Damn it. I was considering ordering an iMac refurb tonight. Do I wait or pull the trigger now? This will be my first REAL Mac. I have been Hackintoshing for the past 3 years.

Possibly but read the article.

Would this include Mac Minis? I will be needing one in the next month. I'd hate to upgrade right before a release.
The chips are not scheduled to ship until the end of April so it is a good possibility that it could be May before Apple ships anything. Further if the rumors of HiDPI machines is true they might hold off shipping anything until Mountain Lion is out.

Actually in the case of the Mini it doesn't make much difference as the screen is external and not included. Knowing Apple though they likely won't lead with the Mini when delivering Ivy Bridge.

I just hope they put maybe a Intel Core i7 Extreme in the Macbook Pro :)

The i5 desktop chips do not have hyper-threading, but they do have turbo-boost.

They have the ability to hyper thread but the function is disabled for reasons unknown. Maybe Intel need some way of differentiating the i5 and i7 otherwise they are virtually identical.

All I want is for the top of the line 27" iMac to come with an i7 as standard so I don't have to wait for a build to order. Very impatient person :p

A 45 watt chip is not impossible in the Mini.

It all depends upon how Apple configures the machines. If they do away with the discrete GPU model they could deliver a Mini with a 45 watt ivy Bridge. I believe that is close to the current quad core Mini server. It would limit their ability to offer a range of models but that can be addressed in other ways. One way to address that is to simply beef up the power supply in the Mini.

On the other hand Apple seems to like the triptych approach to Mini marketing so if that mentality remains we could have to wait until June. The important thing here is nothing is set in stone.

So, to break it down for the MINI fans, I myself wanting to buy an update the minute it appears, the mobile chips with low wattage which fit the Mini appear on the June 3rd date.

I'd make a safe assumption that the Mini will therefor not appear on the market until mid-June or later. On schedule, essentially. Looking forward to it, assuming they actually do an update this year.
It would be extremely foolish for them not to update the Mini as soon as possible Ivy Bridge addresses one big issue with the Mini which is the GPU. The alternative for Apple is an AMD chip. Interestingly Trinity will be on the market about the same time as the June IB. Frankly I'd rather see Trinity in the Mini.

The mobile side of things tends to get preferential treatment with hyperthreading enabled and a full GT2 IGP. (12/16 EUs)

Haswell is going to bring a monster GT3 (40 EU) IGP to the field.

Those are desktop processors. I was key in mentioning the mobile side of things.

I know. I use the alternative explanation because it's easier for some people to understand given things like the mini, which uses mobile parts.

Current 2720QM quad core processor in 15" MBP has a TDP of 45W, resulting in high system temperature and increased fan speeds. I don't see how Apple could decrease the size of the MBP and put in a quad core Ivy Bridge with a 45W TDP. So it's back to dual core systems until Haswell comes out?

Edit: Unless they ditch the dedicated graphics card entirely...

Well... I wouldn't bet on these rumors. The 45W cpu isn't the only thing that runs temperatures high. It's been discussed to death on here, but other computers do use similar cpus without constant fans, and they're not all twice as thick as a macbook pro;).

The mini server already uses a 45W cpu. The cpu cost is around the same of the discrete gpu mini if I remember correctly. They just went with kind of a limiting case for it in favor of compactness. This seems to be a high priority for Apple in general in that they're willing to compromise on specs to get there. I kind of hope they don't do that with their laptops. At some point they kind of become the same machine. The mini "server" kool-aid is dumb anyway. I

Dear Lord...

Please Remind Them Each And Every Day
As I Stare At The Calendar And Pray
For A Mac Pro With The Fastest CPU
And A Thunderbolt Port If Not Two
That To Forsake The Pro Line Of The Mac
Would Be Like Choking On Some Bad Crack
In The Business Way Of Course Do I Speak
Less Options Makes The Future Look Bleak
And If You Foresee Only Doom And Dread
And A Mac Pro That Is Buried And Dead
Then Let Them Offer Their OS On A PC
A Hackintosh Is A Last Resort For Me

maybe apple has early access to these chips and will release new macs early next month?

All of Intel's big partners have had access to the chips (proto and pre-production) for months, and are probably getting production chips already.

Intel's "release date" is when vendors can sell systems to end users - not when Intel ships chips to vendors.

The idea that Apple gets "early access" is mostly a myth spread by Apple fans - in most cases the "early access" claim falls apart when scrutinized.

I don't know how people are still claiming this with the number of times it's been debunked. The worship gets a little creepy at times.

Why should they? The next MBP has a thinner ODD.

The next MacBook Pro will not have an ODD. They can't be any thinner than they are in the 2011 MBP. It still takes up too much space.

The ODD is going away. If you can't afford $30 for an external ODD then I suggest you look at more affordable brands of laptops.

Some "Apple Legends" have an ADF (Anti-Debunking Field) - no matter how many times you throw facts at them, they can't be debunked from the minds of the fans.

;)

Mac Pro Future?

I'm curious how much longer Apple will make the Mac Pro? Apple used to make software like Shake, Final Cut Studio, etc that really enjoyed the power the Mac Pro offered. However, what is Apple's current power hungry application? I'd have to go with Final Cut Pro X. Have you seen the specs of the current iMacs? 2 GB of video ram, 3.4 Ghz Quad-core i7 processors, 16 GB ram, 2 TB internal 7200 RPM hard drive and optional 256 GB ssd drive... WOW! POWERHOUSE! So... what Apple software CURRENTLY MADE AND SUPPORTED needs a Mac Pro? Don't get me wrong, I really want a new Mac Pro myself. I hope it's made for a very long time. I just don't see why Apple would continue to invest money in it. Imagine if they made a little iMac tower without the screen. Hmmmm. Maybe a super duper Mac Mini?

Maybe someone can clarify, is this update supposed to be a MBP update or a macbook air update? The reason why I ask is because I'm waiting on MBP update, but I would think that this would have a discrete graphics card as some people here have pointed out. I don't know enough about computers but it seems that the intel ivy bridge would be for the macbook air since they don't get put into computers with discrete graphics cards, is this correct? Anyways, maybe someone with more knowledge about this can help me out.

While there will be a time when a machine the size of the Mac Pro is no longer needed to do the tasks it can do, the time is not now.

So from one to another, the date has slipped from start of april to now the end, and then there is the odd MAY release creeping up. Have been waiting for this since last june and didnt want to buy the late 2011 MBP with a slight spec bump, hope this really packs the punch most people are anticipating.

Bull f***king ****... show me ONE shred of evidence saying that DVD, CD, and Blu-Ray technology are GOING AWAY anytime soon... not everybody drinks that kool-aid in which you obviously are indulging.

Please Apple, update the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro soon, and we're good. I've been wanting to buy one for the last few months but don't want to take the plunge just before a refresh.

This will not stop me buying Mac mini i7 amd 6630 this weekend. Life is too short.. I hate waiting!
