That I understand, I had however hoped the new QT would convert 1080i HDV to 24 f.p.s. and 720p all in one step... It is easy enough to do manually.

Framerate changes are never easy in reality. 24->30 fps and back in particular always seems to be problematic when it comes to quality. You introduce worse artifacts (like judder, don't ask me why they call it that) than by scaling down a little further, which is simple.

One-button presets should pick the lesser of two evils when it can. IMO, the lesser evil is 540p. At least for me, a bad 30<->24 fps conversion looks a heck of a lot worse than downsampling the movie more than I would like... especially when talking about an interlaced source.

QT dolby sound

with almost 400 messages I didn't read them all but just thought I'd add that there was some controversy if apple TV would do 5.1 dolby sound and someone said they tried with one of the new 6 channel HD movie trailers and only got surround sound output.

with the new QT installed I just played the Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer HD movie trailer on my MBP via my optical connection and got dolby pro logic with all speakers active and even the subwoofer. So whatever the previous status was the new QT does play synthesis a dolby 5.1 signal from the 6 tracks and does send it via the optical connection.

The Apple TV is starting to look like its purchasable after all.

Well, Dolby Pro Logic isn't quite Dolby Digital and isn't true 5.1 sound. Wake me up when they are discrete channels.

my solution

ditto when one song appears on two albums, why do we need two copies of the file? it would be easier to give it two separate sets of song info.

I was annoyed by this also. I ended up changing my tags around itunes 5 to the artist which I bought the album, then anyone else became (feat Charles Mingus) in the song title.

yeah but that's just it - there is a center speaker channel (which with true Pro Logic isn't used - right? Logic is just left and right with munged surround back speakers?) and the powered subwoofer connected solely to the subwoofer out is bouncing all over the place. It seems there is at least a left center right front and subwoofer (sound through the r&l back but that doesn't really help differentiate from true logic)

Anyone who can actually analyze the output to see what discrete channels are there?

Do the Dolby Digital 5.1 (NOT Pro Logic) or DTS lights on your receiver come on? If they don't, it's not 5.1 sound coming out of the speakers.

Ah....

"Dolby Pro Logic
The original Dolby Surround decoders in consumer equipment only played back the surround channel. Dolby Pro Logic was introduced shortly after for playback of the center channel as well. Pro Logic II added left and right surround channels (5.1), and Pro Logic IIx added support for 6.1 and 7.1 channels.

Dolby Digital

A digital audio encoding system from Dolby used in movie and home theaters. First used in 1995, Dolby Digital employs Dolby's AC-3 (Audio Coding-3) coding and compression technology and is the standard for DVD-Video and HDTV.Dolby Digital provides five discrete channels of audio plus a subwoofer channel for low frequency effects (the "1" in the 5.1). The five channels are front left, right and center and surround left and right."

So there is Pro Logic 5.1 sound.... Its just not the AC-3 format.

You add once and only one image appears for entire album as in reality.

yeah, i realised that. but, if i were to do that, there's this feeling of "incompleteness" and "irregularity"...do you understand what i'm trying to say? hahaha. almost unfair to the other tracks which don't have the album art added to them.

another problem i encounter is with compilation albums. itunes recognise them as from the same album, but by different artists, naturally. so cover flow shows tens of individual separate album art. that's all good and ok, but they're chinese songs with unrecogniseable tags, so my cover flow is filled with empty artworks. screwed up the pretty flow, really. any tips?

There's lots of ways - here are the common ones..

1: Any album that itunes store has will just automatically get the artwork
2: Tracks that Itunes doesn't recognise and so don't get artwork ;

Assuming you've gone to albumart.org and copied the image into the clipboard....

Go back to itunes ;

i) select the album tracks ( ie select multiple tracks) - right click & get info -then paste 'image' into artwork box - all tracks are updated with the artwork
ii) single tracks - get info - past image into artwork box.

Simple as that.

Yes, Chef - I agree - the iphone 'widget style' flip over for album tracks would be better!..I see this 'style' eventually displacing frontrow which now suddenly seems very dull!

I think there's a yet to be addressed bug that prevents you from doing option i

"Hmmm..." pondered Dr. Benway while considering the patient's symptoms. "A classic case of OCD. I prescribe absolute and total eradication of your iTunes library followed by a cold bath."

;)

Cover Flow fullscreen is pointless.

I have a dual monitor setup on my XP box.

It only takes up one monitor and blanks the other one, no matter if its on the first or the second.

Plus then not being able to change the track without popping in and out of it is a pain as well.

I wish they'd improve on 7's stability too for Windows XP. Never had a problem with 6 on my computer, upgraded to 7, and it crashes out sometimes, or when I do Remote Desktop then switch back, I have to close and reopen it to play music again.

I know I'm going to get flamed for these critisisms, but oh well. And dont be knocking Windows XP. I have no problems with any of my other applications.

...from the Action Corp TV video about unseen iPhone features...
Has anyone found string references to ringtones in iTunes 7.1? or even any other iPhone refs?

Strange, I run my mac mini on a Dell 2007wfp at its native 1680 x 1050, I changed to a lower 16:10 resolution and the lines completley dissapeared. This may be because the non native resolution blurred the lines as to making them invisible or because theres some issues at running at 1680 x 1050

I'm guessing you run at a much lower resolution, Try that resolution.
This is also what I observed on my Power Mac G4 MDD 2003 1.25GHz, ATI Radeon Pro 9000 (64MB): diagonal artifacts in CoverFlow full screen mode at 1680x1050 which disappear when choosing a lower resolution.

For those of you who are yet interested in screenshots: I posted one in a German Mac forum at http://www.apfeltalk.de/forum/itunes-7-1-a-t72767-p674684.html#post674684
