How is this pathetic? Jailbreaking doesn't do anything to the device. It's a display model its not like i took some random guys touch and jailbroke. If bestbuy even noticed there being a cydia app now there all they would have to do is plug it in to a computer and hit restore. Give me a break.

There is probably paperwork involved as well, sounds like all you are doing is making an employee have to do a bunch of extra work. Don't you think the employees have enough to do without disconnect alarm sensors, unlocking the phones, plugging them into a computer, waiting out the restore from backup and filling out paperwork? Now multiply this a bunch of times as each inconsiderate "hacker" does the same. But if that's how you get your jollies then have at it.

might be funny but if some anal employee catches you he might call the cops and try to pin some vandalism charge on you.

I don't see how this is an act of vandalism. You are not defacing or damaging property (well, maybe damaging, but it would be extremely hard to prove said damage was actually done). In fact, you are using the iPhone and the app Safari as it was intended, as it was designed to work; access to the full internet. Is jailbreaking in this way modifying or changing Safari in any way? No, one is just using the abilities natively given to Mobile Safari.

How pathetic. What do you get out of doing it? You's should be banned from the store.

Leave the phones alot for goodness sake. Put your self in Apples shoes, would you like some immature person to use your phone and do this (If you don't want your phone to be jailbroken)

I agree. This isn't even funny. Wow, you jailbroke the phones, you're real cool. All you did was make more work for the people at the Apple store as they need to restore the device. You're also making it hard for real average customers to get the proper experience because you're screwing with the devices. Real mature.

If people here think this is funny and a good prank, please go find a new hobby.

People (like you) will always find a way to justify something they know is wrong. That just shows a lack of maturity, thinking like a kid.

Its easy to prove a device has been jailbroken. You aren't changing Safari, but you are changing the device. Its akin to tagging the front of the business that you bought the water soluble spraypaint from.

No you're not using it as it was intended. You're using it to "break" the phone.

And you are damaging/altering the software - as a GUEST in the store - you're vandalizing property that YOU DO NOT OWN.

It's not a hard concept.

How would you like to have a party and find out someone started reprogramming all your remotes, etc just because they could?

Justify it all you want - bur you are wrong. Period.

I never said it wasn't the "wrong" thing to do. In fact, its kinda a dick move and distasteful. That said, I don't see how this could be considered illegal. You are using Safari's tools the way Apple designed and released them.

I totally agree. Reprograming remotes would be a dick move. But, it is not illegal. You always run the risk of someone screwing with your stuff when you invite them into your house.

Again, its the same as if you bought water-soluble paint from a store and then painted something on their store front. You are using the paints they sell in the way those paints were intended to be used, but the act of doing so is illegal.

Actually - it's worse. It's NOT buying their paint but taking one of their samples and painting with it in a way that the store does not intent you to use it.

IE - a lot of stationary stores that sell pens have a pad you can try out the pen/ink color on to see what it looks like. It's not illegal to write on the pad. And they are there to be tested.

But taking one of those pens and drawing on the display box, the wall, other packaging, etc isn't appropriate.

Perhaps a bad analogy - but it's like adding cayenne pepper to one of the dishes in a buffet to get your jollies.

If I see anyone jailbreaking iphones at my local apple store I'll personally drag you out by the scuff of your neck. Better call Mommy! ;)

I don't think it's a matter for police, though my question of "whats the point"? keeps passing through my synapses.

I never understood the satisfaction one would get out of purposely annoying people they will never meet. It's a rather odd way to obtain gratification.

Its a classic case of miserable people trying to make others feel as crappy as they do.

I fail to see the difference :)

I bet a lot of the clowns that do this are doing it by themselves.

I bet a lot of the clowns that do this would come on MR and post about it. I fail to see the difference ;)

Like the people who lie/cheat at the Apple store to get exchanges. Or walk out with a gift card that they know they shouldn't have. That sort of bragging :)

Don't display models automatically restore and reset their settings every night? Otherwise all the crazy videos people take and phone calls people make would have to be manually removed every day...

Why? I've used store models that have tons of crap on them (not just iPhones/computers - but digital camera, etc)

Looks like someone already did it.
They seem to be making the post of it in the Belfast Apple Store ;P

Jailbreaking is no worse than what some other pranksters do to demo iPhones and iPad units.

There was a complaint on the local news when a teenage boy went shopping with his dad at Best Buy just to find gay pornography on one of the iPad browser pages.

no worse or no better? Because all of the above is inappropriate.

The complaint is that jailbreaking is an "unauthorized" function that ruins demo units. But web browsing is a perfectly normal function that lends itself to much worse than what a simple "Cydia" icon can do to other customers testing the unit out.

It's much easier to program a store demo OS for the iPhone that flushes out all content and resets itself in the middle of the night.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if some system wasn't already in place.
