Just because QuickTime's Info panel says 3ivx doesn't mean the video was encoded using it.
The 3ivx plugin takes over all MPEG-4 decoding.

I can't...

1) Apple wont sell H.264 videos in iTunes because only G5s can play them - iPods can't.

2) The files are huge and large quality

3) They will cost more than $1
Dude, the big thing about H.264 is that it is totally scalable. From the HUGE HD resolutions down to 3G cell phone size. It'll play.

I'm totally psyched. I really hope that Apple comes out with a video store, because I know that I would use it, as would many others. Here's hoping!

For you h.264 naysayers, the beauty of h.264 is that it's scalable. Even if you got a beautiful HD movie from the video store, it could be encoded into something your iPod can play (although it'd take a billion years in some cases). It's possible!

So far, it seems that these will be used to provide incentives for users to purchase full albums. There was a recent article saying that music stores are going to have to start providing extras to attract more customers.

interesting... I think it'll work. People will be far more likely to purchase an album for the added video.

What's interesting is that the videos are not protected in anyway.... so I can see a large trading/p2p scene in these videos.

Question. The same file is scalable or the codec. I think it's the codec.

I did some calculations and checking. Comparing to the Batman Begins HD Trailer on the Quicktime HD site it looks like a 2 hour movie would be 5.7 GB. That is a lot of data to be downloading per movie. Granted the quality they have those encoded at is outstanding. I go double size on a 20" monitor and it still looks incredible. I would love it if you could download it and then burn it to a DVD or the upcoming blue laser DVD without having to change it's codec. Copyright would probably be a huge problem but I could afford 6 GB of space to be used as an interim until I got it on a disc.

I don't see movies coming soon but short clips and music videos I can see now.

I'm not an av expert, but it seems to me that if my G4 can't play H.264 then there is no way the iPod will be able to for some time. If video does get on the iPod it won't be H.264.

It is the codec. I think people think that you can encode a movie in H.264 and then blow it up to a Big HD screen and then also play it on a Cell Phone. If you make it high enough quality to go on the big screen it is way to big to go on the Cell Phone. If you make is small enough to fit on a phone it will look like garbage on a big screen. You can use the scalability of H.264 to use that same codec for big HD movies as well as small cell phone movies - so it is very versatile for creation. However, I am noticing that it takes a lot of processing power too.

Does anyone remember the thread about the "iStore" or something like that. Rumors said they would offer DVDs, media for your printer, and even downloadable applications. Nothing like this has been followed up on, however we have seen then new link in Tiger that lets you order ink from Apple's online store. I predict that by iTunes 5, something like this will be established.

Maybe.....Just Maybe......

H.264 iPod

H.264 Is Scalable! It Can Be Encoded In HD (Like The Quicktime Gallery), And Be Best Viewed On A G5, But It Can Also Be Encoded To Be Viewed (Quite Well) On Cell Phones. H.264 Would Play Fine On A Video iPod.

Your G4 should handle H.264 if it isn't at a super high quality setting. The Quicktime HD gallery is encoded really high.

It's from Morcheeba's Album "The Antidote"

Link

Haven't purchaced it yet, so I don't know if it's good.

Morcheeba has a new album?? I just looked at their website yesterday and saw no mention of it.

Just checked their website, STILL no mention of it... and they have an EP out too! WTF? Someone better remind the band that they're still on the web.

I could definitely see them offering videos in the future, this is all just a test for the inevitable movie store coming later on.

As for H.264 and scalability: the codec as such is scalable from 3GP to HD, but an individual file obviously isn't scalable. A 720p file will run on a G5, but there's no way in hell it'll run on an iPod. But then again, Apple wouldn't need a 720p file for an iPod. They'd have something like the PSP res (480x272) for a portable player. Maybe even 720x405 (ie. DVD-res) if they want to be cutting edge. And a file like that might be playable on a future iPod if they have a custom chip made for it.

I doubt they'd distribute HD-files just because they'd be so effing huge, it wouldn't be cost-effective for quite a while.

As for video-playback in iTunes, does it only work with iTMS-videos? I've tried adding my own music-videos, they'll show up in the library, and I'll get audio and the first frame under album-art, but I don't get any video.

Video and the motorolla phone

Does anyone think this is what was stalling the release of the new motorolla cell phone product? I know cingular is opening up this new video cell phone era and marketing it quite heavily. Is this an attack on that by motorolla carriers (does cingular use motorolla)?

Also, is this a possible marketing attack by Apple on the Microsoft announcement of XBOX2 on thursday and E3 next week? Might they be trying to plug their products first and gain a lot of media attention before they are overshadowed? It seems like the perfect time to release a video iPod to me (graduation shopping season).

AHHH I BOUGHT THIS SONG THIS MORNING!!!!!!!!!

I want these videos... how can I redownload it without it charging me?

Have you listened to the downloaded song to make sure it plays correctly?

The reason I ask is that one of the songs I downloaded from iTMS was messed up (lots of static). I sent an e-mail and the next time I logged-in, I was allowed to re-download the song for free. Perhaps, if your download was similarly corrupted :p you could e-mail iTMS.

In my case, the re-download was also messed up and Apple has since removed it from the store.

I don't think so. What would the cost be for? Yes, Apple would be paying for the storage and bandwith for the downloads which would be significant compared to a song, but not really anything in the big scheme. The reason that we have to pay for songs is that the artists and labels expect to get paid for them. However, the artists and labels pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to create music videos to help sell more albums. So, instead of only having their music video play a few times a day on MTV, they could provide them with single or album downloads for free.

If a music video for a song I really like came with purchase of the album, I would be more likely to buy the whole album instead of just the single. This would create more revenue for everyone with really no additional expenses (remember, they are already creating the music videos no matter what).

Video Player Jukebox = Good Idea

I have been having fun using iTunes as a video jukebox. Now i dont have to individually open a quicktime window to view them. And it was smart the way they used the albulm art window to show it as apposed to a new windows, which other video jukeboxes for apple use. I just wish I knew the codecs that were supported.

Also... i wonder if apple will have a new ipod or just update the ipod photo somehow. Maybe a new one tomorrow at the music confrence thing...

No Software Update Yet...

4.8's still not showing up in my software update--not sure if that's across the board. Seems like something like this deserves some sort of "big" announcement on good ol' Tuesday...

I tried to download the Thievery Corporation single/album with the video. And I got an error. I really want to see this video stuff in action. There is serious potential for something like this. I would snag a video iPod the instant they came out; it would seriously help the bus trips across town and campus.
