The jailbreak does void your warranty. I used to think that a simple restore would get rid of all the evidence but doesn't according to a genius I talked to. When sitting at the genius bar one day waiting on service for my first gen some kid came in and was giving some bs story about why he needed a replacement. So the genius said ok well let me hook it up and run some diagnostics on it and lets see what we get. The kid looked like he saw a ghost. I guess he thought the genius would just replace it given all the problems the 3g was having at the time. So the genius hooked it up and said "sir this phone has been jailbroken" and the kid said No it hasnt I swear. At that point to save an argument he simply turned the diagnostic computer around and sure enough it showed a trace of the winterboard application which can only be accessed through a jailbreak. I am assuming the kid did a restore because until the genius hooked the iphone up he had no clue. So the cydia and winterboard apps were not visible. Now he could have just hidden them with the POOF app that hides apps. He didnt seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. The genius immediately turned him down and the kid left looking like a whipped puppy dog. It was hilarious. So you are probably thinking "If you saw that happen why would you take a chance and jailbreak"? For me I was willing to risk it. I like having the apps that only cydia can offer. Its not just changing the carrier name its more than that for me. Your iphone is capable of so much more than Apple will allow. So much its sad actually. I have my phone insured through my homeowners and I could care less about apples crappy warranty. For 30 a year my iphone is covered for EVERYTHING (physical damage, theft, software issues). I wanted it jailbroke so much I actually tried countless number of times with pwnage tool and was not successful. So I did some more research and ended up using quickpwn and it worked like a charm. It has been 24hrs and I have had no issues. My battery is working like before and I cant put it down. I love being able to customize it to MY liking. It is not for everybody. I personally recommend it but do it at your own risk.
