'Reports are Entirely Speculative'

"ITV has denied that there is any truth in reports that it has approached Apple to warn it off using the ITV name. The Telegraph suggested this morning that British television network ITV's CEO Adam Crozier had written a letter to Apple regarding the use of the name iTV in its products, which reflects a number of recent rumors regarding a forthcoming Apple-branded TV."

*Sigh*

I do wish so-called journalists would at least try to verify speculation.

Fine lets call them flat panel by apple. I don't care what its called, i still want one. And i don't care what irrelevant company is claiming the IP, they only did that because of the iPod in the first place. Sounds like karma is coming back to bite them in the ass.

----------

Besides i'm sure it hardly damages the media outlets reputation by being mistaken for a top of the line television set.

Yes, they saw the success of the iPod, then invented a time machine and went back to the 1950s to start using the brand of ITV:rolleyes: Did you actually bother to read the posts? ITV has been used as a brand for over 50 years. Take off your blinkers and try looking out into the big wide world at some facts, rather than just living in the RDF.

Ahh Sunday's. Roast dinner, bath before school the next day, watch the Muppet Show while mum does the washing up before we all settle in front of the telly to watch Sale of the Century. We only had 3 channels but somehow there seemed more programmes worth watching. LOL

:D Yep, that sounds right to me! And remember Eric & Ernie sharing a bed in their sketches, no-one batted an eyelid at that....

"I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!"

ITV is an international company and with the exception of Downton Abbey which won several Golden globes, they churn out crap like the X factor and its ilk which I doubt apple would want to be associated with.

Just to point out, ITV don't make/produce X factor they just broadcast it on their channel and have very little say in the show.

Apple TV sounds much better than iTV. In the UK it would cause confusing between iTV and ITV a lot and ITV is a international company and would most probs win the legal battle if Apple went ahead with iTV. 50 Years against 1/2 Years...

ITV is worth $306bn, I can't see Apple taking it over just for the trademark "iTV".

You could buy controlling interest (51% of the voting stock) in ITV for less than 1% of your inflated "worth", which is less than 2% of Apple's cash position. Then all you would have to do is replace enough board members to fire any executives or lawyers who try to would defend the trademark. Then sell the 51% to an investment firm who promised not to hire them back to recoup a large part of the purchase price. Done.

Tell me more about the legal implications of buying out a public service broadcaster in this way.

Done. Completely illegal in the UK, but done...

Although I dislike ITV as a broadcaster, I can see why they're preparing for a battle. Apple would not want to rename the product for one country (increase manufacturing, marketing costs etc) only over a naming issue.

ITV is a household name over here. To be honest, they should be discussing some licensing/exclusivity deal to get one over the BBC whilst they have a chance if Apple want to go down this route.

I mean, if they use the "i" name, all other suggestions such as iTube, iTelly, iVision all sound silly IMO.

This is a great opportunity for little and lowly ITV. Apple's knocking on their door isnt down to their expertise or remarkable output. It's just good fortune such a reverred company just happens to use an 'i'. This tie-up is well underway i reckon.

Meh, the Apple TV still sucks compared to TiVO. Sure it works with Apple stuff well and is much much better than Google TV and stuff, but WHERE IS THE COAX INPUT?!!!!!!?!!!!????????! It's not even really TV unless it's got an antenna/cable/satellite TV input and recording capability. And didn't Apple stop selling TV shows on iTunes? So all you can watch is movies and whatever stuff you have synced with it.

TiVO has all the streaming capability needed, and it can record stuff from the coax input. There is a TiVO remote app for iOS, so we connected one TiVO to all of our TVs and just use the remote app to control it.

Well, the Apple TV is much better than similar things like Google TV (horrible) and stuff.

The Apple TV is nothing like a TiVo. A TiVo is a DVR, and Apple TV is a streaming device.

It's gonna be pretty weird if Apple starts selling TVs. Sure, TVs are consumer electronics, I just don't see it as Apple's thing. On the other hand, if they revolutionize the TV like they have done with so many other products, it could be a huge success.

This reminds me of the hilarious-in-retrospect "It's gonna be pretty weird if Apple starts selling mobile phones" comments ;)

The sentence says: "However, insiders fear that the world's biggest company might take a different stance under Tim Cook, who replaced Steve Jobs as chief executive shortly before Mr Jobs died in August last year."

That makes it sound like they are saying Mr Jobs died in August last year (" shortly before Mr Jobs died in August last year."). It is missing punctuation or poorly written if they are saying that Tim Cook replaced Steve Jobs in August. Obviously, Tim replaced Steve in August, and Steve died in October.

Tim Cook replaced Steve Jobs in August, which was before Steve died. The sentence is completely factual, if only written in a confusing way.

You may be interested to see that today's UK Independent newspaper reports ITV share price spiked late on yesterday as "vague rumours made a return that Apple could be interested in a potential approach".

It should be noted that the UK's ITV has long be rumoured to be a bid target, with traders often speculating a bid could arise from Apple, private equity, a US network or RTL.

Given Apple's strategy on advertising revenues, it would seem to be in contrast to what ITV's strategy so I would make this a low probability event but worth sharing...

I think that "iVision" would be a possibility. It could be cheaper for Apple than having to deal with the legal implications and confusion of "iTV" in the UK.
