Jailbreak Selection Made Simple

Uh oh...windows...sorry.

Actually, I'm about ready to start drinking the Apple koolaid. We just purchased our 1st iPhones about 2 months ago and quickly getting pulled in.

We are oh so close to buying an iMac. Kind of funny since I'm a Windows programmer.

A new version of redsn0w has been released (0.9.1). It removes the ipcc tethering hack code, which seems to have caused a problem for some people. You might want to give the new one a try. Same link.
 
Well, unfortunately Cydia will not open now. Selecting it takes you right back to Springboard.

Maybe I should have stuck with blackra1n.
 
I got a refurb through the exchange program last week and it was a new bootrom. Fortunately(???) the refurb died within 24 hours and I'm getting a new one sent out. Have a feeling they never fixed the refurbed issues to begin with.

So far, all the remanufactured phones we have seen/heard about still have the old bootrom.

The 3rd, 4th & 5th digits for you are the date of re-manufacture not when the phone was initially made.

And the letter "k" instead of a number does indicate the phone was re-manufactured.

i have iphone 2g fw 3.0 and i have windows, can you get an iclarified tutorial for that. i would love to upgrade to 3.1.2. thanks

Then do it. Have you looked at the first post at all?
If in doubt, spend 5 seconds searching google... i'm surprised you didn't think of that.

The procedure should be identical, as far as I am aware. Only the screenshots will be different.
 
Thanks latinist. This takes alot of the guess work out of it for me. Ive been reading and reading. My head started swimming with all the info out there. Sticky this thread.

This thread really needs to be stickied and locked. I was just about to post a couple questions about both my older 2G and a refurb 3G I want to get. Your post really needs to be highlighted for everyone to see. It would stop a lot of these repetitive posts (although there is an information overload out there about jb/unlocking).

I have a few questions I haven't been able to find answers to.

1. I have a week 42 3Gs requiring a tethered jailbreak. If I JB on my Mac, can I boot from a PC?

2. If I JB using redsn0w is I possible to boot using blackra1n?

Yes, you can boot from any computer using either redsn0w or blackra1n. In fact, that's probably the easier solution, since it does not require you to have a copy of the firmware on your phone. Blackra1n will detect that your phone is already jailbroken and will only boot your device.

Alright I've got a question regarding numbers 2 and 3 here. In number two you say that an iPhone 3G with 3.1.3 CAN be jb'd with redsnow if it's tricked. In number three, you say that both 3G and 3GS CANNOT be jb'd at all. Sorry if I read this wrong I'd just like some clarification. Just so you know I own a 3G 8GB running on 3.1.3 that I picked up back in May 09. I'd like to jb it again but accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3 before reading these warnings. Thanks for the help.

You are misreading. #3 says they cannot be unlocked, not that they cannot be jailbroken. Note: 3G can be tricked into a jailbreak, 3GS cannot.

They cannot be unlocked because 3.1.3 installs an upgraded baseband for which there is currently no unlock tool.

Jailbreak = file system restrictions. This is what allows you to run unsigned code on your phone (Cydia, Rock, etc).

Unlock = SIM unlock. This is what allows you to use any GSM SIM in your phone.
 
Wow can't believe i missed that. Thanks a lot guys. Also I've went through the steps described in your link to jb my phone but when it's about 80% done itunes tells me it cannot finish the update. It gives me error code 1015 which i found on the apple site:
Error 1015: This error is caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone or iPod touch software available from Apple.
How do I get passed this?

What firmware version are you on? Also, you can only downgrade a phone in DFU mode, if that's what you're trying to do.
