The coupon is fine

I don't know if all your posts are old, but the coupon right there on Amazon's site says "OS X 10.2 Jaguar."

The link at the top of this thread to the coupon does as well.

So quit worrying about it and refresh your browsers. They've updated the links.

Macminute Confirms

Apparently Macminute has been in contact with Amazon and confirmed that the rebate *IS* valid and available for 10.2.

Quite right, I had the coupon image cached. Forced a reload, and there it was.

Now, to order from Amazom, or see if Apple decides to counter this move in some way...

Looks like Amazon is getting a lot more orders than Apple

The page shows the Amazon.com Sales Rank: 1

I think Apple hit a lottery with Jaguar (for that matter Mac OS X - apple is going to double its market share with Jaguar ) eventhough most sales goes to Amazon.. Jaguar is a must-have product, no wonder its Ranked Number 1

The $50 Rebate IS VALID

I received a response from Amazon today. According to the email below, it would appear the linked coupon is valid.

Please evaluate and purchase based on your own understanding and research of the issue...

Dear Larry,

Thank you for writing to Amazon.com.

Please know that this situation was the result of a combination of
technical and human errors, and that in no way did we intend for this
to happen.

You can now print the correct coupon directly from our web site--just access the following URL:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005ATST.01.RB02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Click each coupon to enlarge; print it using your browser's "Print" option. If several coupon pages are displayed, please make sure you print and fill out all of them.

If you experience any difficulty, please respond to this message and we'll be happy to fax or mail you a copy of the coupon.

Please note that most manufacturers require that you send in the
original UPC barcode, so please keep the item's packaging until the
coupon arrives. Also, if you need a receipt to enclose with the rebate form, you can print an invoice for your order by clicking the "Your Account" link at the top of our web site and then selecting the link to "Print invoices."

Jaguar received

For those who predicted that amazon.com would take quite a long while to fill their Jaguar orders ............ my order was shipped on August 24th (I used the "zero" shipping fee option) and received on the 26th. I'm quite happy about that. )I'll be even happier when I receive my $50.00 rebate.)

Jaguar Installer Issue

I just installed 10.2 on my iBook using the Archive and Install option, and when it was done I had over 100,000 files (including my old stuff, of course). That was a growth of around 30,000 files for the new System. I found the Previous System folder and decided to move (copy to other partition and delete) it to reduce the burden on my disk utilities when I'm Disk Doctor'ing or defragging the OS X partition. That was successful, although it took 45 minutes to delete all that stuff. My question is whether this was a BAD IDEA? It's my understanding that Archive and Install merely renames your old System Folder to Previous System 1 in the new Previous System Folder, and then creates the new System Folder. This leaves all your previous Prefs and Apps alone, so when you're done you're ready to go, while keeping your old System Folder handy if you need to use it after the install. So, it would seem that subsequently deleting this old 1.2GB of stuff should have no bad affects on you system after you're sure everyting is working OK. Is this correct? Everything seems to be working fine, following a series of of Disk Doctor and Speed Disk runs to clean the partition up, but I keep wondering whether I've screwed something up. Any Unix gurus out there who can reassure me, or send me back to the drawing board?

Probably not as long as it still exists. The caveat lies in what invisible files might have been missed somehow. Sometimes its helpful to take a look at your OS X disk from another OS 9 booted volume, then you can see quite a bit of file structure that is being hidden from you 'for your protection' by OS X.

This is pretty much the situation with OS 9 and before. Thoretically, a regular install of OS X. 2 over OS X should leave all individual user prefs and apps alone anyway, I don't know of the global preferences that may have been set up in Admin or superuser that could be overwritten by such an install. Newer versions of some Apple supplied apps -might- lose some particular idiosyncracies of your old set up you were dependent upon.

I suggest to any one paranoid about the install process that they backup the entire OS X volume to another drive with an app like Carbon Copy Cloner.
Bob LeVitus at http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/ has been addressing the concerns you are having as much or more than anyone; recently a OSXFAQ reader even offered an uninstall package that uses the install log for pkg files to make sure all the invisible file detritus can be uninstalled safely.

My problem now is dumping my archive of 10.1.3 so I have room to back up 10.1.5, without losing my present iTunes library which resides on that same disk. But after that I would basically have another bootable volume with a working copy of OS X including printer drivers et al to switch back to (there may be other problems arising with multiple copies of OS X variants residing on the same drive, so I hear)

The rebate was pulled shortly after it was offered. It is my impression that Amazon intends to honor the rebate for those that ordered within that 48 hour or less period before it was pulled.

Jaguar Installer Issue

Thanks for the feedback. I booted into MacOS 9.2.2 when I deleted the old Previous System folder, so I'm pretty sure I grabbed all the invisible stuff. I also have a complete backup of 10.1.5 on a firewire HD, so that's OK. I was just wondering if it's possible anything in the new System might be pointing to anything in the Old System folder, and by deleting it I was fundamentally screwing up my 10.2 install. It doesn't sound like I did. Thanks. I'll leave all alone for awhile before I replace the 10.1.5 firewire backup with the new 10.2 installation.

New G4?

Okay, I got a G4 about a 1.5 week ago...Can I still qualify for the $200 dollar monitor? If I decided to get a monitor now?
