I would like to be able to open an edit excel, word, ppt personal files that I keep on dropbox to be accessible everywhere. they won't be work files mainly personal stuff

would i be able to do this with current iwork version? would you recommend me to get iwork or something else (I would like to avoid ms office for mac)

iWork opens any office file. I can tell you that in the new Pages 5 you can export the document into a Word compatible doc. It saves it as a docx. I experimented with a brochure created in pages, saved it as a docx and all the formatting was retained. I opened in both Word 2011 for Mac and Word 2013.

Can't speak for numbers.

I completely agree with the sentiment. So much so I wrote an article in Medium on why is Apple doing this to the iWork faithful: https://medium.com/i-m-h-o/ba2c9173f666

If you agree with it, recommend it so it gains more relevance and more people are aware of this.

am im horrified to see ios7 design aesthetic creeping in. if this is the direction apple is taking osx, then GOOD bye.

Yes, Mac OS X will keep taking design cues from iOS. Jony Ive leads the design teams of both. Apple ain't known for offering design choices to customers. Make the best of what you got... Or, you can ask for features though you'll probably end up on wrong side of the "Thousand NOs for every YES" statistic that Apple is so proud of :)

is Openoffice worthy? i installed a couple time, bt i ended up always prefering microsoft office better. i guess i should give it another try...

openoffice or libre office? which one should i go? hum...

Well i like a few things but dislike some others, For example i like the new design but dislike the loss of functionality,

I primarily use iWorks '09 (gotta qualify that now with the newer lite version) but on those occasions where I'm not comfortable working with a file the way that Numbers does, I'll fire up NeoOffice (OSX-optimized version of OpenOffice). Periodically I'll install LibreOffice to see the progress they have been making.

If iWorks '09 disappeared, I'd probably switch to LibreOffice (rather than the new iWorks Lite) even though the user interface feels larger and more messy than the clean tight interface of Pages '09.

Users can bitch all they want. I actually love Numbers now. :)

Sure its missing some features. It kinda looks like a FCPX episode all over again so just hold on see the the features you love come back. (turned out ok for FCPX in the long run)

But damn! Finally something to dump Excel once and for all.
Thanks Apple this is a good way to expand further on. :apple:

At least we now know why iWork is free - even Apple wouldn't go down the Intuit route and charge extra for fewer features. I guess I'll be sticking with iWork '08 until Apple reverses this ridiculous move.

Thanks Apple for removing features from your products? It really isn't a good way to expand, all it does is p*ss off your user base - users who have already forked out way over the odds to purchase Apple products in the first place. Removing important features only to re-add them later on is just stupid, IMO.

Nice one Apple

Take a perfectly reasonable suite of software, take out all the functionality, give it the new "mickey mouse" interface and to avoid complaints supply it for free.

Did they learn nothing from Final Cut Pro debacle.

I am so disappointed that for the first time in 25 years of exclusively using Apple products (right from the first 128k mac) I have felt the need to actually submit negative feedback to apple and register with a forum to vent my frustration to other like minded users.

Oh well, time to do my work on my granddaughters “my first laptop” :)

Alternatively, best stick to iWork 09 for my work and the new versions for my 1 year old granddaughter.

Numbers is great until you realise the formula you're typing isn't recognised and then you're heading to Excel. Happened to me enough times that I usually start all but the simplest projects in Excel.

And when did it become good design for every open window to have it's own set of dynamic buttons and controls? I like the '09 inspector(s) - so much quicker to use for an experienced user. I moved as much as could to iWork when Office ditched the formatting palette and I had to play hunt the function in the ever-changing ribbon.

it's amazing how crappy this software is. I installed it and deleted it after 10 minutes.

Office 2011 is bad, but iwork is not good, even for 5 year old users. Waht a crap.

So you made your mind up after 10 minutes?! You sure you didn't hate just one thing about them and it annoyed you enough to remove them all??

not really, I made up my mind in 60 seconds. Enough time to see that is even much worse than office, for proper work. If I had 5 year old kids, I think the new iwork would be perfect for them. ;-D

It didn't take me much longer than that. Here's why.

I opened up a file I created with the old version on my 13" MacBook Pro, and the document took up a good portion of my screen, especially with the formatting sidebar. I turned the sidebar off and tried to shrink the window, but at 100%, it still leaves a huge gray margin around the window.

OK - maybe a small annoyance. I finished working on the document (just a few quick edits), saved a copy and then tried to share the file via email. Usually, I just drag the document icon from the menu bar onto the Mail icon. This worked, and I hit send - but GMail blocked the attachment for security reasons.

I thought maybe it was a glitch, so I used the share button to attach the file... and found it's so much more cumbersome (a couple of clicks versus a simple pull down) to attach a file to an email.

I haven't even touched other missing or broken functionality (lists, two-up view, etc.). However, these basic changes would severely impact the way I work with the software every day.

The best thing Apple did with Pages? It didn't delete my old version, so I can keep using it.

How do you uninstall it and go back to iWork 09? I don't like it either...I take online classes and my submissions are to be in Windows format (.doc: and it's harder to save them properly.

I used the new Pages last night to create a flyer.

It was awesome, loved it.

Good job, Apple.

Yeah, Good job. Can't even have two pages facing each other anymore. If Apple came out with iTurds to flush down the toilet, no doubt some people would say they were the best. Turds. Ever.

quick question, anyone no if i can install my iWork 09 disk on 2 macs?

of course you can. :D

I initially shared most of the opinions posted in this thread, but after persevering for a few day I actually have come to really like the new Pages and Keynote.
I imported the templates that I use a lot from iWork '09 that are missing in the new iteration and I'm a happy camper now.

I recommend Office 2011 for mac. It's quite improvable, but still much better than openoffice or libreoffice, and far better than any iwork version.

Well, I don't remember what the last version of ClarisWorks I used was...it was in the mid-90s. It couldn't compete with Microsoft Office, but it wasn't designed to. It was a good fit for individuals and small businesses. I thought it was a pretty good product. Certainly better than iWork '13.

Related, I'd love to see Apple introduce their own drawing app again, as Adobe is just getting worse and worse.

Claris Works was great, but (IIRC) that all changed when it came out as AppleWorks in about 1998. Then it all went downhill.

Some good, some bad, some specifics

I have tried out the new Pages and find some improvements and some serious flaws… but rather than rant, here are some specifics:

The context sensitive format sidebar is a great idea… it makes widescreen real estate functional and beats having to track down a floating inspector window.

A serious loss is the ability to do discontinuous selection! Even MS Word allows this and it is an important functionality Apple needs to restore.

Loss of the customizable toolbar is a bit annoying, but there are workarounds. I always had the subscript and superscript buttons handy… the new Pages doesn't have those as character formatting options. But I have discovered the keyboard shortcuts and saved them as new styles. Apple should add them to the format sidebar as standard formatting options.

"This presentation can't be opened because it's too old."
"To open it, save it with Keynote '09 first."

That's with a Keynote '08 document. The way Apple drops support for old file formats is so disgraceful and shocking I'm better off saving things as PowerPoint files for compatibility!

And... meanwhile... anyone think the Object Push and Object Zoom transitions somehow aren't as good as their old counterparts?
