podcasts you are subscribed to
- Selecting a podcast displays the shows you have on your iPod
- The date of each podcast is shown to the right of the show title
- All podcasts are bookmarked, regardless of their encoding

Also, in iTunes 4.9, a disclosure triangle appears next to your iPod and allows you to see the podcasts and playlists that are on your iPod.

People aren't very excited for the updates because other/better products were expected and this is just a restructuring with a few minor price changes, nothing to get the panties bunched over (and o do I like to get my panties bunched  )

The products are still great, don't let the lack of enthusiasm fool you, a lot of people just expected something more.

I've just had a quick peek at the podcast section and it looks like apple has done it again, taken a seemingly confusing technology and made it simple as pie.

However I'm rather dissapointed that the new music tuesdays podcast doesn't seem to wanna load to my iPod...it's not a podcast that way guys

Works fine with iTMS Norway, and I could subscribe to Inside Mac Radio without being signed in, so I guess you don't need an iTMS account to download podcasts...

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed by this as well. I would be much more tempted to get a 40 GB. It seems trivial but at 3/4" thick, the 60 GB iPod is significantly thicker. It doesn't seem like much on paper, but when you hold it in your hand it has a different feel. I'm also holding off because I'd also have to buy a new dock and case and I'm not ready to drop $500 for a thicker iPod with very few new features (photos and color screen). I'm thinking the next revision will be a more feature-rich update and my current iPod will work just fine for now.

As for managing your iPod when you have about 2000 songs too many I would recommend syncing by playlist rather than song and then use one or more smart playlists to keep your song count limited. I have found this to be quite managable so far.

As for my 'tar - I got it last week just before I went out of town on vacation for a long weekend so I haven't been posting much. I lifted the 'tar from Microsoft's Photodraw's clipart. I really liked it and use it on my webpage and thought it would make a good 'tar here.

You need to run the new iPod Updater software first. I had the same issue at first. Updating the iPod firmware fixed it. i now have a Podcasts section under the Music menu.

I guess this dispells the rumor of that guy having the rights to iTunes and having the courts stop the release/production/etc/etc of all iTunes related works until after the lawsuit finished. Nice to know Apple has things worked out and we can continue to get better and more fully equipped released of iTunes :)

Contois has no patent claim to their interface design. It should be thrown out.

I've been thinking about the playlist option. I'm gonna toy around with it when I have some time where I'm not doing at least 2 things at once or not home at all (don't worry I'm doing fun things).

I totally agree with you about the size situation (aren't you agreeing with me? I can't remember).

The dock comment is also something I care about. As I have a 3G iPod and a dock, and I really like the dock, so I'd like to be able to use it with my new iPod, this means that it can't be much bigger than the current 20Gb iPod.
A 30Gb photo might fit too, not sure.

I like the 'tar, it suits your name.

Apple's Podcasting page mentions that there's a page to submit your own podcasts. It also mentions that Garageband can be used to create podcasts. Very interesting! Both of the links to more information on those items are broken.

Garageband would be very ideal for creating a podcast. I never thought about that.

It would be cool if you could make chapters in them too.

It seems on my windblows computer they don't want to load. I tired to download some more and i only get a ! next to it. Why? I updated both of the software. Any suggestions?

yay!

well it's about time they got the colour screen on more of their iPods... although I don't see why they couldn't colourise their iPod minis' screens too.

Great updates! I've never been this excited about an iTunes update before, and am looking forward to checking out podcasting.

As for the colorized iPods, that's great news too - it was only a matter of time. They're making my 3G iPod look even older now, but I'm still happy with it, so no need to buy a new one - I'll just wait for a video iPod before I upgrade.

DON'T UPGRADE AT WORK!!...

unless you have your power adapter and FW cable with you! You have to Flash the iPod after installing the iPod updater. My iPod is now useless until I get home tonight.

Downloading about 12 podcasts as we now speak. I love the fact that there is now a centralized area where the podcasts are kept. This makes it so much easier to sync and subscribe to all the varying podcasts. This is a monumentally huge upgrade for iTunes.

Video iPods coming??? - filling higher price points???

Bill G posted this at MacDailyNews and it seems to make a bit of sense when you look at the new pricing schemes. The "new" iPods top out at $399 for the 60GB. Maybe??? Falls right in line with the Archos AV400 80GB at $599 but with a larger widescreen display.

"Make way for the HDiPod (vPod)

Scaled version of OSX

Intel CPU

4½" 16:9 Display

60GB for $499
80GB for $599"
