Another £8 for 6 more minutes of a film renowned for having a bad story.
Are they joking?

So the extended cut blue ray box set came out. The third disc has a scene deconstruction where they have a picture-in-picture of the actual performances alongside the finished animation. Its seriously mind blowing. The reactions and expressions the actor deliver-- in a gray warehouse-- are incredible. It was pretty amazing to see Zoe Saldana become her character with only a black suit on.

Here's a sample of the motion capture via this HD YouTube video (and another longer non-HD YouTube video).

And speaking of the BluRay release, I'll bet a million 3D TV retailers couldn't stop crying when they heard that Avatar wouldn't be available in a 3D home version this holiday season - - Cameron's really milking this product with multiple releases months apart.

I think we have to split the definitions here.

There are things that are great.
And there are things that a popular.

Avatar was a popular movie. It wasn't a great movie however.

Ah but both great and popular are defined by public opinion. And the public spent a record amount of money on this film. Greatness depends on who is defining great and I accept your verdict, however the story is original and good, but several of the primary themes are not original. This is not an issue for me. Pick a theme, any theme, and chances are it has been repeated multiple times in film. It is not as important as other aspects of the story and experience. Some people like to hold this movie up as a remake of Dances with Wolves. If you want to pick two themes, one technically superior culture abusing another and a hero who befriends the "enemy", ok. But there are so many aspects of the film that are unique it is a ridiculous comparison. Regarding technical advances and cinematography it is great on all counts. As far as I know this movie is a first where actors faces have been motion captured, a unique virtual camera system, and the first movie where a complete photo realistic world has been created, not to mention seamless integration of live action into animation on such a scale. The movie deserves it's accolades and a record box office return. :)

Regarding the new release with 6-9 min of new footage. I'm interested, but I probably won't purchase it until I finally make the leap to Blu-Ray.

I spoke too soon...

The Avatar 3D Blu-Ray is available starting today!

...exclusively to those who buy a new Panasonic Viera 3DTV (or who bought one between March 10, 2010 and November 30, 2010 and take advantage of a mail-in offer).

So I underestimated the strategy of 3D TV retailers - - the Avatar 3D Blu-Ray wasn't the sale they were fishing for, but only the bait. They're hoping to reel in the big $$$ prize gamefish on the sales of the entire system! Crazy like a fox.

Cameron didn't make a movie, he invented a cash cow.

And, engadget.com had a story today saying how the 3D version that comes with panny tv's was going for about 400 for the disc on ebay.

Yes, yes he did. The movie isn't even that good. I guess the masses really can be manipulated easy enough, especially if you show them something shiny enough. I just Mother Nature takes her course like the guy that shot himself in his nether regions. Please O Mother Nature, prune the stupidity from the earth with in my lifetime!

I have yet to see that movie..

I bought a BD player, and snagged a used BD copy of Avatar from CL, so I will relax this weekend with a few members of my family who hadn't seen the film either to watch the film.

It's going to be interesting to me see what their reaction to the film is. I hope it lives up to the hype.

I think the movie great. Sure the plot lines are something we've seen before, the hero's journey. But there is something to be said about "playing a tune" and then playing that tune extremely well. Cameron built an entire world, practically invented the technology film it, and pushed the envelop so far that the entire industry was left on its heals and had to catch up.

But this whole thread was devoted to merits of Avatar or lack there of. We're not covering new ground here.
Haters will hate I guess.

+1. People constantly attack the film because the overall storyline is similar, but they are too stupid to realize that this is the case for almost every single movie, book, videogame out there. This is how it is. People love certain types of movies and its up to the creator of those movies to put in their own unique spin and James Cameron absolutely did it. Find any other movie like it, you cant.

Anyone who sits there and says "Avatar sucks" instantly has an invalid opinion to me. If someone doesn't like the movie, thats one thing, but to say it "sucks" and completely throw away how revolutionary the special effects where and the technology behind it that was created from scratch shows complete ignorance on their part. I personally LOVED Avatar (and I used to never want to see it, I got dragged to the theater to see it). I left that theater completely in awe. (I never got to see it in 3D :( )

Before I get jumped on for saying people who say "Avatar sucks" have an invalid opinion, let me explain:

I hate the star wars movies (I'm talking the original three), BUT I think at the same time they are amazing and revolutionary. Why? They have a great storyline, VERY unique. They have great special effects which to this day still look great (and IMO look better then the newer ones), they had an excellent cast, and it was all around an excellent set of movies. I still don't like them simply because its not my style of movie, but I still have the utmost respect for everything that went into them.

This is how Avatar is. Someone may not like the story but they can't deny how revolutionary the movie itself is.

I happened to like Avatar, but I disagree with your premise that a movie has to be considered good if it utilizes revolutionary technology.

Extended Collector's Edition

***Spoilers Follow*Spoilers Follow*Spoilers Follow***
Tread Revival

I recently watched the BluRay extended collector's edition. It was very good. My comments intended for those who have seen the extended cut.

1. They could have left out Earth scenes. I really like in the original release that you don't know immediately that Jake Sully is in a wheel chair. More edge.

2. I enjoyed the story of Grace's school not that it's a happy story. ;)

3. The hunting scene that follows Jake acquiring his Banshee was outstanding.

4. Extended love scene? What did they add a couple of kisses? Maybe I missed it. In any case not impressed. ;)

5. The Peeps attack and burn the Bulldozers. I found this to be interesting because in the original release, the peeps did not kill anyone on screen until after they were attacked at Home Tree.

6.Tsu'tey survives his fall but with fatal wounds, assigns leadership of the clan to Jake, and asks to be killed (Jake obliges reluctantly).

7. Very brief scenes added, some only a couple of seconds long, like a horned rino type creature also featured in the hunting scene impaling a mech unit during the final battle.
