Good thing I prefer "Gameday" on http://www.MLB.com (for 'baseball' Gamecast). It still works. Gameday does basically the same thing as Gamecast but also includes pitch location after each pitch and shows the hit/out location in the field diagram. Try it.

yeah, actually I am using gameday now, but it's still annoying. Even the "game update" (refreshes every 60 seconds) on espn isn't working. This is pretty annoying. Is there anyway to revert to before this update?

Java is not Javascript

Java and javascript are not the same thing. The original poster was refering to Microsoft's embrace and extension of Java script.

I just checked ESPN gamecast and it worked for me. Monday Night Football says Bucs leading 3 to zip. Wife watching HGTV. This is with Safari and new java update. Safari does seem a little faster and no crashes so far.

espn gamecast and yahoo statracker

prior to this update, gamecast worked for me, but statracker did not. With the java update both work well.

well, installing that update made my drive unbootable.

neat.

that was 3 hours of my life that I will never get back.

good thing I had the trusty ipod backup drive.

I only lost a bunch of shareware games... and some porn. heh.

anyway. I'm not too mad. but it did hose my computer good.

hence my negative rating on this one.

Right, JavaScript was CoolScript and Java was Oak in earlier lives.

It's good to see that they've tightened up things a bit but it's still 1.4.1_01 not 1.4.1_02 so they've only fixed Apple-created bugs.

More likely there was already something wrong with your drive and no matter what you installed next, your drive would have been hosed.

Check your hard disk occasionaly with Disk Utility. Remember to fix any problems.

JAVA != JavaScript

It's a commonn error to think it is.

By the way, 1.3.1 was really a bad release anyway. It was the first time they used the GCC3+ compiler for it and I can tell you that several libraries in JAVA were not 100% functionable anymore. I know that, because I am writing the documentation for a software company at the moment and part of their software was relying on JAVA...

But of course they don't mention the biggest buf-fix... that it finally works again how it is supposed to. ;)

Oh... and from a technical point of view Safari is a horror how it handles embedded objects (ask a programmer) and the DOM. That's why most online applications won't work as soon as they are a little bit more complicated. Most of them work in Mozilla 1.3, but not in Safari. Apple nailed together a browser that looks good on most websites, but don't look under the hood... it's scary. I really hope that they get their act together and will offer a really professional browser with V.2. Safari 1.0 is just a toy browser so far...

ESPN/MLB

I just tried the Gameday on ESPN and it works fine. I was hoping it would fix the problem with MLB Video I subscribed to watch the Mariners play and I can do it on my old PC (I am a new SWITCHER) but I can't get it to work on my new Emac unless I use IE....I was hoping to make a clean break form microsoft.

This sucks

SI.com's MLB, NFL, and NCAAF Scorecasts seem to work perfectly file with the Java update. Last time I looked - ESPNs stuff was all Flash based BTW - not Java based.

Probably because you have to log in with a student ID and password to try using the site at all. It is a homework site of a university.

I had the problem with the Java console as well.
It turns out it was a preference problem in my case. Just go to /Applications/Utilties/Java/Java 1.4.1 Plugin Settings and select "Show Console" click Apply and select "Do not start console" and click Apply again. that fixed it in my case YMMV

Oracle 11i Apps? Hmm, OracleWorld is just now (http://www.oracle.com/oracleworld/sanfrancisco/conference/). Maybe there's a Version of Oracle 10g for Mac OS X Server (there is a "Developers Preview" of the 9i Database already). So maybe Oracle and Apple are sort of teaming up here.

I mean the Xserve Cluster config would go perfectly with the "g" of "Oracle 10g", which is, "Grid"...

Maybe there are Xserve G5 Updates around the corner... ;)

Try Camino. You can dowload the last released build 0.7 or you can download the latest nightly build. I would just suggest getting the latest nightly build as I have not had a problem with them in the last 6 months.

Good to hear this finally works! I haven't been able to use gay.com's chat since switching over to Mac (Not that it's a HUGE deal to me), but it'll be nice to have this problem fixed.

I have been using a chat client called, well, "Chat Client" i believe that allows a connection to gay.com's chat rooms. It's actually kind of nice and a lot better than the java chat webclient.

http://www.gayboi.org/ and then click on Chat Client at the top.

heh, after it became unbootable, I checked my drive. drive was fine. Permissions were jacked.

Fixing permissions didn't make it bootable, but I suppose that might have been part of the problem.

I have been doing a lot of experimenting lately, so you might be correct about it being broken before the install.

I sometimes wish that OS X had an uninstall. My computer started running really really bad, and I spent a week removing anything I had installed recently. but there are application helpers and things like that in the library that you have to find for yourself. It's possible that I deleted something important along the way, and caused the prob with this update.

Anyway, it turns out that when I moved my computer/desk, I dislodged my memory, heh. that was my performance problem.

Anyway, peace

Looking more and more like the rumour squad read "software update" as "unexpected software announcement".

Can't really blame anyone here, but I reckon this fits the bill - it was certainly unexpected, and came out on Tuesday...

1.3.1 still installed??

I checked my installed plugins for Safari and it shows that it still uses 1.3.1 for Java Plug-in (CFM) and the Java Plug-in. Java Plug-in for Cocoa is 1.4.1. See attached screenshot.

Also, in my /Applications/Utilities/Java folder, there are 2 Java Plugin Settings Apps, on for 1.3.1 and one for 1.4.1.

Does this mean the 1.4.1 install didn't overwrite 1.3.1? Is it safe to delete 1.3.1 files to have 1.4.1 work for all plugins in Safari? OR, is this why this is "Update 1" and an "Update 2" will finish off the update?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Fair enough - still reckon it fits the bill a bit TOO nicely, though. I hope I'm wrong!

The rumors I read didn't say new software just that there would be 2-3 update this week. Monday and Tuesday and then maybe the first of next week I believe it said. The update yesterday came out just before noon so we still have a couple hours.

1.4.1 and 1.3.1 are both on the machine for various reasons. You should not delete either.

There will most likely be other updates since this update does not yet put Mac OS X in sync with the rest of the Java community.
