I love everyone on this thread explaining "how the music industry works" or "you don't know how it works". LOL. That's the problem. The "music industry" worked itself into Apple owning them. Iovine and his ilk bring you such innovations as "platform exclusives" and "segmented markets". Sure, he has street cred in the industry and is an amazing sound engineer. However, the music industry as an "industry" self destructed with all their greed and ridiculous business practices. Why let him do that to Apple's platform?

I'm not surprised. I knew when he came on board that it would be short lived.

Oooh sure.

4yrs, and you’re saying you’re not surprised? Lest that so many forget:

Since the Financial Times broke the news yesterday, numerous publications are now claiming Apple is in the final stages of acquiring Beats Electronics, a headphone company and streaming music service created by hip hop star Dr. Dre and music industry veteran Jimmy Iovine. The response to the news is mixed, with some experts offering compelling reasons for the deal and other pundits questioning Apple's rationale in pursuing what would be its biggest acquisition to date.

Iovine has strong ties to the music industry and a long history of working with Apple, having met with Steve Jobs to discuss a subscription music service in 2003 and more recently in talks with Apple's Tim Cook and Eddy Cue about the Beats Music service before it launched earlier this year. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Iovine credits Apple as his inspiration for the idea of the Beats brand.

Seems that Jobs, Cook, Cue, the old and more recent board members felt it was a good deal all around.

Remember ignorance is always hindsight and bliss after a long time and things change. Not all music channels suit everyone but to knock someone with the expertise, experience and savvy to build up a business and sell it at 3.1 billion to Apple is no joke to snuff at considering the long history of talks and approvals over such a long spanse. Show the guy a little more respect, if not then where is your $3billion business that Apple wants to purchase and hire you on as an employee? Hmm.

This is just spin that could’ve been written by an Apple employee. Beats Music had several million paying subscribers? Maybe Beats headphones were the most popular years ago but is that still the case? How would we know as no one releases sales figures for headphones. What I can say is a few years ago if you walked into a Best Buy the headphone section was like 90% Beats. I was at a Best Buy over the holidays and Beats occupied a small section while premium brands like AKG, Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Audio-Technica, B&O etc. were prominently featured. Even Sony had as big of a display as Beats. And as far as great music deals with labels/artists, that’s just speculation. Prior to Apple acquiring Beats I don’t remember anyone in the tech world or Wall Street saying Apple should buy this company. Many were suggesting Netflix, Tesla, Dropbox, Nest. I’m still not convinced Apple needed Jimmy Iovine to get a streaming service off the ground. And if they wanted to get in the headphone business in a real way they didn’t need Beats to do it. Look at how successful AirPods are. Zero Beats branding.

Seems like you’re wrong about Apple not needing Beats to get into the headphone business.

Apple could bring the Beats hardware brand under the guidance of Jony Ive and use it to create new music product lines and add new channels to sell Apple's products, suggests Re/code.

AirPods & Beats X most likely spawned from his acquisition. Not the design but audio tuning is quite very possible because by default iTunes, music app in iOS devices are tuned neutrally. Noise reduction maybe something Apple learned as well and implemented in Beats Wireless Studio 3. We’ll never know.

That's really bad! You only leave a company when you are unhappy. Maybe not a very nice culture there after all! So what have Apple got from their 3Billion if Jimmy leaves? Crappy Beats headphones that were OK in 2011 before they fell to pieces? Maybe they learnt how to produce the AirPods. Kind of shows how much the money industry changes and how what and who was influential 10 years ago most certainly is not today.
It will be very interesting to see what the music market is like in 5 years time - will music streaming services burnt each other out? Will we go back to downloading and keeping music? I do :)
I have yet to jump on the music streaming bandwagon. I still get all my music either on CDs, or iPod Classic if I'm on the road, or on my PC hardrive at home. I've considered getting it if I traveled more, but my concern is internet can be spotty on the roadways. Perhaps subscribe to satellite radio like Sirius-XM

Apple Music exec Jimmy Iovine, who works alongside Dr. Dre, Eddy Cue, Robert Kondrk, Trent Reznor and other prominent executives is planning to leave Apple in August, reports Billboard.

The rumor about Iovine's alleged departure from Apple first surfaced on music rumor site Hits Daily Double, but Billboard says its sources have confirmed the news. According to Billboard, Iovine's exit will be timed with the vesting of stock he acquired when first joining Apple.

Iovine joined the Apple Music team back in 2014, when Apple acquired Beats Electronics and the Beats Music streaming service, both of which were co-founded by Iovine and Dr. Dre. Iovine has had a long history with the company, though, first pitching a subscription music service to Steve Jobs in 2003.

Iovine does not have an official title at Apple, but he has been heavily involved in with Apple Music since its 2015 launch and has negotiated many of the streaming deals for the service.

Under Iovine's leadership, Apple music has seen strong growth since its debut, with the service now boasting more than 30 million subscribers.

Should Iovine leave Apple, it's not clear if he would be replaced, nor what his plans are after departing the company.

Bloomberg has confirmed that Jimmy Iovine is planning to leave Apple after he receives the final payout from the Beats Electronics acquisition.

Iovine is unlikely to stay on with the company even if he receives a new offer as his vision has "sometimes clashed" with the views of other executives at the company, including Eddy Cue.

I wonder if Jimmy was trying to move them in the right direction and Eddy’s non-music experience didn’t allow him to. It also seems to me maybe Jimmy wanted to have priority in getting Apple Music going and wasn’t prioritized. Whatever it is I hope they fix it soon cause going back to Spotify is more tempering each and every day.

Jimmy Iovine is even more powerful today then he was 10 years ago

Yeah Apple is going nowhere...except to be the first trillion dollar company

I would leave, you are working for Tim Cook. The man is taking Apple nowhere. Dongles, lame hardware, and android software is surpassing iOS.

OSX is the only good thing at Apple these days.

Clearly you know nothing about jimmy who is very much “cool and down with the kidz”. Just stop embarrassing yourself.

Laughing all the way to the bank, literally...”so long suckers!”.

Embarrassing that a 60-something legend in his own lunchtime former sound engineer was propagated as some sort of “cool, down with the kidz” figure by an excruciatingly uncool and clueless Cook, instead of being jettisoned on acquisition of Beats.

Laughable that he’s being credited with bringing in 30m “subscribers”.

Why did you make a whole story up?

Jimmy was pertinent to exclusivity deals like the Drake deal.

Dr. Dre and Iovine weren't really hired by Apple, nor they hold any real decision power inside the company. They are just there, like someone said before, to give Apple Music "credibility." Iovine didn't even have a formal position with them, and confirmation for this is his departure at the same time as he gets final payment for what he was owed as part of the Beats deal. He was there to make noise regarding the Music service. Dr. Dre is there for hip-hop cred and because Apple agreed to upload that movie (or video?) he made, and Trent Reznor... well, if he was really involved in the interface design for the service like some articles I read stated when the service was introduced... he is the real "persona non grata" for most of you guys. I like most of his music, though.

I'm not making a whole story up. That's what I meant regarding credibility and making noise. "Credibility" is not only for consumers, you know? And I pretty much doubt that after his departure exclusivity deals will cease. He was just filling in the "pretty girl in the deals room" role for a while as part of the Beats acquisition. What story was made up?

No one wants to have to subscribe to 6 different services to get a full music catalog because of "exclusives". This is more of the tired old music industry strategy that made them fail.

I’m not familiar with Spotify and pretty happy with Apple Music. Can you tell me what make Spotify better? To me, all streaming music are the same. A good song is a good song no matter the service that streams it, don’t you think?

Sure, in two words "Music exploration". Spotify music exploration is second to none, also allowing users to search for custom playlists. So if you play I don't know "Dungeons and Dragons", there will be a custom playlist made my some nerd out there. You want "Australia Day" music to play in the background, Bam! It exists. You want to listen to "Deans playlist" form supernatural, somebody has gone and made it. With Apple music, the exploration is horrible. The "professionally produced" playlists get updated every few months and there are few of them. Plus BeatsONE and most playlists are decidedly "ethnic" in its music variety. If I want a "running playlist" good luck finding anything that's not pop-rap. In short, if you don't like rap or its derivatives in pop music, you are out of luck. Spotifys music exploration is ground up, built by users of all kinds of music lovers, and music occasions. Becasue of the music exploration, smaller artists find it easier to get recognised on Spotify than Apple music.

Good to know. Thank you.
