The Iwalk movies are faked. The item IS a real thing, shuttle and all, but it's not an Apple product.

The guys did a great job tho on the compositing, but there are certain little anomolies that happen when you mix real footage with CG.

What is Apple's new thing? Who knows. But if you read the headline from Apple's site you COULD draw 2 conclusions:

The systems are ging to perform better than anything ever has OR there's a new PC that can "go where no PC has gone before".

Take a look at the Powerbook...

Shrink the LCD, drop the CD, keyboard, get rid of all ports add a "universal port" and an audio out jack.

iWalk? Maybe... but what if it was a complete PowerMac 667 in a 4x6 or 5x7 package... But wait folks... that's not all... Take it back home and sit it in it's cradel that has a monitor, mouse and keyboard attached... firewire, etc...

A $1500 computer that IS a PDA, IS an MP3 player, DOES play Qtime movies in the field... BUT then goes back to the office and becomes a desktop workstation...

Nahhhhh.....

More likely a new LCD iMac with G4's, G5 towers and a 10 gig Color iPod that plays Quicktime movies too... (and even has video outs)

Strange control...

I vote fake.

The thing that does it for me is the knob. Theoretically, this knob would allow you to do absolutely pointless things like turn the screen to a diagonal. I can think of no reason why this would be useful (if anyone else can, then by all means share). Apple would most likely have buttons or options for rotating the screen ninety degrees if this option were included in a product, not a wheel.

The movies are of an EARLY prototype!! That explain your observations about out-dated scroll wheel, older materials used and over-use of branding. "In house" prototypes are always rough around the edges. Expect to see a more refined look with newer materials like i-Pod et al. They leaked this to start the HYPE! They will over-deliver on your expectations........ marketing 101

catbert, please explain why:

* The text jitters in the say hello movie (not to mention that the last k is practically illegible, and notice the blink in the top left is perfectly in sync with the insertion point)

* If this product is an "early prototype," Apple surely wouldn't have gone to the trouble of applying for FCC approval, especially when they don't even have serial numbers yet.

* The power button was tapped to power on the device, and also tapped to reorient the screen. This button is on the bottom and would easily turn the unit on in your pocket. How could the machine tells whether or not to reorient the machine?

* Minor quibble - the password screen said "Go."

* iWalk, in a slightly modified form, is a trademark of Microsoft.

* German power outlet and voicing—how convenient.

Many more, but my back hurts and I'm too tired to think.

positron !

I'm tired tooo buddy!

* I think the jittery text is a result of flexing table, flexing screen and optical illusion.

* I can't read the info on back, but the text could be mock ups for asthetic testing..ie: does the back look good, should we make the text smaller, etc. This is done all the time.

* I can't explain the power button placement, but it appears he touches two buttons there. One on left, one on right?

* password screen, modified MS trademark, overseas power outlet...who knows..I'm goin' to bed!

Good night Mr. Jobs! where ever you are...

Spymac is a German site. The people who run the site are German. Yet they say that the German power outlet and voices were there to "disguise the real source." Yeah right. It's quite interesting that an Apple insider managed not only to smuggle the device out of Apple, abut through customs as well, all the way to Germany, only to return it 30 minutes later.

I am not entirely sure that anyone but a devout Apple freak at customs would notice anything odd about the device. Also, what exactly do you mean about it going to Germany for 30 minutes and then coming back? If it is faked, it's a great fake. If not, then we are going to be one happy community.

I think that it's a hoot reading all of the reasons that people thought the smuggled images of G4 Cubes and Quicksilver were faked. And of course, they weren't.

According to spymac some time ago, they only had access to the device for 30 minutes. Look, I'm not saying it's not real, I'm just saying it's very unlikely. Sorry, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade... but I am a skeptic.

When Apple does early prototypes, they use clear casings, not snow cases.

This is not an early prototype. This is a beta 2 model. Apple hasn't copyrighted it yet though, so they would not leak it out on purpose.
