Yes. At the very least it will cause more people to give it a try, and if there is a show they really like they may buy a iPod just for that show.

yeah, but since there arent any iTunes-exclusive podcasts, people can download and listen to any podcast with their own programs and listen to them their own players. podcasting is nice, and the interface they put in 4.9 for it is awesome, but is a podcasting interface the real killer app that apple needs to attract new iPod users? i don't think so..

Isn't it a bit weird to have 4GB and 6GB Minis and 20GB and 60GB full-size iPods?

But I guess for the majority of people (>80-90%) 20GB is good enough, 60GB is for the geeks, the real music afficianados, and all those file-sharers who just can't get enough (there might be overlaps between these three groups).

And the 4GB and 6GB is simply governed by what's available on the market and by the desire to have two modells in order to have both a low entry pricepoint and "high-end" modell for those willing to spend a bit more.

In the run up to all of this I was under the impression that you would need an iPod to listen to these Podcasts! It seems I was foolish!

Is there any chance of some more UK-centric podcasts? Radio 1? 6 Music would be great!

Am I the only person alive that's sort of "podcast.. meh"? I just don't feel all that burning of a need to carry around Adam Curry or Al Franken's latest musings on my iPod. Maybe I just haven't found the right content.

Rather than an outlet for repurposing what is essentially talk radio, maybe Podcasting should develop its own -- and different -- class of content.

I've always thought it would be a great idea to fill in the gaps of television shows with mini web-episodes that feature a side story with minor characters; I would much rather listen to a podcast short of a conversation between two of the "Desperate Housewives" than recycled "SportsCenter."

I suggest you check out 'On The Media' from WNYC and NPR. It's a fantastic program.

That's up to the BBC. They seem to be in love with RealAudio :(

Have to go through another coutries iTMS (South Africa here), but everything works semi ok, some of the downloaded podcasts are only partial

Also slightly under whelmed with the "new" iPods.

annoyances/required enhancements

When you subscribe you are taken back to the subscription podcast list - so if you want to subscribe to multiple podcasts, you have to go back to the Podcast listings again. You can not subscribe to many at once - even though you can select many - when you click on subscribe button it only subscribes to the associated podcast. . Makes it a bit awkward.
Yup, that's a big annoyance. I didn't like the fact that it takes the user to the download window the moment the 'Subscribe' button is clicked - it doesn't provide an easily visible way to get back to the previous screen with the list of podcasts, which may have been the result of a search. Nevertheless, I found that double clicking on the purple podcasts icon brings a new window with the list of podcasts (or search results, as the case may be) - and then you have two windows, one with the downloads and the other with the list of podcasts.

Another annoyance is that there seems to be no way to select and download multiple episodes at once (I'm not referring to the preferences where you can tell it to download all episodes) - it allows the user to highlight multiple episodes, but the only way (I saw) was to click on the 'Get' button against each episode individually. Is there a better way to do this?

Hopefully, the next update (4.9.1?) will include some good enhancements to make podcasts better integrated and easier to use with iTunes.

As I said in a different thread, unless they implement something like Bit Torrent support for podcasts, many amateur podcasts will soon die because of huge bandwidth costs.

do you really think that the podcasting interface on iTunes will be enough to encourage people to want to listen to podcasts, want to obtain them through iTunes, and want to buy an iPod to listen to them...? i think Apple is banking on a lot, here, if its putting all of its eggs in this basket, at least for this iTunes/iPod refresh.

No, Apple wants people who go to use iTunes and the Music Store to browse for Podcasts to have an enjoyable experience. Then word will spread and people will start using iTunes instead of whatever other software. Eventually, when file sharing starts to die out after the recent supreme court decision, all these people will already have iTunes which they were using to organize free Podcasts. Soon, they will start buying musinc from the iTMS since they can't pirate it anymore and Apple will make a lot more money there and maybe even stop making iPods altogether.

price points and model consolidation

It's too bad the iPod minis didn't get the color screen. That's what I'd buy.
My 2¢ on ideal product line (with prices possible for pre-X-mas refresh):

$99–1 gig shuffle
$169–4 gig mini
$239–10 gig mini with color
$299–30 gig iPod with color
$400 and up–some enormous capacity video thing

BTW, I think iTunes could use video, but don't personally see any need for video playback on a little tiny iPod screen. Still, rich kids who want to show off on field trip bus rides would love them.

well thats rather dull. its all american stuff, no british comedies for me. ill stick with saturday morning Radio 2 thank you.

Apple should try and put some excitement back into iTunes. as good as it is it needs some big fresh update. they should have waited for iTunes 5 before adding podcast i reckon.

Wait... the new iPod says its pod cast ready, does this mean all our old iPods aren't??? or ius there new fireware for our iPods to listen to pod cast?

Edit: Nevermind! I just saw that you havve to download the update.

And what does this mean for the special event? are the seriously going to drag on about the new iTunes phone the entire time???

Or maybe Tablets??? Please be Tablets! PLEASE.

i completely understand how the implementation of podcasts has future implications and will pay dividends in months and years to come...

my point, however, was that with the architecture change and lack of relevant updates, Apple needed to do something for the NOW, to get people interested and on board, buying product NOW, while there is a lull... not in the future. sure, the future is very important, but i don't doubt Apple's future or long-term viability, i worry about consumer disinterest NOW, because if people get turned off now, they buy new and different things now, and wont have the want or need to buy anything for a long time.

Yap, the 'new' 20GB model is now .06" (0.63" vs. 0.57") or 1.5 mm thicker than the old 4G 20GB iPod, so in size we are back to the 3Gs roughly (don't know the exact figure). They are still 4Gs (plus colour screen and physically bigger battery) but not with a better power management as the 2G Minis were.
I wonder why the U2 iPod is thinner (0.57") than the regular 20G iPod (0.63"). Typo in the specs page?

WOW

I'm pretty impressed by the podcast functionality in the new iTunes.

I've subscribed to a couple of audio and video podcasts and it works charmingly smooth. The best part is that you can get individual episodes of podcasts without subscribing or you can even stream them!

The only glitch is some podcasters obviously don't have the bandwidth to go mainstream and got "iTMSdotted". :D There are some comments (I'm not sure how correct) that iTMS listed podcsts that cannot handle the load will be distributed through Akamai by Apple. Hope someone figures a way to fix this.

phone dialogs

Here are screenshots from the new phone dialog boxes. (When you open iTunes for Windows with Microsoft VisualStudio, you can preview all the dialog boxes.)

so the phone options are just like the shuffle, with conversion options and so forth... now to see which phones are supported, and when...

doesn't seem to work with my iPod shuffle... i can't sync podcasts!

Yeah what's up with that? Seems like a HUGE oversight. I mean the Shuffle is made for Podcasting.

I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out whether or not I was doing something wrong. I still can't believe I can't autofill my Shuffle from the Podcast library.

Hmm.. those dialog boxes make it seem like the phones will be 1gb or less... would of been nice for a 20gb version, even if it was about the size of an ipod.

The Apple download page for the iPod Updater shows the 3rd Gen iPod now at software version 2.3. I don't know what it was before so I can't say if it is new.

Personally, I had to update my 4th Gen iPod from 3.02 to 3.1 with today's updater.
The 3rd Generation iPod remains at 2.3, which is a shame. I can use podcasts, but they're lumped together with my music. Doesn't really help.
