I think it is correct to assume that Apple will not mount a full frontal assault on Microsoft Office, nor do they need to. I suspect that they have identified some need/function that un/under served and they will address that. It will likely be a 80/20 kind of thing (look at iCal, Mail, Keynote, Safari as examples).

I would welcom this (as opposed to the "just add features" mode of software development). Not all features are equally important. No one seems to understand this (about software especially).

Filings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (you can search by serial number) show that Apple has registered iWork:
Serial Number: 78462838
Mark (words only): IWORK
Current Status: Newly filed application, not yet assigned to an examining attorney.
Filing Date: 2004-08-05
Last Applicant(s)/Owner(s) of Record: Apple Computer, Inc.
History: 2004-08-13 - New Application Entered In Tram
and that IGG Software was the previous registrant, with the change made last August, apparently based on a request made in February:
Serial Number: 78227786
Mark (words only): IWORK
Current Status: Further action on the application has been suspended.
Filing Date: 2003-03-19
Last Applicant(s)/Owner(s) of Record: IGG Software, LLC
History: 2004-02-20 - Communication received from applicant
2004-03-04 - LETTER OF SUSPENSION E-MAILED
2004-08-20 - Report Completed Suspension Check Case Still Suspended

It doesn't seem to me that this is aimed at pushing Office off the Mac and it doesn't seem to me that Mircosoft would take it that way unless Apple agressively markets it that way (which I highly doubt they do) But, inversley maybe Mircosoft could take it as "If you don't star coding you POS software to run correctly on are OS we have an alternative and the knowledge of how to compete to the pro software biz, so straighten up and fly right" while at the same time providing a cheap and nice solution for home users. :D
I for one would like to see a Quicken killer though.

The same IGG Software has an app called iBank . It's not as feature rich as Quicken, but it will probably get there. And now that IGG has recieved a large influx of cash ;) I'm sure they will be hard at work on it.

This is not a MS Office Competitor

Go Thinksecret! Delighted to see Apple creating a new application, but I think that the ''i" gives it away as a consumer app.

iBook (consumer) vs. Powerbook (pro)
iMac (consumer) vs. Powermac (pro)
iMovie (consumer) vs. FCP (pro)

etc.

That naming convention works for just about every consumer app except Garageband. (Which is just too good a name to not use).

Cheers,

Awesome! It's about time there was an update to Appleworks, which by now has become pretty useless. Hopefully Apple will include some compatibility with the M$ Office suite, since they are so tight with the M$ Apple production group now. Keynote will blow away PP though! :)

What kind of high end stuff are all you people doing that makes appleworks useless?

Do you guys all drive hummers because you don't think a honda accord can handle the paved roads you drive on as well?

I apologize in advance if this question was perviously asked or dumb but does anyone know if this will be better than Word for word processing.

Define "better."

Regardless, nothing is known about the specifics of the app. You'll just have to wait until it's released (it hasn't even been announced!) or until someone on the inside leaks more info before then.

That...and no one even knows if it is a word processor!

I love speculation and all that...but this is getting crazy. I need only a stop watch to measure the time that rumor goes from rumor to "well I can't believe it doesn't have X feature. I'm not buying it!"...and "$99 is way too much...they are insane!"

LOL

So much fun.

How to get rich:

1) Trademark every remaining name in the world that relates to productivity or iLife uses of some kind and has i in the name. Everything from iWatch to iTV to iPage to iFart.

2) Force Apple to pay you money for the name.

yay!

...Apple's game suite, soon to be announced, is rumored to be called "iProcrastinate" to reflect the suite's time-wasting powers...

Give me iAccess! & IExchange!

I hope that it includes apps that will open/save MS access files and do decent Exchange calendaring. Then maybe I could get some of my customers off of the slow VPC.

Yes, Entourage supposedly "supports" exchange, but it doesn't do calendar's well. And while FileMaker finally went with a relational database, it still doesn't work with MS Access files. Those are the two key programs that cause some of my users to need VPC.

I've gotta say... I mentioned this and the headless mac to my mom last night, and she got all excited. My dad will be happy as long as he can do documents in word-compatible format and spreadsheets in excel-compatible format. Especially once I tell him about plugging his camera in and having stuff magically work together. So they might buy one, because they're sick and tired of their sony pc.

So it looks like maybe 2 sales in this house, so far... especially since mine will be with student discount hopefully :)

Add two more sales. I mentioned it to two PC using friends and both got very excited and said they would be buying. Two things I can think of that would make it a huge hit is if:

1) it is able to use either a USB or PC connector based keyboard (people like their interfaces)

2) it runs Windows out of the box (better than VirtualPC - cross compile, or at least just-in-time)

Those would make it a Windoze box killer and ease the transition for PC users.

Apple release a MS Office killing word processor for $79 you can be pretty sure there would be 100+ negatives whining about everything under the sun.

:-D

I hope that iWork (if it is an office suite) is fully compatible with MS Office and use it as a replacement.

I don't see how Apple could expect it to be AT ALL successful if it didn't.

Another sites take

From Macshrine.com:

Sources have confirmed Steve Jobs is to present iWork at Macworld next week. The software is to contain Keynote 2 and a new word processing app called Notes. It is also to carry another app related to Keynote 2. Changes for Keynote include a new 'Media' tab and lots more effects and transitions. Apple Notes is to ship free with all future Macs, including the future headless iMac

I don't know how reliable this site is but it sounds good.

Don't worry, there'll be plenty for people to complain about. Already peple are bitching about the expected noshow of PowerBook and Power Mac updates. And Tiger seems to be on a pretty slow development cycle, at least compared to other X revisions. WWDC seems to be a likely target.

Plus, these software updates are pretty average, in my opinion. Apple usually releases a couple new software title at every show (wasn't it Keynote and FCP Express last year?) along with the normal updates.

Also, I wouldn't bet on iPod updates this early in the year. The Photo and U2 versions were updated not too long ago. I expect Apple to let the dust to settle a bit from the holiday buying frenzy before introducing a flashpods. Maybe a price reduction for the minis and new colors.
Of course. Remember the PBG5 craze a while ago? Glad we're over that for now. Tiger isn't really that slow, IMO. Apple targeted first half of 2005 and that just started. Chill out, folks...

The reason this proposed iWork suite is more than any other new software is because it can mean the end of dependence on Microsoft for many Mac users. Most of us have parted with IE a long time ago (thank god for Safari) and like me keep MS Office only because there is no viable alternative. Sure, OpenOffice is certainly possible but X11 is a pain. This is something we have been hoping for for a long time. Freedom from MS!!

I wouldn't expect iPod updates either but mini updates are certainly plausible. The iPod mini was introduced at MWSF a year ago and is ready for a revision. Since the update cycle for the regular iPods have been less than a year (I believe... hit me if I'm wrong) we can surely expect updates to that line at this conference.

Interesting note, (no pun intended) the last rumor had it called Pages.

1) Apple has never supported PS/2 for a keyboard or mouse interface. They always used either ADB or USB. Moot point; it will come with a keyboard (headless Mac) and it will work with any keyboard like any OS X computer.

2) WHY THE HELL WOULD APPLE SUPPORT MICROSOFT WINDOWS? You can do anything on the PC that you would want to do on the Mac. Apple wouldn't put an x86 processor in there. That would be outdated faster than the G4 inside it. It would only run OS X and whatever PowerPC Linux flavors there are.
