I wonder if they take the "loss" by keeping the prices low since there are fewer people in the UK. Unrelated, but what would the adjective be for someone from the United Kingdom? United Kingdommers?
Good question! The official phrase is typically ‘the UK population’ given that it encompasses several territories. Or ‘limeys’ if that’s easier 😜

When I tell people that I still buy my music, I get laughed at.
Obviously it's everyone's choice, but my rationale - that I would have to buy as much music as the cost of a streaming service to justify Apple Music, which would be about 10 tracks a month - makes sense unless you're willing to treat music as one customisable radio station that you don't own.
Most of my music has come from 0.99 purchases (about 2 or 3 a month from what I've Shazammed) and CDs.

Yeah I still buy music too, even music from iTMS. It gets uploaded to my personal Plex server and I access using PlexAmp app. Works wonderfully. Shame Apple didn't keep TimeCapsule around and extend it with a personal media server feature (or turn the original AppleTV into a personal media server). I love having my own library and being able to stream it all over to my phone.

As crazy as it sounds, the PlexAmp app is nicer feeling to me than the stock Music app at this point. There's no popups or interstitials trying to get you to subscribe to Apple Music. It feels like I have domain over my own stuff.

I still try to spend about € 10 each month in the iTMS. I want to support the artists I actually listen to. If I listen to a song less than 10 times I can do that on YouTube.

The user base of at least the Dutch store changed in a big way over the years. While general pop songs were on top until streaming took over, the top charts now consist for > 50% of Dutch “levenslied” songs. These were almost non-existing in the top 20 before, but the amount of music from that genre didn’t increase. The audience however is really dedicated to those artists.

Wish apple music let me remove the radio, listen now, and browse buttons. I have my own music thanks 🙄

15 years ago, my daughters band got 70 cents for every 99 cent per song sold on iTunes. Now one daughter releases new songs and gets 1/3 to 1/2 cent per song listened to on Spotify or Apple Music.

That's 1/140th to 1/210th of the previous payouts. And people complain about the quality of new music.

Does anyone else remember when iTunes Home Sharing was enabled for anyone on the same network – so for those of us lucky enough to be at uni in the early/mid 2000s to be able to drop into your flatmates/neighbours Music Library and listen into their tunes?! Good times.

-edit- here's a screenshot of iTunes Music Sharing from 2004!

I'd give MacRumors an additional $25/yr for a selectable feature inhibiting any article based on decade+ anniversaries of an Apple product. I'm getting tired of feeling old as dirt! :p

I wish they would upgrade iTunes Music Store songs to the higher quality files they have available through Apple Music - I’d also pay to upgrade my purchases.

I don’t like that my library is a mix of lower and higher quality files. If the same quality was available in the iTunes Music Store, I’d probably eventually switch to only buying music again.

It would also be interesting to compare how much your daughter(s) earned on a particular song sold on iTunes vs streamed now on all the possible platforms.

My guess is that streaming can actually get them more “listens”, as their songs can be suggested to people by the algorithms?

Yea but songs aren't 99¢ anymore. Also I am paying to have any song anywhere anytime on any device, too. I do own a considerable number of songs, but having access to the whole music catalog is reason enough for me. Another benefit for me is I have kids that listen to kid-centric music. I have no desire to own the Teen Titans Go soundtrack knowing that I won't need it for too much longer, but its nice to ask siri to play it in the car.

I definitely can't begrudge someone preferring to own, rather than rent music, but it serves me well.
How much are songs now a days????

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Apple launching the iTunes Music Store, allowing Mac users to download music for "just 99 cents per song."

iTunes-Music-Store-2003.jpeg

At launch, the iTunes Music Store offered over 200,000 songs from music labels such as Sony, Universal, and Warner, with free 30-second previews of any song. The store provided convenient access to songs on an à-la-carte basis at a time when pirating music was rampant via peer-to-peer file sharing programs such as LimeWire and KaZaA.

"The iTunes Music Store offers the revolutionary rights to burn an unlimited number of CDs for personal use and to put music on an unlimited number of iPods for on-the-go listening," said Apple's former CEO Steve Jobs, in an April 28, 2003 press release. "Consumers don't want to be treated like criminals and artists don't want their valuable work stolen. The iTunes Music Store offers a groundbreaking solution for both."

Apple expanded iTunes and the online music store to Windows in October 2003. At the time, Apple said customers had purchased more than 13 million songs from the iTunes Music Store, making it the "number one download music service in the world."

Apple has gradually phased out the iTunes brand over the past few years, and the music store is now located in the Music app on the Mac. iTunes has also been overshadowed by Apple Music and other streaming music services, with many customers now opting to pay a monthly subscription fee for unlimited access to up to 100 million songs.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, but this really did invert the business proposition for the music industry forever. It truly was a revolution for them.

The clarity in the UI is still exceptional, but it's far from perfect. That 👁️ for Browse is awful. But the Source list was clear and it was also clear where things lived. If your song was on a portable device, it was sync'd. This led the way to what was the ultimate masterstroke for conversion. First, you dip your toe in with this, and a Mac mini, and then a few years later it was the Intel switch.

Those two things are why we're still on this forum today.

ITunes was such a great thing 20 years ago. Easy convert audio files, working in mp3's. Playing music with no problems in windows 2000...
I Wish there would be one stabile and native running version for linux!!!

IMO, the iPod and the iTunes store is what completely turned Apple around and set it on its course to be the company it is today. Without them, I think Apple would have died.
