Fact: People who use trains would seem to be stuck right up their own arse. Because it works for me it must work for everyone... I use the train all the time, there can't be anything wrong with it.

When you've lived in the propper country side and there is maybe one train and one bus in 2 hours and either of the stations could be more than 10 miles away, then I'll listen to your anti-car rantings.

Whos Bernard Matthews? Doesn't he make bread-crumb coated chicken products? I think it's hardly fair to have him in this argument.

The roads have had the cream of the funding? Maybe, but I think the point of that is in the wrong areas. Again, some one who doesn't use the roads tunnel vision. While the government is out spending millions on Speed Cameras the roads are developing huge holes and fallings apart.

But yes iBlue, some people hate some people a little to excessively. This is why people get shot.

I'm assuming BV meant Bernard Manning rather than Bernard Matthews (who is a nasty bastard in his own right ). I happen to agree and think the middle class Littlejohn metaphor very apt.

Mea culpa... turkey twizzlers, worthless artery-clogging crud packed and sold as wholesome nourishment palatable for the masses. It's an easy mistake to make. ;)

I note that by criticising the activities and utterances of a popular entertainer, I may have given people the impression that it was somehow useful to attack me, rather than addressing the views of their hero.

If you think this is just about speed cameras, then you've missed the point. and if you think I'm anti-car, then you don't know me nor have you grasped the point either.

I can truly understand why he is a love him or hate him figure; I just don't understand the work-up about it. That's typical for me though, I don't think there are many things that I feel such conviction and passion over... other than the ridiculously tiny size of most washing machines in the UK. ;) :D I just can't be bothered to really twist my knickers over it.

It's entertainment, clearly. Top Gear (as iGav will happily tell you) isn't all that much of a car show any more, but it is a fantastic car based entertainment show that is hugely popular. Each presenter has their character to play up to for it to work, and it does, very well. No one needs take anything they say very seriously, but most can enjoy it for what they and it are.

It's all sport. The kind of baiting that Clarkson claims he likes to do. ;)

other than the ridiculously tiny size of most washing machines in the UK.

Steve Jobs on washing machines (and passion ;) ):

"It takes a passionate commitment to really thoroughly understand something.... Most people don't take the time to do that." He then proceeded to tell a story that both sheds light on his private life and gives some insight into the decision-making process that often turns life into a hell for people who work with him.

Making the point that design isn't just an issue for "fancy new gadgets," he described how his whole family became involved in, of all things, the selection of a new washing machine and dryer. This is a little hard to picture: The billionaire Jobs family didn't have very good machines. Selecting new ones became a project for the whole family. The big decision came down to whether to purchase a European machine or an American-made one. The European machine, according to Steve, does a much better job, uses about one-quarter as much water, and treats the clothes more gently so that they last longer. But the American machines take about half as long to wash the clothes.

"We spent some time in our family talking about what's the trade-off we want to make. We spent about two weeks talking about this. Every night at the dinner table" -- imagine dinner-table conversation about washing machines every night! -- "we'd get around to that old washer-dryer discussion. And the talk was about design." In the end, they opted for European machines, which Steve described as "too expensive, but that's just because nobody buys them in this country."

Of course, this wasn't really about washing machines; it was about passing along the concern for design to his children and perhaps to (his wife) Laurene. The decision clearly gave him more pleasure than you would expect. He called the new machines "one of the few products we've bought over the last few years that we're all really happy about. These guys (had) really thought the process through. They did such a great job designing these washers and dryers."

:D ;)

between the <3 image my dear sweet e posted and the fact that teh BV found an article about steve jobs discussing euro vs us washing machines... I am :D hehehe

Maybe I take a Clarkson approach to the machines... bigger and faster is better to me. 7 loads in about 14 hours vs 2 or 3 loads in 5 or 6 hours just pleases me much much more.

I'm just proud I found a way to keep it on topic when discussing washing machines, Steve Jobs AND Jeremy Clarkson.

while i have to admit that clarckson is an idiot the show certainly wouldnt work without him as it wouldnt if both hammond and may left. I really dont think that it would be half as entertaining without their arguments and insults. They just work well together.

Having seen Richard Hammond present a few other non-car related shows, I don't think he's a bad presenter at all.

Just saying like.
I liked him in Brainiac. That show just isn't the same without him...

As to Jeremy Clarckson... I don't like him at all in Top Gear... But you couldn't really make Top Gear without him... and I do enjoy Top Gear... every show needs a villain... :D

Yes he's an idiot :D

He's also a legend. He's the only presenter I can think of (BBC, no less!) who isn't afraid to speak his mind, even if it goes against the official British Thought Police viewpoints of extreme political correctness and all that malarkey. Whilst I don't entirely agree with his "kill the planet who cares" attitude he generally talks a lot of sense IMO, and people like him because he says exactly what they're (secretly) thinking.

Best thing is, will he go on a massive media tirade against the government and the guy who did it etc etc? No... he'll laugh it off and get the piss taken out of him by Hammond and May and it'll all be forgotten. Brilliant :)

I can't stand any of them, tbh. As people. I'd shoot them all in a second. ;)

Having said that, though, I suppose they were my favourite band when I was young. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that :)

Oh, I never said anything about speaking, or for that matter singing. Especially singing, in fact.
