I was amazed how simple the upgrade process was.
It wasn't a complete reinstall as of old, no having to remember to back up preferences, extensions and the like. Yes I found the installation of all the foreign language elements a bit strange even though I'd clicked on a a basic English upgrade at the start. Or At least I thought I did? My main concerns so far are that my intellimouse explorer no longer works properly,
it hangs momentarily before it does anything. I do wish Apple would finally give us a two button mouse? It's a real pain going back to their single button one. Also I can't get inkwell to work because the latest Wacom drivers won't load up.
There is definitely a speed increase but still not as responsive as would be ideal.

even if you select a language the packs still get loaded unless you deselect them...don't ask me why but that is the way it works. As for your mouse I haven't heard of any issues with them. I use a Logitech and haven't had any issues with that one but I know what you mean about going to a 1 button mouse...shudder

anyone having networking problems? I'm trying to network my pc and my iBook 500mhz but it keeps on giving me a (error=-36)

I can easily find the computer but i can't get it to open. I've done it with other Apples but I wanted to see if I could actually network it with a PC since that IS one of the features....

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. Woohoo....Now I don't have to burn MP3 discs on my PC in order to listen to them on my Mac

APPLE, great job!!!!!!

My opinion on 10.2

Jaguar is sweet! I say it's worth the $129 even though I bought it for $69.
I'm basing all my opinion on my iBook 500Mhz w/ 384megs of ram. I didn't do a clean install but I just did a upgrade with 10.2

Jaguar is definately a speed boost from 10.1.5 Still not sure if it's the same speed as OS 9 but it's definately faster. Pop up windows sure seem fast, too. The dock is definately faster.

Drag and drop is great. This is definately a keeper for Apple. Never be without it again.

Networking with a pc seems to be flawless, the only problem that i had was that i had to tell the pc to allow networking but that's on the pc's side.

iChat is great, once you try it, you'll never look at instant messaging in the same way. Too bad they can't incorporate MSN Messenger clients with it. I have a couple friends on AOL but alot on MSN...

Address book is....alright. I wish I could import the files off of my pda's database, though. I don't really want to spend the time typing all those peoples names all over again in a new database.

Mail is not bad. I can check my mac.com email on it but is there a way I can check my hotmail on it also? Not sure on this......

Sherlock 3: the only search I've done on it was look for movie listings. I could've believe that it actually had listings for Hawaii's movie theatres. It was still missing some but just the fact that we're there in the book seems to make me happy.

The new simplefinder. That's been something I've been waiting for awhile. It's just like the old days.

Adobe Photoshop results, it still seems to be the same, take into consideration that I haven't updated it to 7.1 but speed seems to be the same.

Web browsing, i've used IE, Chimera, and Mozilla on it. Scrolling is still the same speed. Page load ups on Mozilla seems to have increase(i've tried them all on the apple.com homepage) Chimera and IE are about the same.

Toast seems to work, I don't know why some people can't get it to but it burnt me a cd in the same time it used to in OS 9.

Startup and shut down times on Jaguar seem to be longer also. Not sure why.....Hopefully it get's addressed in the 10.2.1 update.

All in all, my final judgement on Jaguar is that it's worth the $129. Good Job Apple!

Boot up and shut down

I agree with the post above...it only took about 4 or 5 seconds on my 667 Powerbook to shut down, where not it takes about 10 to 12 seconds. Also the boot up time seems to take a bit longer. It moves quickly once you get to the "X" screen, but while the apple is on the screen, with the circling scroll wheel spinning, it seems like eternity before that screen clears and moves on. I hope they fix that in 10.2.1. Has anyone else seen these longer times?

Other than that, I really like the new OS. I can't wait for iCal, from the screen shots it looks great.

Does anyone know if you are able to load the address data from my handspring into the new address book? I do have the data on my computer in the palm software for X, but I can't seem to load that into my address book.

Any help on that would be great!

Thanks.

a warning

i nearly lost all my old mail.

this is addressed to anyone who is as untrusting of 'wizards' and hand holding functions like the 'Archive & install' option as I am.

i decided that a true, clean install would be best in order to get the full optimisation promised by 10.2.
so i copied all my files to an external drive and did the reformat and full install.

it worked like a dream but one problem arose. my mailboxes did not import correctly into the Mail app. eventually i worked out that you can just copy/move the *.mbox files over without using the 'Import Mailboxes' function.

so for anyone who has the same problem, don't panic.

1. Copy the contents of /yourBackupDrive/Users/yourName/Library/Mail/Mailboxes
to
/yourDrive/Users/yourName/Library/Mail/Mailboxes

2. Open Mail. All your folders should now appear.

3. If your Inbox appears empty but all your other folders are there close Mail and change the name of the INBOX.mbox file to something else (oldInbox.mbox maybe) before copying it over. Open mail and copy the contents of the modified folder into the IN folder and delete the empty folder.

Done

X.2 rocks. i did a fresh minimal install of 9.2 and i can't believe how quick classic starts up. i wish i had done that before now. i was avoiding classic like tha plague and now that i hardly ever need it it's suddenly really quick. doh.

can your handspring export to a plain text file?

from what i remember about my original migration to the address book in X it is very picky about importing files but if you have a very tidy CSV file it should import ok.

word of warning

for anybody that has purchased a new computer that has the 10.2 CD's included with the system you will NOT want to install it on any other system than what it came with. These CD's are CPU specific and while the MIGHT work on another system you can expect 'issues' with your computer.

How do you know?

CPU specific? There's nothing to identify them on the surface, so how would they know which one is which? In my experience, the CPU specific OS CDs have the model printed on them.

Anyway, my copy is loaded successfully on 3 different networked Macs. Works a treat! (Of course that's just while I'm waiting for my other licences...😉 😛

if you have the upgrade CD's there isn't an issue, if you have the retail/family there isn't an issue, if you have a machine that came preloaded with 10.2 and try to install off those disks you may have problems
