Has anybody actually won an iPod yet? Everytime the counter reaches the next 100,00 mark I have bought over 50 songs and sent some Tell a Friend emails and I still do not know if I have won anything. Are yall as determined to win as much as I am?

I'd say if you are that determined, you might as well buy an ipod the old fashioned way :)

More than one?

Does anyone know if it is possible to win more than once? Like..can I win at the 96,300,000 mark and then again at like the 98,500,000?

It looks like the blue line on the second graph represents the per minute download rate. The variation is higher at the beginning of the day because it starts out at zero samples.

As far as daily stats go, I made a page for that as well: http://www.itunesdaily.com/countdown/dailydata.php

thanks.

edit: but it must be averaged to some window (last 24hs?) otherwise it would just be a smoothed version of the processsed data (in green) which are also a per minute value. I guess it must be so as it is in accordance with your numbers (nice and clear, btw, good job)

the (new) third graph has the raw data in green and a smoothed ave (again over last 24h?) of daily totals (red) and weekly (blu). Or at least this is how I read them.

Yah, I bought a few albums... made the mistake of not checking the rules before buying the first 5 songs, which were before the starting point of the contest.

Anyone else think this is like gambling? :)
Anyone else think Mr. Jobs will announce at the end of the game that it's been extended out for a while, since we're totally Pavlovian at this point?

Sure wouldn't kill Apple to offer a new IPod for every 100,000 songs, aka $100,000, give or take.

It's really not gambling in that you are getting something of value for your money. I think that Steve will follow through with the rules.

Actually Steve holds the world record for the lowest paid CEO. :D (Linked article)

Well I suppose that he is technically.....

OK, so he might only get a measly $1 a year, but with a luxury Gulfstream jet and 10*million lucrative share options to his name, he's unlikely to ever go begging.

Email?

Hey, just a couple of minutes ago I recieved this email from Apple. When I saw the topic "Itunes Contest" I thought I had one and started to jump for joy. Unfortunantly, this was not the case. Once I opened this email I realized that I had been accused of breaking the rules. I do not understand how I was breaking the rules, all I have been doing is sending as many "Tell a Friend" emails as I could as fast as I could. If this is the reason I got this email then that is an assumption made by Apple, and not my fault, and definantly not a reason to invalidate any of my entries made. Has anybody else gotten one of these emails? I have copy and pasted the email I recieved below!

Did you read section 5 of the rules?

5. Tell-a Friend Email Entries. The authorized account holder of the e-mail address used to enter will be deemed to be the entrant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the address. Potential winners may be required to show proof that they are the authorized account holder or the entrant. The use of any automated launching or entry software or any other mechanical or electronic means that permits the entrant to automatically enter repeatedly is prohibited. Mechanically generated entries will be discarded and may result in total and permanent disqualification from the Promotion.

I assume that they are accusing you of using "mechanical" means to generate as many emails as possible. They just don't understand that there are those of us who will sit and hit send repeatedly for hours, and watch the apple.com home page obsessively, and write statistical applications to calculate the per-minute rate of downloads, and post about the contest at all hours of the night on internet forums, and make jpeg auto-generators for our sigs in said forums where we talk about the above behavior, so we can maximize our chances of winning a 20GB iPod! :p

Then what should I do?

A suggestion:

Don't be such a tight-ass and pay for a few downloads!
Just because an action isn't technically in breach of the rules, doesn't mean it's in the true nature of the contest. The contest is aimed to reward those who help iTunes sell 100million songs, and hence taking advantage of a legal clause that allows you to enter without paying is not truely in the nature of the competition, and may make it unfair to those who have actually paid for their entry.

edit: I have no issue with people trying their luck with the "Tell a Friend" option, and even considered it myself. But abusing it to the extent that the system thinks you are an automated procedure, and then whinging that "It's not against the rules", is really not playing fair.

well...excuse me....im not the one being a tight-ass.
And if you would read my reply I put a couple of days ago then you would realize that I do buy many songs, many! So dont accuse me of being a cheapo who is trying to cheat the system!! I am just trying to win, dont get mad at me bc I am entering it fast and a very high quantaties....do I sense some jealousy?

Haha. Yeah, that was pure jealousy.
I just think that it's a bit rich to submit that many free entries (which was obviously a huge amount) and then complain that you're being warned of the competition rules. What you're doing is clearly not in the spirit of the competition, and Apple is making that clear.
You asked for advice on what you should do, and I'm giving you my advice - buy songs instead. That way you can enter as many times as you want and have zero issues with the rules of the competition

Off topic

Just a quick semi-off topic question. Has the weekly free song been updated? I checked earlier and it was still last weeks song. They normally update it by evening Australian time, but even the next morning it was last week's track.

maybe you should try entering them in lower quantaties, then

when you entered via tell a friend, did you do the same album over-and-over or did you vary your choices?

Semi-off topic answer: yes, finally. See this thread.
