I'm in for two. One for each wrist. I want to see if they learn the same sleep patterns.

Just kidding, although it would be an interesting test.

I am in for one, if my Apple gift card is in my mailbox, I'm calling to see if they have them in stock. (Some people reported earlier some stores had them).

Gary

Picked up one from the Apple store near my work on lunch today. Alpharetta, GA location if anyone cares.

They only had it in black and did not have the XL size in stock.

Based on their sizing recommendations on their site I was just over the large size but not by much. So far the large size seems to fit well.

Setup was easy and it's to soon to really say much more about it.

If I recall, I'll try and do a update after the weekend with my thoughts on it.

If it seems like something worth wild I'll probably get one for my wife also.

Funny side note. The apple employee that rang up the purchase was surprised it was for sale already. Guess I was the 1st to buy one.

Tried two Apple stores today and both only had Mediums in Black. Unfortunately I need a Large and my wife needs a Small.

AT&T said they didn't have their stock yet and wouldn't sell it to me if they did, until Sunday.

Local Best Buy said they had a nice display, but no stock yet.

So I'll keep trying. Would love to get my hands on one before Sunday.

One hundred dollars!?!?
Well, I suppose if you're spending money on superflous gadgets, you're not spending it on food.

It seems to be simply an accelerometer attached to your wrist, with a vibrator. for alerts.

Anyone have different info on the sensors?

OH!
I wonder if the app can support more then 1 unit (his, hers, kids, the dog, etc).

Just bought one from the apple store in slc. I'll let you know what I think

Well any update on how it's going on this? I was thinking of buying one myself.

It did a great job of waking me up this morning at the "right" time. I havent synced it with my data from today yet, but last night it did a pretty accurate job of counting my steps and such. I'll be using it on a run later to see just how accurate it is.

What about security? Is the data encrypted?

In California, the police can probably seize it even in a traffic stop, and download the data. If it catches on, I can see how the data could be quite useful to prosecutors.

(In California, they can now "search" your phone or other electronic devices. I'm amazed that there has been practically NO public uproar about this. Will be interesting to see if there is a ballot initiative. If not, it just proves that California ballot initiatives are really just about lobbying money and the $1 or so that the "volunteers" collect per signature...)

If this takes off I imagine that a company like Nike will create something a bit better. Jawbone doesnt have the marketing push to take it beyond a niche product...Looks cool though. I've always wanted something like this. I wonder how good the calorie monitoring side of it is? If it has a database the size of Lose It i'd be impressed.

Available at Garden State Plaza Apple Store

Just confirmed with their manager that they have a few on display and plenty in the back but only in Large.

If it only monitors movement, then it will be very inaccurate.
If it can sens pulse rate and movement, then its got something!

Yeah and I just looked it up to see what's in it and it looks like it is only movement. I think they have th eright form factor, it just looks like the tech isnt there yet to fit inside such a small and comfortable form factor. PLus without it actually touching against your skin they cant measure heat/exertion/pulse/etc. I may go to the bodymedia arm band.

"Extended" manual here, from Jawbone's site.

Just a vibrator and an accelerometer.

I grabbed one of these today despite the obvious extreme simplicity of it and questionable accuracy/usefulness (I'm a glutton for gadgets). However I will be returning/exchanging it because although my dainty wrist fit into the "medium" size, it's much too snug. Will try a large. (The Apple chick at the checkout took it upon herself to question the validity of my wrist size: "Your wrists are this small...?.... LOL" Medium is 15.5-18cm as stated in the above linked PDF, large is 18-20cm.)

Pic to show the "sizing flap" on the packaging. Actual size of the band is slightly smaller than this.

Just used for a workout

I bought this as I am training for a marathon and thought it would be awesome to have something that kept track of all my movement, sleep patterns, and what I eat. While it does accomplish some of this, its no where near the level to justify the $100 price tag. I checked the app midway through my run to see how far it says I've gone and it was about a mile off when i was only 5 miles into my run. The GPS map showed me zig zagging across blocks, which made it think I had gone further. The step tracking is way off as well. I walk to and from class every day as I live about a mile off campus. When I synced the wristband after I got home, it said I had gone a total of 4 miles, double what I actually had. Overall its a great idea and I can't wait to see what a more reputable company (such as nike) can do with a total tracking device like this, but unfortunately this will be returned to the apple store tomorrow.

...

Ah that's a bummer but that's for the feedback. Clearly if it's as inaccurate as you say it's no where near worth the price.

I believe mine shall be returned, rather than exchanged, as well.

See that's a bummer . I was very excited to go out and buy one. But if it does not work right then I have second doughts I would buy one. Plus it's $100:eek: for other $20 dollars I could get a Garmin Forerunner 305 Red Sports GPS with heart rate.

Anymore feed back on users that bought it would be great.

I looked at bodymedia arm band after reading Friscohoya's post. (http://www.bodymedia.com/site/landing/core_landing.html)

Any compare and contrast?

Is the technology of bodymedia more comprehensive and advanced compared to UP? Bodymedia also says it is about calorie in, calorie out and sleep.

How does it know the constituents of the food we eat ( protein, fat etc. )

One thing that concerned me is it seems the online support is subscription based after the initial free period. Is the device by itself worth it without the online subscription?

The price at $180 is quite steep. Are there cheaper alternatives?

Looks cool

This is a very interesting looking device. If it actually works well, it might be worth $100. Still it's a tad bit pricey, so I'm going to wait out for a bit and see how the early adopters feel about it. It's definitely on my radar though.

Like others have said, I can easily see a Nike + wristband coming out within the next year that does the same thing, if this is commercially successful.

I will receive my fitbit today from Amazon and I thought about picking this up to compare:p Anybody tried both?

I've now changed my mind again after looking indeoth at the two. At the end of the day if you are looking at losing weight its mostly about what you eat. Even a long workout may burn 800-1200 calories depending on your size, but if you consume 4000-5000 calories it meant nothing (easy to do after looking at calories on a Cheesecake Facotry menu, but I digress). So the most important part is the calorie tracking element which the UP lacks completely, but is available for free or cheaply from a number of apps. I prefer Lose It, but there are certainly others.

So after thinking about it, it seems that the UP, for what it lacks in accuracy, it makes up for in comfort. While it may not be as accurate as something that is twice the price, it is more convenient and still better than estimating the calories burned throughout the day based on databases and averages (e.g. I ran 3 miles at a moderate pace). Actually when you think about it it basically just counts steps, wakes you up and helps to better account for all of the activity that you do during the day that youwouldnt otherwise log such as walking around the office. I would pay $50 for the sleep monitoring alone and the alarm clock feature. So an extra $50 for cool graphs and extra data seems pretty reasonable. I just hope that they add the heat transfer collection, moisture sensor, etc in a subsequent version. I still dont believe that Nike doesnt have something like this!

No international delivery. Not available on Apple Store online in Australia.

No sale.

The funny thing is, Nike already has a wrist band similar to this one. My wife has one. They just never promoted it and it's dedicated to excersize. All they have to do is update the software, add an acceleromter and rebadge it to be worn all the time and they are done.

You must be referring to the Diaz case that the USSC declined to review. I'm not at all shocked that there is no public uproar over this. It allows the police to treat your cell phone the same as your wallet in that upon lawful arrest (not solely a reasonable suspicion based traffic stop detention), they are allowed to search all the contents on it.

Just like evidence and information can be obtained from slips of paper in one's wallet (driver's license, medical needs, emergency contact/next of kin information, drug dealer's phone number, pay/owe sheets, etc.), so can they be stored in one's phone. Additionally the GPS information can either lend weight to suspicion or alleviate suspicion depending upon the information contained and the circumstances of the situation.

If you are guilty, it'll likely allow the police easier access to information to add weight to the likelihood that you are guilty.

If you are innocent, it'll likely allow the police easier access to information to add weight to the likelihood that you are innocent.

Cuts both ways. In my opinion, from a benefit of / betterment of society at large perspective, I think it is a good thing. The police are handcuffed sufficiently to generally prevent the trampling of a citizen's individual rights.

I'm pretty certain your opinion differs, and that's fine. We need more than one opinion in order for the system of checks and balances to work. I'll be the Yin to your Yang :)

I bought it and yes it's not super accurate I suppose but I mainly need the sleep function, and the rest is for fun. I believe its a beginning, version 2 and 3 will incorporate hopefully more awesome stuff, like wireless syncing with wifi, setting the alarm clock for the app and also apples clock as a backup.
