Hassle? What hassle? It takes 2 seconds to process. The chip takes 10 seconds.

I’d say Apple Pay is instantaneous next to the terminal when it’s ready for almost every single transaction. Although, a chip on the debit/credit card shouldn’t take 10 seconds, at least near five seconds from what I’ve used, unless the terminal host is busy or slow.

I suspect Apple will see some push back from other credit card issuers because of Apple Card. I'm sure some of them aren't too happy about it.

I wouldn't assume this is because of that, but if JCPenney's card was usable with Apple Pay that could be the reason. I can see Apple Card becoming the default credit card used with Apple Pay for many people, significantly reducing the use of cards issued by others. Perhaps JCPenney thinks that, if people have to pull out a physical card (instead of just using Apple Pay), some will use their JCPenney card instead of their default Apple Pay card.

This is an excellent analysis.

"JCPenney made the decision to remove Apple Pay for our stores, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will definitely forward your feedback regarding this for review."

lol..classic apology.. Almost like "we didn't mean to" .. Yes, but you did.

A hassle to hold your phone or watch to a terminal? It's faster than chip or pin.

It is, but that also requires trusting your Iphone as well..

This is probably just one of many actions taken to prepare for bankruptcy. :)

It’s unfortunate really, JCPenney has been around forever, but I don’t necessarily think them removing Apple Pay is a distinction of their future or not, it’s simply just an inconvenience for the customer that chooses to use Apple Pay as their primary choice for payment. I couldn’t even tell you the last time that I paid with my debit card in public, almost everywhere accepts Apple Pay/android pay from merchants.

Using my iPhone or Apple Watch for payments has been complete bliss, I never thought we would live in a time where our gadgets are simultaneously being used for communication _and_ form of payments.

I had to use ApplePay with my Phone yesterday for the first time at a terminal. Absolutely confused the hell out of me how to do it for a second. Have literally used my Watch for Apple Pay for every payment possible since it was first available, but yesterday had removed my Watch to charge it. I love Apple Pay on the Watch so hard.

Anyways, on topic, as others have mentioned... how can they remove Apple Pay yet retain contactless support? Have they just removed the stickers from windows? I've always been able to use it anywhere in the UK that took contactless, regardless of official support with zero issues.

After reading this comment, I'm starting to question you.

I think our technology in a Europe must be different. Anywhere that takes cards at all these days take contactless, and Apple Pay is just another form of contactless so I can’t imagine it could be disabled.

I read somewhere contactless payment is not as popular in USA as it is in UK, Australia etc. Is that true?

Can’t say I use Apple Pay at stores as it is. Too much hassle.

Yes, so much hassle.

It's so much easier to pull out my wallet, open it, pull out my primary credit card (2% cash back FTW), insert it into the terminal, wait for the transaction to complete, remove card from terminal, put it back in my wallet, then put wallet back in my pocket.

I simply hate all the hassle of just double-clicking the side of my apple watch and holding it over the terminal for a couple seconds.

</sarcasm>

Not to sound snobby, although this will, but how many Apple users really shop there anyway?

They are on the way out, so who cares?

Too much hassle? I could pay 3 times with AP before you get out your CC and swipe it
Literally it couldn’t be easier, but you searching through wallet or purse is?

I got tired of un-trained cashiers having to call their manager over to ask what to do when someone pays with their phone. THAT took way, way longer.

I quickly learned to only use Apple Pay on vending machines.

It’s been awhile. Yeah, probably it works better now. But, you know, when something is such a big inconvenience at first it really turns you off for quite some time. I just haven’t been willing to give it a second chance yet.

They charge the card issuer, who passes this charge onto the merchant.

How are they passing this down. I can’t find anything that shows Apple Pay has increased merchant costs beyond the cost for equipment to accept wireless payment. If anything I expect the cost Apple charges issuers is being passed onto all merchants even if they don’t take Apple Pay. So if a business accepts my tap to pay credit card they are likely already paying to accept Apple Pay.

What am I missing? Is JC Penny not rolling out tap to pay at their stores? That seems very short sighted. Even for them.

Try using a tap to pay CC. It blows their mind.

Huh? The cashier doesn't need to do anything special. It's a 'card' payment. If they ask how you're paying do you say 'apple pay' instead of visa/mastercard etc? If so that's bizarre. Telling a cashier 'apple pay' is the same as someone going 'chip and pin'. Who does that?

Well talk about backwards thinking and progress...

That's the exact opposite of what companies should be working towards, especially with Apple Card on it's merry way.

I’ve never timed it, but it is much slower than contactless payments. I was counting from the beep to the receipt.

Apple takes 0.15% of the total purchase when you use Apple Pay. I believe that’s on top of the credit card company’s fee.

Yes, though you're making the false assumption that Apple charges this fee to the merchant and/or that the processor passes it to the merchant. That does not appear to be the case.

Per this source, the merchant fees on ApplePay transactions are actually lower -- likely due to the higher security of ApplePay making fraud less likely. https://blog.bluepay.com/im-a-small-merchant-what-will-apple-pay-cost-for-me-to-get-up-and-running

This source says the fees stay the same: https://www.shopkeep.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-how-to-accept-apple-pay#step-1

Specifics of course will depend on the individual merchant agreement with their processing provider.
