This is because of outdated security certificates.

Most likely outdated security certificates.

Probably more like updating to newer more secure protocols like TLS 1.2 or 1.3. TLS 1.1 has been being phased out by everyone. Nothing to do with certificates.

The original Apple TV is the best by far. I unfortunately never had one, but the hacks you can do with it are amazing, make it run OSX if you want and have one awesome Media PC.
Meh Apple ditching older platforms is just it’s typical self. Make people update, Windows XP was one of the best versions.

Good thing no one builds Apple TVs into an actual TV. Hate to think you can't use your TV because it is deemed "obsolete."

Or what if the TV worked with all the existing content but the store didn’t work due to security? So you could buy a TV or simply upgrade it with Apple TV box for £70 not so bad now eh?

I use my OG Apple TV. Obviously not my only Apple TV. Not happy Apple is doing that. Windows that’s fine, whatever. Not a good look for Apple.

So the big difference here is that a computer is a multi purpose tool. The Apple TV was specifically sold to have this feature. Selling a fridge, then removing its ability to keep food cold wouldn’t go down well. What if your TV suddenly wasn’t able to show TV channels. I’d be surprised if Apple doesn’t get into trouble for this by owners.

Fine if they want to do this but offer an upgrade/ swap out but to just brick your device is not on.

This is dumb. What's wrong with letting iTunes function on XP and Vista? I mean, I don't use those OS's, but I see no reason to prevent them from accessing the iTunes store. And who is Apple to tell people they can't use their old Apple TV's anymore? I mean, those old ones are total crap; but still, if people want to use them then they should have every right to do so.
May wanna actually read the content not just the title! If Microsoft isn’t supporting their older OS why and how could apple?

I think it's fair. 12 years is a very long time for technology, and in fairness they did a more than fair job at supporting it for all this time. Many other brands stop supporting their devices 3-4 years after launch.

It's because of GDPR, the European Union privacy policies. Though they don't say it, May 25 is the day that GDPR takes effect. So those old app stores just can't be updated for that.

Nope, GDPR is May 25.

So this isn't clear to me...the article says that the old Apple TV "will no longer work with the iTunes Store". So, if I still had one of these, could I still purchase videos from my Mac on the iTunes store and watch them on the 1st gen Apple TV?

In that case, this is much more reasonable. It's not like Apple would be bricking the product, just removing the direct to internet store... lots of things do that eventually.

Of course you can. You just have to download the videos from the store onto your computer first. You can't stream them from the iTunes store from what I understand.

I have an ATV2. I wonder of one day this too will happen with it. I have no plans to buy a new ATV until this one quits working.

Windows 7 is EOL as well so you shouldn't be running that if you want security updates.
Except that windows 8 is crap and windows 10 barely functions properly. I went back to windows 7 because it was too much of a hassle.
Btw windows 7 will continue to receive security updates until 2020

Apple is obviously doing this to sell new Windows PCs. Let me know when I can get in on the class action lawsuits.;)

At least I can still play my video purchases on Snow Leopard in iTunes.

Yes, and let's hope you can continue to.

Improved security is fine. But about the time they require the latest-version-of-a-train-wreck of iTunes to use said service, well—then I will not be happy. I'm presently using iTunes 10.7 for a reason.

I would love to upgrade to some new Apple hardware and software—particularly (and only) if it actually proved an "upgrade" and improvement, something to look forward to and Just Worked as intended, in a pleasant fashion. Or, more or less what has NOT been the case with Apple the last several years.

But would the DRM authentication still work? Does the first gen apple TV connect directly to the iTunes store to determine whether a viewer is authorized to watch the video, or is it more like an iPod, in which the authorization is checked in the transfer to the apple tv?

Maybe they are dropping support because the certificates are expiring. Has nothing to do with hardware?
