They should have updated the Minis as well.. standardized every iPods with displays to a color one.

Btw, do check out www.apple.com/ipod/ They have a really neat looking selection panel thingy.

Btw... i realize Apple is a like a professional hitman. Leave no traces of "old" in this case. Every tiny detail that ever showed that the iPod was once non-colored and every single iTunes picture without the lil Podcasting icon was replaced. Not a single trace of "old" remains. :p

Bill G posted this at MacDailyNews and it seems to make a bit of sense when you look at the new pricing schemes. The "new" iPods top out at $399 for the 60GB. Maybe??? Falls right in line with the Archos AV400 80GB at $599 but with a larger widescreen display.

"Make way for the HDiPod (vPod)

Scaled version of OSX

Intel CPU

4½" 16:9 Display

60GB for $499
80GB for $599"

Probably not a scaled version of OSX, but I'd expect those prices and specs HD sizes for a video iPod.

As for scaling things... I'm starting to wonder if the Apple tablet PC patent is actually going to shrink in dimensions and become some sort of iPod.

I've had that in the past when I've used a USB cable to update or restore the firmware rather than an Firewire cable. I'm guessing they've got round it so it doesn't happen with the newer model mini's which don't come with a power adaptor and only the USB cable.

The only missed opportunity from my perspective is the lack of some peer-to-peer method of distribution of the podcasts. That would be awfully nice. As it is, if your podcast gets popular, you're going to have to contend with a hefty bandwidth fee, which leaves at least a vestige of the old-media power structure in place; those who have the bucks control the means of distribution. With a stripped-down BitTorrent your listeners could actually distribute your podcasts for you; truly listener-supported public radio.

If you have a Click Wheel iPod, your podcasts appear in their own menu, right alongside your music and audiobooks.
As some have mentioned in this thread - this quote would appear to confirm that 3rd Gen and older iPod do not support the Podcasts. Perhaps they do, but not the same level of support as the new iPods get.

And don’t worry about losing your place: If the podcast you download comes with bookmarks, you can zip around within it on any click wheel iPod, just as you would with an audiobook.
The few Podcasts I've played with so far seem to work with bookmarks. I started listening to two at home and when I picked up on them here at work on my iPod they picked up right at the same place - very nice.

Linky where I got these quotes (bottom of the page)

new color 20gig iPod

I just woke up and I saw that along with the new iTunes, they made the 20 gig iPod a color one, and they discontinued the 30 gig. They also have a deal now where for college students, if you buy a new mac, you can get up to 179 off of an iPod. It was $200 last year. Oh, U2 iPod is color too. Cool. Also an iPod updater. Its huge too, 23 mb.

I guess if you were expecting a huge update to the iPods (of which there was no indication even at rumor sites) it could be considered disappointing, but personally, I'm impressed.

Color screens with no change in price... actually, $50 lower on the 60GB model. Making them all iPod photos with nice color displays, both simplifies the line and gives great features. This is a huge upgrade to those who didn't want to spend close to $500 for photo capability.

Adding superfluous features to look more like the competitors that are failing miserably against you is not the right thing to do (and certainly not the Apple thing to do.)

What I'm more interested in is the upcoming Apple event. Sure, they'll mention the updates to iPod and iTunes, but it's not the big announcment. In fact Steve has been spilling the iTunes info on podcasting for awhile now. Diversionary tactics? Could this be a new product line announcment at the upcoming event? I hope so! :D

3G Firmware

Has anyone used a 3G with 4.9. What happens with podcasts, does the updater change anything in the menu structure?

Sorry for questions, am 300km from my ipod.....

a question...

Is Apple hosting the podcasts, or just pointing you in the right direction?

Also, you can listen to an entire podcast without downloading it just by double clicking (like you would for a 30 sec. preview)

I don't think iTunes 4.9, or more accurately, the new iPod Updater provides any additional support for Podcasting. See my last post a few back about a snipet from the Apple site that leads me to believe this.

Is there podcasting support for 2G 20GB iPods? The iPod software updater didn't upgrade my old iPod.

i really thought with all the fanboy heat and possible lost revenue with the architecture switch, apple would really step it up and represent with a huge iTunes/iPod refresh/new model announcement...

quite unspectacular.

When is this press event? Is it today, or next Thursday?

New firmware details:

- Adds a new Podcast main menu option
- Podcast menu contains a list of podcasts you are subscribed to
- Selecting a podcast displays the shows you have on your iPod
- The date of each podcast is shown to the right of the show title
- All podcasts are bookmarked, regardless of their encoding

Also, in iTunes 4.9, a disclosure triangle appears next to your iPod and allows you to see the podcasts and playlists that are on your iPod.

OK, I'm totally whining here, but it would be nice if the podcast features distinguished among multiple iPods, i.e., I wish podcasting could tell the difference between my iPod and my wife's iPod mini. If it can, I'm not seeing it.

Bogus Pricing on new iPods

When I buy an iPod, I'm looking at Dollars/GB well, Apple has done us the favor of giving us a 20GB ipod Photo, but for $14.95/GB.
The 30GB ipod was $11.63/GB
So you are now forced to either pay more per GB if you want the low end or else pony up for the top end.
The 60GB comes in at $6.65/GB, Quite the difference. It's more than 1/2 the price/GB. I would have liked to see 30GB and 60GB models priced for $299 and $300. The 20GB is a lost leader. Dumb move. I won't upgrade this time around.

I think we're gonna have to get used to this for a while.

The last really exciting announcement from Apple was the initial PowerMac G5 rollout. Dual processors, two independent 1 GHz front side busses, 64-bit processing, etc. The announcement was so refreshing it knocked us onto our feet in applause.

Since that time, however, there has been nothing that matches or tops it. 30-inch LCD, the new iMac, color iPods, PowerBook G4s, Mac minis, etc. are all nice but nowhere as much of a leap as the PowerMac G5 was back in 2003.

Alas, spectacular new product introductions like the PM G5 don't happen every year or even every two years. Still waiting for dual core and dual dual core PMs to resuscitate a flagging spirit.

Maybe Apple will blow our minds with the new iBook update... :p  ;)

I'd also like to comment on complaints about podcasting. They will iron themselves out as podcasters realize that iTunes is the place to be and they better make it work if they want to ride the wave. That's part of the power of Apple implementing something like this. This is another great, surprising, move by Apple and shows how Steve and the crew are continually adept at forward thinking.

Who wants video iPods, though? What's the point? Someone fill me in. I saw video on PSP and thought, "neat, what's it for?" And who is paying $25 a pop for lower quality tiny movies you can ONLY watch on the tiny screen. I guess some commuters or travelling business people could use it to keep up on crap television, but I don't think anything that is worth viewing should be watched on such a tiny screen.

Is that worth $600-$700? I just don't see it. Maybe there is some hidden demographic out there I'm not seeing.

Now, if you could hook it up to a tv and watch it at a high quality and you could download shows off of iTunes for cheap commercial free viewing... we'd be getting somewhere, but file sizes are a huge problem for something like this. Give me a set top box to accomplish this. :D

We interupt this podcasting for the following announcement...

Am I the only person alive that's sort of "podcast.. meh"? I just don't feel all that burning of a need to carry around Adam Curry or Al Franken's latest musings on my iPod. Maybe I just haven't found the right content.

Rather than an outlet for repurposing what is essentially talk radio, maybe Podcasting should develop its own -- and different -- class of content.

I've always thought it would be a great idea to fill in the gaps of television shows with mini web-episodes that feature a side story with minor characters; I would much rather listen to a podcast short of a conversation between two of the "Desperate Housewives" than recycled "SportsCenter."

I thought the introduction of the iMac G5 was really spectacular. The iMacs build never fail to impress me. Lets hope the new iMacs will blow us away.

Not like the current Apple trend of giving little speed bumps and minor updates & refreshes to the products like thinner iMacs, etc etc. Revamp the goddamn thing like how you did before!

I seriously think Apple has been lacking in the innovation department this year. Either that or their resting on their asses too much or they have something really up-yo-ass to be released soon.

if i had XM Radio, i really couldn't see myself using it at all... but sometimes in the car you dont want to listen to commercials, or the signal goes out. i listen to 1460 The Fan in Columbus, OH every day, and they have a podcast of their two biggest shows, and when i'm not in town or not driving around, the podcast is nice to have.

i am suprised at the popularity of podcasting, because most of the content is usually a day or so old, by which point, ESPN.com, CNN.com, etc. already gives you all that information at your fingertips.
