So we should pay to access the songs we own and have ripped ourselves? Mmm... Not sure I'd be happy with that!
Agreed. I have thousands of music I am more than happy with and I am not prepared to pay a monthly subscription to listen to my music.

iTunes is a bit bloated but I like being able to manage my podcasts, (audio)books, music, videos and ringtones from a single place. They have already made it hard to manage ringtones (and apps before that). Splitting into multiple apps is not the way I would like it to go

Plus how do we backup? iCloud is not the way for everyone.

Will have to see what they are rolling out but I am worried

I paid enough for the phone and I pay for apple match. That’s the most I am prepared to pay and I don’t think it’s too much to ask to be able to manage my device included as part of the phone cost

Nobody needs iTunes anymore.
Apple Music is everything. As long as there's a Mac app that interfaces with Apple Music then everyone will be good.
What the heck are you talking about? I actually have and use a local music library, and many people do. I am not, nor will I ever be a streaming music user. Another shining example of the evolution of Apple Fanboys into mindless consumers of crap fed to them without any consideration for the process. Give up your computer, move to IOS land and don't come back.

There are third party tools like 3uTools for backup and related things. Not perfect, but it's a good alternative.

For the full Windows 98 experience, they should build Safari into the Finder as well. ;)

Might as well, both Apple, Microsoft and Others “borrow” from each other. Don’t need app clutter, just need a smart Finder. Playing music, movies have been part of the OS for such a long time, time to homogenize.

I'll be glad to see it go, even on Windows 10, 8700k at 4.7ghz, 32gb ram and 2x 2080 Ti's with iTunes installed on an SSD it runs like absolute crap and is severely crippled only loving 1 core.

Should have been either rewritten or scrapped years ago as it's not fit for purpose.

Bad news, it most likely is going nowhere for windows users

Only 17 years late. I’ve disposed iTunes from the beginning and refused to buy music through apple ever since they deleted my music with the awful DRM any syncing. I would have bought into Apple Music otherwise. The app is an abomination for backups as well. Good riddens.

As for iCloud, what about my iPod Classic, packed with music and podcasts, used daily for a decade.

Apple Music sucks. I don’t always want to be connected, regardless of whether or not I can always be connected.

I thought Apple was making a stand for privacy. So why do I have to stick all MY stuff in your cloud? And it is my stuff. I bought it. Not the licence, the physical media.

Link? Where can I download versions of iTunes from please?

The links are from Apple's servers. Mac and Windows versions.

Blame that on your car manufacturer, not iTunes. My car does the same thing. Solution: find or make a "silent" song and name it AAAAA or something like that.
I already found a solution. And it happened in every brand of car I rented or owned. It wasn’t exclusive to any brand for sure.

Before Apple Music, I was a subscriber to iTunes Match. What I like about Match is that I could upload the music that I have that Apple does not. Even with a very fast connection, it took 3.5 days for the process to complete (all of my CDs were ripped as Apple Lossless, so the process included down-converting what was uploaded). My question is whether they will merge that with Apple Music. I do not have a family sharing plan because we cannot share what I uploaded in iTunes Match! Each person in my family would have to have a separate iTunes Match account and have a copy of the library on their computers. I understand it's a licensing issue -- but one that should be able to be rectified. So, we shall see what we end up getting. Perhaps just iTunes in a separate music app, and separate apps for podcasts and movies.

so where iTunes Match goes to?

I have the same question. What I don't like is that if you go for the family sharing plan, you CANNOT share iTunes match unless each member pays a subscription to it.

My guess:

1. You will still have access to all purchased music
2. You will still have access to iTunes match music (whether you can upload new music that Apple doesn't have is unclear)
3. Hopefully, this new app will provide a more common-sense approach to family sharing and music you have that is not available from Apple (which is why I love iTunes Match).

Plus how do we backup? iCloud is not the way for everyone.

I would imagine that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod back-up function will be moved to a separate app as well, or remain part of the new music app. I use iCloud, but understand why some prefer local back-up.
[doublepost=1559412211][/doublepost]What happens to all those iTunes gift cards out there? Perhaps they will be allowed in the App store.

I suspect that a syncing app maybe produced for those who refuse to keep up with technology and sync over iCloud.

If only the companies "keep up with technology" and provide us a full speed 4G with no data caps...

Not to mention iCloud is too slow. Even with good Ethernet. I can upload files a lot more quicker to Google Drive. Maybe Apple should spend more money on iCloud... :D

It feels like that some on this thread just assume everyone has unlimited data plans accessible everywhere and want to stream.

I don’t want to pay for Apple Music or any streaming. I pay plenty already for my phone plan and like having my own music

If that’s not keeping up with technology then so be it... personally, I am happy with what I have now

Why not leave iTunes, the name, as iTunes? For music... you know...for "tunes". I am supposing that Apple has heavily invested in protecting trademark/copyright on the term "iTunes".

Apple already has "Music+" right? Or is that for Android? No wait... Apple Music is a subscription service.... is it? Wait.... wait Music is Google, right? Wait... I see Music+ is and altogether cross platform software not related to Android or Apple except as a downloadable app. So Apple will change iTunes to... Music?

So... is the Subscription Apple Music gonna be different from Apple's Music, the music-organizing software? Are we gonna have 2 apps named Apple Music? What happens to my playlists? And Podcasts? Is there gonna be a separate app for podcasts? Are Movies and Television going to co-exist in one app? What about the little home movies I make? What about my simple Garageband tunes and podcasts and videos? are they upload able to Music?
And I use to be able to backup my iPhone using iTunes... but I have apps, music, movies, and a TV show... will all that be backed-up in a single file, or 3 different files. Ditto with iPads.

I used to know iTunes back in 2009...

Same. I'm ok with my data plan and my local music files saved on the phone. iCloud backups aren't happening though.

I think it got to a point the brand is too damaged ("bloatware!!!") to keep going. iTunes is Apple's Internet Explorer at this point. I love the program and it works fine but we have to be realistic.

I think that most of iCloud physically resides on Amazon servers. I know at least some of it does. In China it resides solely on Chinese servers. Supposedly neither Amazon nor the Chinese can read the data stored on those servers, because it is uploaded already in a encrypted form. The encryption may be what causes iCloud to be slow.

I might believe that Amazon can’t read those encrypted files stored on their servers. I absolutely don’t believe that the Chinese servers haven’t been compromised, either with or without Apples knowledge and/or permission.

Is there a reason everyone assumes our own music Libraries, Match, etc. are going away when iTunes does? My guess is that the new Music app will basically be what the Music tab on iTunes is currently: our library, Apple Music, the Store, Radio, etc. Is there a reason that wouldn't be the case?

And just like that Apple killed off the last vestiges of owning your own music.

They said streaming would eventually take over, and here it is. The iTunes store will go away since apple doesn't want you to "own" your own music anymore. They have proven that with movies purchases. Streaming is so much better for providers (Apple, Spotifiy, etc) so much easier to gather metrics, underpay artists, manipulate playlists with "curated" selections. Its the new payola.

THIS!!! Looks like I'll increase my purchases CDs, and I'll do so off of artists' official websites where possible. It also lets me make an excuse to my wife to expand my small collection of vinyl. ;-) Again, I'll buy the LPs off of artists' websites.

people still sync their phones with iTunes with a cable?
Yes. Not everyone likes to use the cloud for everything, and there are a few things that can only be transferred to the phone via cable syncing (e.g. audiobooks that haven't been purchased from iTunes or Audible).

From what I read elsewhere the new Music app will be responsible for device management. I expect it to have similar functionality to the original iTunes before other media types such as movies and podcasts were added.

I can certainly understand the concern folks with large libraries of purchased music are having.
If I had spent years buying and collecting music and other media, I'd be wary of any major changes to the iTunes app.
I was never one to purchase music more than once in a while.

Are there alternatives out there ? I would hope so.

I don't use iTunes that often anymore. I have Apple Music for my limited needs. I don't even sync and backup my devices through iTunes anymore. Cloud backups seem to be working well for me.

This all seems a little strange....

For me though, I'm okay with separate apps. The majority of my listening is done through my iPhone. In the car with CarPlay, at work with AM, and at home with AM playing through my Sonos system.
