It's not going to be iTV, just like the iPod wasn't the iMusic Player, and the iPad wasn't the iTablet. They'll try and differentiate it by calling it something completely different. It'll start with an i, and refer (perhaps only tangentially) to a television screen. Something that perhaps refers to the simplicity of use. That's about all we know. People get paid a lot to come up with these names, and they aren't necessarily something you'd think of... just look at some of the names of media packages - FiOS, Xfinity, etc.

Wow they getting bend out of shape for something that was already decided in 2006 with changing it from iTV to Apple TV.
I mean come on.

The iMac, iPad, and iPhone all describe what they are after the "i". The iPod was the only abstract name.

iHDTV End of discussion. The chances of Apple waisting money, time on the iTV mark are slim to none.

What is it with those people across the pond??? Any remember the decades long ordeal from Apple Corps?

Sosumi.

You're obviously smart.

I think he was referring to this company, iTV entertainment, who are completely different company from the UK-based ITV.

http://itvent.com/

This is the one mentioned in the article. Confusing, I know..

I'm pretty sure people will get confused when they type itv.com into their browser expecting Apple iTV and get ITV.

And I REALLY doubt Apple will try and claim itv.com

it will NOT EVER be called "iHDTV" or "iABC123", or any other random series of letters. End of THAT discussion.

I know, probably wasn't the best example, as there really isn't any that Apple is gradually moving away from using the 'i'.

As far as naming conventions go, they dropped the "Power" from their Mac line (PowerMac, PowerBook...). Now, they've dropped "Mac" from the OS X name. Maybe 'i' is the next thing they'll gradually drop from the name of any new forms of product.

in an ideal world, :apple: would drop product names entirely. ;)
(i'm kidding).

Introducing the Phone 5

while others have believed that "iTV" would be the company's preferred name even though it raises potential trademark and branding issues with other entities such as the UK's ITV network.

I just LOVE how Mac Rumors plays it all down with the word 'potential', you know, because legal warnings across Apples bow mean potential and not, we'll see you in court if you dare use iTV.

Anyway cue the 10 year olds stating Apple should just buy all the company's called ITV etc....

Maybe the word "tv" is outdated anyway, if they insist on using i-something, I'm sure they could find something else like iView, iVision, etc. No one saw "iPad" coming (everyone thought it would be some variant of "slate" or "tablet"), now it's part of the global vocabulary.

They won't call it iTV because it's stupid and unimaginative, and simply an extension of a technology that's dying.

There has never been a better time to drop the television moniker altogether as the internet and the large format computer/viewing screen continue to merge. Perhaps even a good time to move away from the i* naming scheme.

"Hughes is clearly trying to bait Apple into entering the bidding to secure the rights to the trademark"

Like Apple has a long track record of being "baited" into doing stuff... :p

If they had the opportunity again....

I totally think Apple should (and may well) go for a totally new name.

If they want to revolutionise the living room give it a new product.

Ok, it will be a variant of what we know as a TV but it will essentially be a streaming device for iCloud, iTunes, regular TV channels, On-Demand content etc. Plus TV channels as we know them won't exist in the future. ABC/HBO/ITV/BBC etc will be internet driven services that release programmes at set times, like House at 9pm every Friday or Eastenders at 8pm every Monday and so forth. You can stream live or watch at your leisure.

Essentially Apples new 'TV' is a multimedia device.

I would be intrigued to know if Apple had the opportunity again would they go for a different approach....

iTunes is a multimedia platform/channel
iPod is a multimedia device
iPhone is a multimedia device
iPad is a multimedia device
'iTV' will be multimedia device

Replace iTunes with iMedia
and have 4 devices called iPlayers

iPod - iPlayer Nano (clip on size)
iPhone - iPlayer Micro (pocket size)
iPad - iPlayer Mini (bag size)
iTV - iPlayer Max (room size)

I know my names are crap but it illustrates the point.
.
.
.
Plus BBC own iPlayer. Us Brits are really not helping here!!

"iThis" and "iThat" name is getting old

Apple needs to move on. the "iThis" and "iThat" name is getting old. Think of something new PLEASE.

The term "television" to most people, I think, means "over the air broadcast". That certainly can't be what Apple is working on.

Let's all hope that Apple will come out with a product none of us have seen before. Maybe a kind of universal screen for video phone calls and watching movies and playing games and maybe you control it by simply talking to it.

I'd really like to see a siri-like AI that is the SAME AI on all your devices and on the new TV. Then I tell her once and it's like one person who hapens to hav multiple screens. HAL in 2001 was like that. He was the same person no matter where in the ship yu went. the new TV should work like that if you have multiple sceeens, iPhones or Macs.

This way Apple could be unique. Apple could offer a unified AI bt Sony or Samsung could not

They won't call it iTV. Not because of this guy, but because of ITV in the UK.

I think it's time for Apple to stop using 'i' in front of any brand new products, such as their television set, or a completely revamped iTunes media centre. The 'i' is just overused: iOS, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iWork, iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac, iMessage to name a few. They've transitioned iCal to Calendar in Mountain Lion, so maybe they are giving up using the 'i'.

I think I would like to see the transition out of 'i' more too. Imagine how many of the 'i' third party companies and products that formed from Apple's success to leach a little would be. Within a month you would see more companies changing/creating their names to imitate the new Apple marketing naming convention lol.

Would be cool if Apple made the printer again.

ITV already sold out Einsteins....

Smart mobe by Hughes, smart move.

This appears to be evident from the fact that ITV Network’s U.S. application for the ITV trademark went abandoned on January 13, 2012 – even though it had a filing date of May 5, 2006; and just week or so ago, Paul Dale (CTO, CIO, COO) of ITV Plc tweeted “I’m at Apple Europe! CIO Briefing, by invitation only ;-) ”.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

GO PAT!

Like Apple is going to respond to that letter... might as well give up all their secrets and announce every new project that is in the pipe works at tomorrow's event.

Do these people really think Apple is dumb?

No, Apple is very smart. So is ITV UK, y did they drop their trademark in US?

Looks to me like a legal maneuver to lay claim publicly rather than after the fact.

And Steve "down to every pixel" Jobs loved symmetry. iTV fits the product line, no?
