my modem firmware says 05.12.01 Guess that was my mistake. Not goin into DFU mode. I'm gonna search how to get into DFU mode then

I put my phone into DFU mode and tried again. Again I received the same message. So I restored my phone to a backup I had saved before attempting to jb. It is currently running on 3.1.3 andunder modem firmware it says 05. 12.01

Am I doing something wrong here?

You should be able to downgrade to 3.1.2. Try erasing all content and settings and trying again in DFU mode.

Thanks for the help guys. I solved all of these problems by just going ahead and picking up a 3GS yesterday. It was still running 3.1.2 so I just used redsn0w to jail break it. The tethered boot thing kinda stinks but it's still worth it. Thanks again for a great write up.

I'm hoping to get the opinion of the professionals here:
Is it likely we'll see a jailbreak AND/OR unlock for an already updated 3GS on stock 3.1.3 with 5.12.01 (yes, it was dumb, I apologize geohot) ? Neither Dev Team nor Geo have been clear about this from what I have read, and obviously Pwnage 3.1.5 can't jailbreak the 3GS.

I do not think the Dev-Team or even Geohot (who is generally much more spendthrift with such things) is going to waste an exploit on jailbreaking such a minor upgrade to the OS this far into the product cycle, especially since we don't know what exploits Apple may patch in 4.0. It is always possible, but I think it highly unlikely.

As for a baseband unlock, the Dev Team has already made its intention to wait for 4.0 known. And with all the flak he's taken over blacksn0w I doubt Geohot will be releasing anything iPhone-related for quite some time.

So this is possible? I have an appointment to replace my phone tonight due to wifi problems, and hoping that I get a 3.1.2 firmware. I just wasn't sure that if I did get one that I'd still be able to jailbreak it, I was thinking it would get hung up during the jb process because Apple's not signing the firmware anymore...

Others have posted Apple is updating replacement phones to 3.1.3 before they leave the Genius Bar

Addendum: I got the 3GS at an AT&T store because yesterday I hit the 18 month discounted upgrade option for it. When I bought it from them, they didn't even need to switch the SIM card or plug it into iTunes. I was in and out of that store in less than 10 minutes. I had my laptop in my car with redsn0w and the 3GS IPSW already on it and JB'd in the parking lot. There was no need to do the part where you click option + restore or anything since the phone was already on 3.1.2. So now my old 3G is essentially a JB'd iTouch running 3.1.2. (Also got this tank of a case by otter box. Cost $50 but damn is it resistant.)

3.1.2 and 05.11.07... no redsnow?

Hi there -
I've got a mac and a 3GS, week 29 (16gb) that is on 3.1.2 and bb 05..11.07.
Based on the chart on page 1, it seems that my options to JB and unlock are to go for redsnow, right?
Based in the iclarified tutorial, it seems that I don't need to restore since my iPhone has never been JBen before. Everything goes really smoothly during the JB procedure, and I made sure that the install Cydia box was checked. However, when it reboots, I do not have any cydia icon showing up, and I suspect that the iPhone is not even JBen at all... I tried twice, no success.
I then decided to do a restore with a IPSW (the one to which iclarified points) and I get an error message from apple, saying that the restore cannot be verified and is aborted.

Do you guys have any thoughts about what might be going on here?
should I consider an alternative method to JB?

thanks -

actually, tried redsnow on a pc and worked like a charm...

Using powerbook G4

Can I use redsnow with Tiger 10.4.11? I had previously jailbroken the phone using pwnage, (which will not work anymore). i have an original 2g iphone.

I did a restore a few months back when the phone was acting buggy, and I want to jb it again. What options do I have if I don't have an intel mac?

thanks.

To my knowledge, none of the current generation of jailbreaking tools works on PPC-based Macs. At least redsn0w and PwnageTool I know are Intel-only. There was talk of porting them, but I haven't seen any news on that front.

Thanks for the quick answer. If I used someone else's mac that was an intel machine would that work, or would I have problems with itunes thinking that I was using a new library for my data, photos etc?

Yes, you can certainly use another Mac or a PC to jailbreak your phone. Just don't sync it with iTunes, and you should be fine. And you could always just re-sync when you got back to your computer.

a little help needed

Ok, so I'm not really smart about all this.
Let me explain my situation:
Late model iphone 3gs; 3.1.2; 5.11.07 firmware

It's been jb'd and unlocked using blackra1n and blacksn0w. (This was done when I purchased it by friends)

Only problem is that now every time I turn it off it goes back into recovery mode, resulting in needing to blackra1n it again.

Is there another tool I should be using to solve this problem? I've read through a million posts (it seems) and feel like I sink into deeper confusion with each one.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give me!

Called a tethered jailbreak
There is a thread here all about tethered jailbreaks.

Theres nothing to solve this at the moment.
Its called a tethered JB like mentioned above.

so being that apple has changed the iboot on the 3gs's and are now updating firmware at the stores before the customer leaves (which they never did before-they're only supposed to activate it) it seems like the Cat is beating the Mouse...
