Junk mail, Amazon and Rebates

In the interest of a balanced perspective, I'd like to mention that I've never received a single junk email in the email account I have listed in my Amazon.com account, and I've never failed to receive a rebate, even though it does takes months.

i just puchased the "up-to-date" special for 10.2 for my new powermac due to arrive in a few days :D it was only $20 if you've bought a computer or mac os x from an authorized apple reseller from july 17th 2002 through october 2002. so don't worry if you are buying new computer! it's very cheap! i'm pleased, but i know how a lot of people feel and i would just like to rub it in to them about how CHEAP i got it for!

just ordered from amazon

After checking amazon, there is definitely a link on the jaguar page for a $50 rebate. One thing of note though: After printing the rebate, I noticed that the item mentioned for rebate is 10.1. My guess is that the coupon in wrong, but we'll see. Regardless, I cancelled my pre-order with Apple and when asked why I simply said "I just bought my first mac less than 2 months ago and Apple wants me to pay full price for the upgrade. Amazon doesn't so I'm buying it from them."

What I find most interesting about this offer is that Amazon can do it and still turn a profit. This means that Apple is giving their dealers a significant margin. I can't understand why Apple would do that: leaving the dealers to drastically cut prices, making them seem like the good guys and Apple being the jerk. Not only that, but buying the software from Amazon instead of Apple (as many will do at this price) only sends roughly $65 to Apple instead of $130. Weird.

Or maybe Amazon is selling it at a loss to get more customers.

The margin ain't THAT big. There's something else afoot here...

Well then, maybe this is getting closer to an upgrade price...granted, we do get some extra apps I will probabaly never use...but anyways, I just might buy it from Amazon.
I dont think Amazon would sell at a loss, but a very tiny profit. But since they know 99% of the MacosX using population in extremely pissed at apple for charging $130 for an upgrade they will probably sell tons.

By the way, does "amazon sponsor link" mean that Amazon paid MacRumors to display this news?

This is definitely a Loss-Leader, or some other special arrangement has been made with Apple.

There just isn't this much margin in a $129 software product. It's just not there.

It does sound like a good deal - I'll certainly think about getting it this way.

I think Apple missed a trick here, though. So many people are pissed that Apple a) is charging 'a lot' for point upgrade on the OS and b) is charging for .Mac sevices that were apparently going to remain free. Now many (including myself) feel disinclined to pay for either.

Wouln't it have made great marketing sense for Apple to have said: if you by Jaguar, you get a year's subscription to .Mac. Or, if you subscribe to .Mac, you also get 'free' OS updates. If they had done this, I bet Apple wouldn't have any trouble selling .Mac accounts!

I have emailed Amazon requesting a clarification on this issue.

You know, this could be another one of those deals where, after a billion people order, they come back and say "Oops, sorry. It was a publishing mistake and we aren't honoring this obvious error. Here's $5 for good will. If you do not cancel your order by calling us, it will be processed in full at the proper price of $124.99" or something like that.

These 'accidents' are becomming awfully common lately.

They Changed It

The original said
"BO00O6F7S2 Mac OS X 10.2: Jaguar"

It was very specific. You can still get to it by clicking on the link I provided in the News Item -- the first post at the top of this thread.

Yes, but the original can't be reached other than by a direct link. While it's most likely that they've just linked the wrong coupon, for all we know this is an earlier draft of the same rebate campaign, the $50 rebate was intended to let them sell off surplus OS X 10.1 stock, and the appearance of OS X 10.2 in the "unlinked" version of the rebate form was a mistake that was corrected in the final version of the form.

If 10.2 is as good as its suppose to be, It would buhove apple to get it out there, which means giving amazing discounts everywhere.

sometimes that's all it is, kind of like when 8.5 came out. Apple new it was bloated and slow, and promptly release all the following version pretty quickly...

Allocations?

Just to throw some additional gasoline on this particular fire, has anybody given any thought to allocations vs pricing? Ever noticed how products appear as in stock at the place that's charging full price, while the place with the great price has the product back-ordered and expected to arrive in 2-3 weeks?

Someone mentioned that the Apple VAR price for Jaguar is $117 or thereabouts. We can be pretty sure Amazon's paying less. I'm sure we'll also end up seeing lower prices than $129 (although not as low as the Amazon one) from some other really big retailers who get better pricing.

Who is Apple going to make sure gets their full allocation of copies first? The people they make a lot of money from or the people they make less money from? I've pre-ordered software from Amazon months before the release date with overnight shipping, just to find its status as "Backordered" on the release date despite the fact that I can pick up the same title in my local CompUSA and I end up getting my "pre-order" a week after the title showed up in Wal-Mart. Meanwhile the Amazon order is uncancellable because of the fact that with Amazon "Shipping Soon" uses a definition of "Soon" appropriate to geological time scales.

So, once this coupon linking thing is sorted out, just remember that the cheapest place isn't necessarily going to be the first place to get it - I'm still torn between "I want Jaguar by the 25th and will pay full price and Fedex Overnight if necessary" and "I want to pay Apple as little as is legally possible, even if t means waiting for the monthly 'Super Saver Shipping' mule train to roll out of Amazon's warehouse".

Rebate coupon

The big question is why the 10.2 coupon link shows a different coupon than all the other software titles link to. At least two other titles in the "School of Rebates" section link to the coupon with "B00006F7S2 Mac OS X 10.2: Jaguar $50.00". So the coupon with 10.2 on it can be found somewhere other than the direct link that so many sites have posted.

it appears to be a problem with amazon's site.
the link to the Jaguar coupon is here
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006ANW9.01.RB02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

i also emailed Amazon after I ordered this. it does list on the site that Jaguar IS available for a $50 rebate, but the coupon linked doesnt reflect it. the linked coupon above DOES show Jaguar. damn what is with big businesses now a days. going bankrupt left and right. screwing people over. messing up crap.
jeesh. people have enough problems without big businesses screwing with hour heads.

It's Fixed

If you go to Amazon go to the OS X.2 page and click on the $50 coupon link, the coupon they link to does have OS X.2 Jaguar listed. This coupon has replaced the old incorrect "10.1 coupon" that was there
