It will be interesting to see if Apple or maybe even ALL software companies will go to licensing pricing, i.e. lower app price for only the license to use but never own it.

I know what you're talking about... but just to be clear, I think you mean something more like subscription not licensing. You don't own any software, it is all licensed. Companies are starting to head towards a subscription model in some cases, or more like digital books, where there just doesn't seem to be any kind of re-sale mechanism. Either way, though, it is only licensed.

WWDC is a developer-focused event. I can see them releasing the MobileMe revamp during this week but not iWork.

Steve'll give his presentation with iWork '11 and in the end he'll be like, "oh, there's one more thing! I made this whole thing (flips slide to reveal iWork '11) on iWork '11, it syncs with the new free mobile me, and here's all the new stuff in it..."

You heard it here first!

Merge iWork.com beta with MobileMe?

Unless someone already asked, isn't it also possible that iWork.com will finally exit beta as some sort of merged/integrated component of a MobileMe overhaul? I have not used the iWork.com beta, but it does not appear to be very tightly integrated to MobileMe, so it would seem to make sense to try to merge the two into a single platform.

Moreover, in the ongoing battle with Google, it seems to make sense as a way to compete a bit with Google Docs. If such capabilities became available for ALL MobileMe users, the need for greater storage capacity could be tied to the recent expansion of storage space at the new NC facility in addition to any other "features" that are planned for the MobileMe revamp.

And finally, is it not also possible that in light of these features, Apple may choose to change it's pricing structure, introducing some features as free for all, and some as paid-for "premium" features. For those who are renewing soon, I imagine Apple would NOT refund/pro-rate but would probably just simply extend your membership as a "premium" membership under whatever new plans they offer.

My mobileme is set to renew ($100) on the 22nd, thats 3 days! what should i do???

Grab your ankles and take it like a Apple Fanboi :D...

In all seriousness, just renew, and hope apple refunds people who either purchased or recently renewed in the pas xx months... thats what they usually do.

I don't know if Numbers should be another Excel clone. Even MS can not port Excel to Mac to have the same features like in Windows.

I really look forward iWork 2011, hope they release in June with the iPhone mini.

There probably won't be an iWork '11, just a Pages, Numbers and Keynote on the Mac App Store.

I like Numbers as Numbers, don't want an Excel clone, but keep the rough Import/Export capabilities.

Export to HTML functionality. Honestly if all we got was a way to export a spread sheet section as an HTML table I'd be very pleased. The goal of course isn't to export the knowledge built into the spread sheet but rather the data so that publication to the web becomes a snap. Yes this means static data in a HTML file but often that is the right approach.

This is the one I want - and yes, static.

iDisk

hopefully a new iDisk feature in MobileMe will be like Dropbox. Or Apple should just buy Dropbox and call it the new iDisk. :D

I dunno about the rest of you, but I think 'me.com' is one hell of a web domain for a kick ass social network that could rival the big guys. Think about it - Apple already has millions of users on their Macs/iOS devices. What if me.com became a free social network for all mac users, with paid accounts if you want an @me.com email address and the other features.

Building a social network into the OS is clearly the next big step for either Apple or Microsoft - let's face it, we shouldn't need to load a web browser only to run an application (facebook IS an application, not a web site). The intercations and connectivity between users should be OS level and Apple already has a lot of the groundwork done with Mobile Me. They just need to make it even more transparent.

A big-ass social network would make good use of their huge data center!

Do you think apple will update the iwork apps on the mac app store?
i bought pages on the mac app store and i don't really want to pay for another version - maybe they will be cool and just put out an update?!

everyone knows that iwork '11 will be mac app store only.

No, Apple never has done upgrading pricing.

Online versions of Pages/Numbers...

This is sheer speculation.. but with the growing popularity of Google Docs... and even MS getting into the cloud based productivity software... it wouldn't surprise me if Apple rolls out some sort of cloud based Pages/Numbers/Keynote package along with revamped MobileMe, iTunes, etc... Their new Data Center is massive, something huge is going in there... and I have to believe it is more than just webTunes...

If I had to guess, I would bet its going to be something like free basic mobileMe, for syncing contacts, bookmarks, etc (because that stuff takes up hardly any space)... and then they will throw in 25-50GB of storage for media or whatever... plus access to online versions of Pages/Numbers/Keynote... then for the price of what MobileMe is now, you get bumped to 100-200GB of storage... plus streaming of media content from the cloud...

Again... just a guess..

What shortages? I've always wondered how you can have a shortage of a software title? It's delivered via the Internet from a "master copy" somewhere so there can't be any shortage.
They're talking about the boxed edition, before iWork became available on the Mac App Store. You need the redeem code from the box to add the renewal option to your account.

They already did that, it's at iWork.com. They just need to revamp it and make it free with the iWork '11 purchase.

I actually got a new subscription at my local apple store for $60. Don't know if it was a promotion or not but check into it.

If my renewal date was coming up, I'd renew and maintain my service, under the assumption that Apple knows what an outcry there'd be if they dropped the paid service and kept people's money, paid in advance, for a service that's now provided free.

I don't think Apple will give up their MobileMe income and provide all of their cloud services for free. I'm guessing the money we've paid for current subscriptions will be rolled into their new paid cloud service, even if there's a lesser free version.
