The jailbreak does void your warranty. I used to think that a simple restore would get rid of all the evidence but doesn't according to a genius I talked to. When sitting at the genius bar one day waiting on service for my first gen some kid came in and was giving some bs story about why he needed a replacement. So the genius said ok well let me hook it up and run some diagnostics on it and lets see what we get. The kid looked like he saw a ghost. I guess he thought the genius would just replace it given all the problems the 3g was having at the time. So the genius hooked it up and said "sir this phone has been jailbroken" and the kid said No it hasnt I swear. At that point to save an argument he simply turned the diagnostic computer around and sure enough it showed a trace of the winterboard application which can only be accessed through a jailbreak. I am assuming the kid did a restore because until the genius hooked the iphone up he had no clue. So the cydia and winterboard apps were not visible. Now he could have just hidden them with the POOF app that hides apps. He didnt seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. The genius immediately turned him down and the kid left looking like a whipped puppy dog. It was hilarious. So you are probably thinking "If you saw that happen why would you take a chance and jailbreak"? For me I was willing to risk it. I like having the apps that only cydia can offer. Its not just changing the carrier name its more than that for me. Your iphone is capable of so much more than Apple will allow. So much its sad actually. I have my phone insured through my homeowners and I could care less about apples crappy warranty. For 30 a year my iphone is covered for EVERYTHING (physical damage, theft, software issues). I wanted it jailbroke so much I actually tried countless number of times with pwnage tool and was not successful. So I did some more research and ended up using quickpwn and it worked like a charm. It has been 24hrs and I have had no issues. My battery is working like before and I cant put it down. I love being able to customize it to MY liking. It is not for everybody. I personally recommend it but do it at your own risk.

because of this topic, i've spent the past few hours just researching/reading about j/b....and honestly....it's not as easy and maintenance free as people in this thread lead others to believe.

"took less than 5 minutes"....ya, but that's your case...i've read a few hundred now that is quite the opposite....or the maintenance of j/b all over again after an apple update.

also, i think your comment to SWC about "I feel like if you bought an iPhone, you've already decided you want to spend a lot of time with you phone." is way, WAY off key and judgemental.

why would you assume someone who buys an iphone wants to spend a ton of time with it. it's just a phone, right? no different than a BB or Android phone. sure they all do things better/worse than each other, but by no means does owning one of these phones label a user as someone who wants to spend a lot of time on it.

I just meant its seems you'd want to spend more time with it compared to say a Razr which is what I previously had. If I wanted a phone and nothing else I certainly wouldn't be paying $80+ a month.

*That's a video wallpaper, you can watch it here ; http://www.thememyphone.com/displayimage-155-3.html

Wow, video wallpaper. No thanks. My battery life is bad enough as it is already. I used to do this stuff when I was part of the windows mobile crowd. I customized just about everything possible, writing scripts, changing lines of code etc. It was a lot of fun, but definitely had many bugs and problems. Usually someone somewhere would come up with a fix for it, but it took time. Until then, I would deal with the multitude of bugs etc. But the customization was great! A ton of fun.

I don't know though. I am just not convinced at this point that jailbreaking is the way to go with this thing.

...I personally recommend it but do it at your own risk.

thanks for sharing the story. so even a full restore or format would not get rid of traces of jailbreak? could the itune's restore function be different from a standard formatting function? maybe the pwnage people can come up with a format software for 100% data wipe... i don't know...

I tried 4x now and everything goes well. I get the screen on the PC that says its done and enjoy........ Than my iphone restarts and stays on the apple logo FOREVER. I did it right but can't figure out whats going on?

Apple Logo of death?

jail breaking takes 5 mintues...it's easy and painless...

I love the custom alert sounds...

When I unlock, it says 'Unlocked'
When I get a new mail, it says 'new mail'

And.... more good reason why I won't take the plunge!!

Noob Question about jailbreaking

If I jailbreak my phone, can still use 3g through ATT right? I am not planning on using my phone outside of ATT.

I think that's under 'unlocking', correct?

I really like the ability to make changes, I just don't want to loose my 3g speed.

Thanks!:D

^^ correct. You will have to check 'unlock' in QuickPwn(if you're using that) and then unlock it. but if you don't and want to keep AT&T, you won't loose 3G speeds.

What's even more amazing is, the first TRUE tethering app for jailbroken iPhones just got released today.

http://iphonefreakz.com/2008/09/25/...ether-your-laptoppc-to-your-iphone/#more-6764

Unlike NetShare, 3Proxy or iPhoneModem, PdaNet is NOT tied to any proxy ports, meaning it is almost as if your iPhone is a wireless router that you connect your laptop to. This means ANY websites load through as they should, and any program that requires an internet connection can run as it should. You are also able to lock your phone, thus shutting off the screen, and still have PdaNet running in the "background" (sort of) without it disabling the internet connection, unlike the other tethering apps.

And for those having problems jailbreaking; follow my guide if you're on Windows, i can almost guarantee that i've gone into full detail to make sure your jailbreak experience is pretty much problem free.

QuickPwn is easy to use.

People finding the process complicated are definitely looking at outdated information. And jailbreaking using QuickPwn is 100% reversible. Pwnage Jailbreaking method only modifies the firmware. That is replaced after every firmware update anyways. (If you update your firmware you would have to jailbreak again....that is if a version of QuickPwn supporting that version of the firmware is released.) Note that I said JAILBREAKING. What apps you install afterward and what those apps do might not be reversible.

And.... more good reason why I won't take the plunge!!

This is the first time this has happened to me, I have JB before.
What I just did now was to restore the phone to original state than I JB'd it and everything went perfectly. Now I'm restoring my apps and stuff.

It's really easy, 2 things to download:

- iPhone1,2_2-1.1_5F136_Restore (it's close to 244MB)
- QuickPwn
MAKE SURE THEIR IN THE SAME FOLDER.

Launch Quickpwn
Follow instruction

That's it!

I know this should be in the jailbreak section, but hey.... it's being discussed here already.

Why, when I go to choose firmware for my restore after downloading the firmware file, there's nothing to select in the file? Everything is greyed out and I can't choose the 2.0.2 that I need to pwn.

I'm on a mac.

I JB'd my first gen, it was great!!!!!.....until the novelty wore off about 4 hours later, then i restored it.:p

I highly doubt this is indeed the case. Reason being the warranty follows the phone, not the user. Therefore if you purchased an iPhone with history of being jailbroken (but was sold after restore), can Apple hold you responsible and void the warranty? That would open up a pretty big can of worm IMHO.

^^ yeah, but this time it was Windows first

anybody want to answer my question about getting .gif wallpapers?

Cydia (a jailbreak installer) has some, and you can always find them on teh web somewhere and open SSH into your phone. Search around bro!

Haha, that was me also. I gave it a good weekend to mess around with all the programs and then I found myself getting obsessed with customizing every little thing on my phone. So I decided to just restore it back to normal

At least I still have the memories (i.e. screenshots) ;)

I feel compelled to clear something up in this thread...

Though my 3G is stock right now, I am a long-time user and advocate of jailbreaking- since the days of 1.1.1 with my iPod Touch, with my 1st gen iPhone, and have JBed my 3G as well.

There is NO WAY for the Geniuses to tell if you've jailbroken your phone as long as you do a DFU restore before you bring it in to service. That will erase any and all traces of the jailbreak, returning your device back to stock. A normal restore/update may leave some traces- things like if you had changed your battery meter to a percentage. But a DFU restore will erase ALL traces of a jailbreak. There is no way for Apple to tell. The only way for them to have any access to the file system would be to SSH into it at the Genius Bar, and well, we all know that can't be done.

As far as hooking up your iPhone to their computers for diagnostics, I have done that many times with my old Touch, 1st gen and 3G, and the kind of tests they run absolutely do not give access to the file system. They will not see that you were previously jailbroken.

I don't doubt that the story posted by Opie above happened by any means, I just think that most likely the kid trying to get a replacement didn't restore his device. The diagnostics they run at the Genius Bar in no way could ever detect a jailbreak. Most likely the Genius looked at the phone and saw jailbreak apps and busted the kid.

The only way you can possibly ever have to actually deal with a permanently voided warranty (because even if you walked in with a jailbroken phone and they refused service, it's not like you are put on a blacklist or something) is if you use Pwnage, changed your boot logo, and some how your iPhone got stuck at the boot screen and you weren't able to get into DFU. And the only reason they could tell then would be because the Apple logo is replaced by the Pwnapple or whatever image you loaded.

DO NOT fear the jailbreak. You may not need it, which is totally fine, but don't let fear of a voided warranty keep you from jailbreaking.

I JB'd my 3g.

I got sick of the crappy performance and laggy UI cause by the Jailbreak.

Now am restored to official 2.1
