iTunes Expected to Be Retired After Over 18 Years

If they wanna keep iTunes, great; if they want to make new apps, great - as long as it works and isn't bloated. That's it.

How is it bloated just because it's multifunctional? Should I carry around a can opener and a knife and an awl and tweezers and scissors and... or just a Swiss Army knife and be done with it?

I never understood why it's "bloated". A nice player and iOS drives manager. I loved being able to purchase apps in it and then transfer them to an iPhone.

Yep. I'm going to go to sleep Sunday night and dream that that's how the Music App will work, i.e. Apple finally gets it and restored a few functions or at least made them options... :)

Of course, as an app, it might not be bloated. Quite the contrary, combining shared features probably makes the resulting application more compact and efficient, but I find the UI for iTunes to be bloated and confusing.

I only use the music library features on any sort of regular basis so when I need iTunes for anything else, I'm completely lost and I run around in circles.

Still, it's not as if I have any illusions that just splitting things up will instantly solve the issues I have with the UI. Some of those UI choices aren't really a case of there being a right way and a wrong way to do it. I just hope that with just one primary function to worry about, they can clean things up so that the things you need are easier to get to.

I want to still be able to make local image backups of my iPhone. Don't stick me on iCloud. I'm not always in a place with a reliable wireless connection.
And the concern of having to pay for the priviledge of going beyond the less than generous free GB limit on storage not to mention bandwith bottleneck compared to local drive to USB.

I love iTunes on my Mac. If they replace it with something else, it better be insanely great.

All functionality of iTunes should have been built into Finder, it’s does not make any sense to have separate apps.

Finder needs to be overhauled, it’s long due.

Just like they killed the optical drives on iMacs when it was still useful to rip Music not everything is available on Apple Music or Spotify either way lets see if they are going to kill off literally the RIP CD option with iTunes.

What I also find funny that you supposedly can watch a Blu-Ray on a iMac but they never bothered to upgrade to a Blu-Ray optical drive such a epic logic from apple.

It least give us a option to buy a portable optical drive in Apple store and not that Super Drive you guys are selling that has terrible reviews.

From what I understand, the only thing really changing is it is no longer called Itunes and the other stuff is being separated, also from reading many of the comments it is obvious most people just read headlines and not actually articles

I've read a fair bit as well and I am *Hoping* this is the case, however, Apple's past of similar moves (Final Cut Pro X, iPhoto to Photos, iWork - to name a couple) removed features, and while usually a users's organisation of their content was relatively maintained, increased the difficulty of following preferred organisational strategies.

Everything about iTunes spiralled downward after iTunes 10.7. iTunes 10.7 was the best of the best. I hung on to an iOS 6 iPhone 5 up till early 2018 and syncing with iTunes 10 was just perfect and it also works great with iPod Classic.
The only reason Apple is axing iTunes now is because iTunes 11 and 12 have been an absolute fail and they have not found a way to provide the quality experience we had before it. If they released iTunes 10 again with updated support for all the newer iOS versions, I would be perfectly happy with that. No emojis, no gimmicks. I want the just works feel Apple used to have.

I would assume as far as us Windows users go, they will change the name from Itunes to Apple music + or something, I doubt they make different programs for podcasts, ETC on Windows , and I don't need to read the article or wait to know they are not abandoning Windows users like one person said, that is ridculous

Just horrid. As a musician and recording artist I've used iTunes to CATALOG my own music (literally THOUSANDS of songs since 2001-ish) not to mention every CD I ever bought and backups of music from bands I've been in going back 30 years. My iTunes database is truly ginormous.

It's obvious this is going to be "Spotify for Apple ecosystem" focusing on Apple Music streaming.

I have alternatives, not great ones but I do have alternatives:
-I'll keep using iTunes until I can't.
(even if it keeps putting the wrong cover art on music transferred to my iPhoneX)
-I have WinAmp Mac which appears to be a 64-bit app.
-I have Fidelia which is a pay-for app but that's just for playing back music on my computer.
-Maybe a new developer might emerge with something to compete for those who prefer the old way of doing things.

Terrible. I will never sign up for a perpetual Apple Music or Spotify sub. I don’t need it and I don’t want it. If this is the case I’ll stay on 10.14.6 for as long as I can especially if it will be replaced with garbage UIKit iOS style apps. 10.15 also gets rid of 32-bit support and the old Safari Adblock extensions and what are we gaining? Apple has been on a trend of killing useful stuff like Aperture only to replace it with garbage.

I use iTunes Match. I exported my entire library to an external drive and simply stream on demand from all my Apple devices. Wasting nearly 100 GB of the NVMe is stupid. iTunes also handles restoring firmwares for iOS devices and the Apple TV which is necessary when all else fails. Where is that going to go now?

The people who don’t like iTunes simply don’t know how to use a computer. These are people who never knew how or never bothered to edit metadata. People with a bunch of duplicate files and a complete disorganized mess and that’s fine. Make a simple UI for them but don’t take away features from people who need and use them.

I use a Mac because I like macOS. iOS is great on phones and tablets and that’s where it should stay. Otherwise I’ll go back to Windows which I used my entire life before switching to macOS this decade.

Ok for those that refuse to actually read, Itunes is being renamed to music and all the functions of itunes will be part of that. Podcasts and Tv, Movies are being seperated from it

I will be seriously unhappy if iTunes for Windows is gone because that's pretty much where I get my music from. And I buy my albums still.

Apple will have to keep a store of some sort around for TV and movies, unless they’re planning on doing a streaming service in the TV app that grants you access to all movies and TV shows.
A streaming service for iTunes movies and TV shows would be great

Given the history of Apple upgrades causing problems with people’s music libraries, such as mucking up track names and album art in iTunes and :apple: Music, this is going to be interesting.......

I am definitely not upgrading till all of you beta test it for me.. good luck!
I kind of hated itunes had everything even if it didnt make sense.

I didn't see anywhere in the title. that said "all functions of iTunes will be part of that" anywhere in this article.

I'm not sure why people are so against iTunes. It's not that hard to use, and it seems to me that having to use multiple apps is just going to be more confusing and not as efficient. I'm a big music collection and manage over 18K of songs in my library. I still purchase vinyl and CDs and rip them into my iTunes library. I also use the syncing feature on my iPhone / iPad to sync music, playlists and encrypted backups. I share my library with my portable devices throughout the house. I'm still using v12.6.4.3 because I want to control my app library locally. I use several scripts from Doug's Scripts to make my life easier. Am I going to still be able to do any of this? If not, it looks like I will not be upgrading and just staying where I am.

That's it right there! I'm afraid they are dumbing down iTunes for those who are too lazy or dumb to learn to use it as it was intended. Seems to be a trend with Apple these days.

About six years ago I had to completely delete my entire iTunes library because every time I got in my car it would just start playing the first alphabetical thing in my library. Which happened to be some Halloween sound effects I downloaded for ambiance on the big night. Even if I deleted all the music from my phone and completely disabled every auto download option it would still download one song and start to play it. It happened to be an enya song, which was ridiculous. The only solution I ever found was to delete everything from iTunes and iCloud and never listen to music on apple software. Of course now it randomly plays a podcast...

Unfortunately that was an issue with a lot of headunits in vehicles. I had the same with a 2016 Corolla at the time. The only real way around it was to not connect the phone to the vehicle at all, or make the first song be a silent recording with the name AAAAA or something like that. I think they have fixed that in more recent vehicles though.
