The goals don't have anything specific to do with the user. They don't "care" that I was overweight last January, but not overweight now. They don't care whether I am happy at 160# or want to get down to 150#.

But they do "care" how many calories I burned the last few months or how many miles I ran.

I wouldn't mind seeing customizable goals for weight, miles, calories, VO2max, etc. It would be a nice feature. As it is, the Watch may challenge me to run 300 miles in April at a time when I'm cutting back for my goal marathon.

As for running high mileage, no one starts out running 70 miles per week, not even Tony Stark. It usually takes a few years to get to that point. And even then, it's not 10 miles every day. During a marathon training cycle, I might run 6-8 miles four days in a week, 10-15 miles two days, and 17-20 miles one day. That adds up to 61-82 miles. And usually only one of those runs will be hard/fast (and maybe the long run). The others will be slow/easy. At almost 50, I can't handle the two workouts and a long run that a high school or college runner might do.
Yeah, this was really frustrating when I was getting ready for a half marathon. I needed a couple of fast days, and then some long, long slow days. The challenges didn't line up with what I wanted to get my body ready for. Since I'm older now, I need to add weight training to my regimen, but that almost doesn't matter for the rings, goals or challenges.

Gonna suck when I get older. Say, 78. Go jump in a lake Apple Watch! I'm not standing! I need to relax!

Come to think of it, I feel quite foolish walking in a severe thunderstorm this afternoon just to fill my exercise ring. I got this kick where I try to fill all three each day of this year except when I go visit my girlfriend in North Carolina.

Still, at least it stops nagging about standing after you reach the 12th hour. On Galaxy Watch, it keeps bugging you to stand up (with that sleeping sneaker icon) even after you go to bed for the night! I had to disable that feature.

That was my main motivation for buying the rowing machine last May. It's good for shoulder and core strength. I do get a decent calorie burn from it (though not any Apple Watch miles), and I've ended up enjoying it more than I expected. I've gotten a lot stronger at it, even with relatively low volume compared to running.

And 5 weeks ago, I joined a few running buddies who do 100+ pushups 3x per week, however many sets it takes. I improved a lot the first 3 weeks, but I've plateaued since then. I found an app that counts the pushups--you actually put the phone under your face and it senses when you get close to the phone--and keeps track of them. The app may help me stick with it. The pushups show up as an exercise, but I only get credit for 0 or 4 calories per set. (I'm not sure why it is sometimes 0 and sometimes 4.)

The pushups obviously work the opposite muscles from rowing, but I wish there were a cardio exercise that worked the same muscles. I've never been good at sticking with lifting weights (or doing pushups). I don't enjoy it the way I enjoy running, cycling, and rowing.

What’s the name of this app that counts as you do them??
PushFit or PushFit Pro. The Pro version was free when I first downloaded it, but when a friend downloaded it, he said it was $1.99. I think the Pro gets you the enhanced calendar view, but I don't remember exactly which features are "Pro."

I'm slightly behind pace, because I came down with a stomach bug the end of last week. I had a couple of light days and one off day (only worked a few hours from home too). But I should still make it. This is a heavy volume month, and I just re-jiggered my schedule to make last week my cutback week for the month.

Just move your arm around 30 times and that'll do it. Had to do that when I was in the hospital with no way to stand.

11,316 of 23,100 calories to achieve my January challenge. A little less than half way.

I have also passed the halfway point. I’m at 15,700 out of 27,800. My average needed per day has fallen from 897 to 672.
I'm at 10,000 of 18,900 so just over half.

Flicking my wrist takes about 40. I got tired of walking with a coffee cup in my hand and not getting credit.

I don't like to cheat. I just hope the watch will eventually realize when I'm 80 and give me a break. Or I'll just turn off the notifications, I guess.

Update: 17 days into January I am almost two thirds done with the challenge. In case I don‘t come down with a cold, like my wife, I might make it early. Fingers crossed.

Viel Erfolg! Thanks for sharing the screenshot. I've been studying German for 5 months, and I learned a couple of useful new words (die Herausforderung and mindestens). 👍

I just got my aluminum series 5 yesterday and got into my normal routine. I'm 52 years old, live at 8,000 feet and work as a professional photographer in the mountains.

Today I cross country skied up 4.5 miles and 3250 vertical feet, burned 2,900 calories, over 17,000 steps, 8,100 feet to 11,350 feet. Resting heart rate is 55-65, I plan to get in much better shape...hence the watch.

Questions: is the animation you get for all these awards always the same? Always a little golden star being drawn by sparks? or is it different? Like say the Ring in the New Year challenge being the three rings being formed?

And is the Ring in the New Year challenge always the same, for everyone? Close 3 rings 7 days in a row?

I didn't get a January challenge u_u... I'm guessing you have to use your watch at least 10 days before you get these kinds of challenges right??

I believe so. I haven't noticed different animations, at least not until the reveal at the end of the award badge.

Within a region, yes, the special challenges are the same for everyone. They are sometimes only available in specific countries or regions, like the U.S. Thanksgiving Day challenges.

The monthly challenges are based on some modest increase over what you've done in the prior month(s), so you do need a history before they show up. It may even take a full calendar month. I'm not sure what the minimum is.

I finally had a badge show up this week that I had decided didn't exist: new rowing workout record

You know that each time you do a new kind of workout for the first time you get a silver "first <exercise>" badge. I have cycling, elliptical, rowing, running, and walking. And after a certain break-in period, you can also earn a gold "new <exercise> record" badge if you exceed your prior best calories burned for that exercise. Until this week, I had four of these badges, with rowing missing.

Well, it finally showed up after a row (of an odd distance, 11,049 m) this week. I think the problem was that I usually delete the Watch-recorded workout and keep the ErgData app recorded workout. (It has more data.) This time I forgot to delete the Watch-recorded workout, and I noticed the record the next morning. I had tried not deleting the Watch-recorded workout to see if the record badge showed up, but I guess I hadn't waited long enough.
